I have been working at MEMIC for approximately four months now. Although it is a fairly large company that is growing rapidly, I have found my MEMIC coworkers to be extremely warm, welcoming, and personable across all my interactions. I'm constantly surprised by how frequently I am greeted by name from my peers and senior management alike.

I am encouraged daily by the attitude and spirit of my teammates and department managers. I am empowered to make vital decisions on long-term projects, and trusted to follow through without ever feeling the slightest sense of micromanagement from above - it is a great feeling that does wonders for an employee's confidence.

MEMIC is staffed with a lot of very sharp folks that are engaging and captivating to listen to. Mixers are held each month where employees are encouraged to socialize over breakfast or some other form of tasty treat. 

My daily tasks and interactions have allowed me to leverage my entire skill set and utilize my full potential. I have grown a lot as a person and a MEMIC employee in the short time I have been there. My experience so far has filled me with a sense of purpose that charges me up, and makes me very excited to go to work every morning. I can honestly say I have never been more excited or optimistic about my future.

I briefly worked at MEMIC last year as a claim associate. Going into this job, I was unaware that there was a 6 month “probationary period” where the manager could basically terminate an employee if they didn’t meet his/her employment standards. The training was thorough, yet the work itself was very overwhelming. While I loved the actual work I did, I found the environment to be incredibly isolating and toxic. My manager was extremely critical and basically threatened to fire me after my first two months. He also would make me feel inferior, scared, and uncomfortable. Everyday he got more and more verbally aggressive with me and it got to the point I would get panic attacks going to work. My colleagues were almost worse. There was one person who would be rude to me daily and not tell me why, and another would report my outfits to management even though they met the dress code criteria. I was abruptly and humiliatingly fires after 3 months and I don’t even know why. My manager who fired me was so cold and rude when he did this, and didn’t even offer me a proper handshake on the way out. MEMIC was the worst place I have ever worked and I have told everyone I know not to apply there. Do not  work here. You will be bullied, made to feel inferior, and fired for no reason. I will never forget how inhumanly I was treated

MEMIC is a great company, and the benefits are unmatched. I work in the claims department, and pay is actually a bit better compared to other insurance companies in the area, and with the added benefits it’s unmatched. All full-time positions start with four weeks of PTO per year, that you accrue every week. That alone is one of the key factors that keeps me with the company. Oh, and there’s also paid parental leave which I think is amazing and many places don’t offer. The people here are great. I do feel at times that some of the claims team managers need a refresher on laws/what it’s like to be a claim handler though since they haven’t done it in years for many of them. 

MEMIC also has many wonderful job opportunities besides working in claims. Being a claim handler is not for everyone, and if you’re unorganized you will not like that career path no matter company you are a part of. MEMIC offers internal applicants to apply to various positions in finance, HR, IT, etc. 

Overall I am very happy with this company, and am going to try and stay as long as I can. 

Maine Employers Mutual was once a great company led by strong knowledgeable leadership but once the company started recruiting for senior management level positions outside of the company when the founding leadership retired, the strong united culture and mission faded away. MEMIC became a claims operation like most others complete with poor treatment of staff,and  managing line staff with fear and intimidation.Instead of hiring and promoting the best candidates they opted for the "cheaper" options and as a result the horrid cycle of lost business and mass exodus of staff started followed by the usual looking for who to blame rather than looking for solutions. 
Overwhelmed staff with far too many demands are made to answer to anyone and everyone without support. Stay away from this company unless you like working every weekend and most nights to barely stay afloat and still catch it from the clueless management who place you in the the shark tank without safety gear in the first place.

I have been with MEMIC for about three years. I can say that I have learned quite a bit since I started. The company has been very supportive of my professional development with helping me pay for two certifications that have helped with my position. I have a supportive manager that I feel I can always go to with questions. You do not always find that in other companies. Overall, the company has a nice culture. There are some long-tenured employees mixed with many new employees as well. I find that most everyone at MEMIC is friendly and professional, especially when I have had questions. MEMIC is working on helping engage employees outside the typical work like breakfast mixers in the offices or ice cream socials during the summer to take a break and connect with others from different departments. Overall, I think the company is really making an effort to continue to make changes for the better with the growth we have had.

From day one, my department was quick to lend their advice and expertise to help me reach my goals and succeed on my projects.  MEMIC provides interns with an environment that can support and enrich our understanding while simultaneously introducing us to new ways of thinking and giving space to think creatively. I felt included and was treated as a true part of my team where my ideas and work were seen, heard, and valued. MEMIC's internship is unlike any other, and the company truly invests in their interns as they do their employees. On-site work allows for cross-department collaboration, and weekly coffee connections provide interns with the opportunity to interact with each other while also introducing them to upper management within the company. I am incredibly grateful for this experience, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an impactful internship.

Pay & benefits
My pay and benefits at MEMIC are okay. Salary is decent but no overtime. Promotions in claims are few and far between. On the flip side you can leave and usually get hired at a better salary at the competition due to experience you gain. Benefits are decent. Great PTO.

In terms of job security at MEMIC, I think pretty stable

Management
In general, managers at MEMIC are out of touch and tow the company line. Adjusters daily responsibilities keeping piling up and getting added to with little to no support.

Culture
Collaboration with my colleagues at MEMIC is decent on a team level.

Overall
My experience working at MEMIC I met some really fantastic people. Coworkers truly are what make this company, not the high caseloads and ever increasing job tasks.

Memic used to have a positive reputation for work culture that offset comparatively low pay for the industry. Unfortunately, that culture has changed as Memic has attempted to make the jump from a small company to being a large competitor. 

Management is promoted without appropriate management training, and upper management does not care about the numerous operational and morale issues despite multiple complaints, a staggering turnover rates, and attempts by employees to offer constructive criticism.  The managers who do care are constantly roadblocked by upper management and made to perpetuate a cycle of poor team development, and ignore morale issues. 

I would only recommend Memic as a last resort to get your foot in the door to insurance, before moving on to greener pastures.

I am a medical only claims adjuster in specialist training managing the medical claims for 80 dedicated accounts. Training is 2-3 hours per day. Right now, I have about +-200 open claims. That means I have about 4.5 hours every day to try and investigate new claims, manage existing claims, put out fires, make contacts, pay bills, receive and send mail, and close applicable claims as appropriate, while maintaining thorough documentation across multiple operating systems, as well as providing summaries to needy agents, policy holders, etc. Now, I understand it is the nature of the business that there are multiple interest groups on any given claim, but you tell me, does any of the above sound achievable given the volume of work described?

MEMIC is an exemplary organization top to bottom. I have been very happy in my position and feel very fortunate to be working for such a great company. This is the exact kind of company that I want to spend the rest of my career working for. Overall a great corporate culture. Where else does the President and CEO take the time to get to know you? Aside from the impressive corporate culture, MEMIC promotes career development through tuition reimbursement opportunities and also growth opportunities within the company. I cannot speak highly enough about MEMIC. If you are reading this review with the thoughts of applying, I highly encourage you to take the leap of faith. You will not regret it.
