Awful management in IS.  The IS director level leadership is so focused on the appearance of execution, they rarely think strategically about growth.  Arguments about who is right/wrong are frequent on team calls.  The amount of time spent in meetings that produce no productive outcomes is staggering given the number of meetings IS has day to day.  The ethics of certain contracted leadership is astoundingly bad.  Bad mouthing other people and management in the organization is a daily occurrence when attempting to CYA.

Now... the bright side.  The organization makes a difference.  Helping communities who have faced disparate outcomes in healthcare is rewarding.  Executives are thoughtful even though the directors hired are not.  Talented staff in IS who grind away and care about outcomes for the community.

This hospital is in the very violent community that experiences gunshot wounds mental health patients and high levels of trauma. The overall experience working there is people who are committed to patients under distress wounded or high off street narcotics they will train you to use soft restraints when necessary have police and extra security be prepared to walk through metal detectors or be cleared by some scrutiny of possibly wanting you down. Checking badges and clearance for admission. The doctors nurses and support are a team dedicated to work with the community and or along with social workers who have many resources and make sure each patient is cared for helped and discharged with all things they need

What is the best part of working at the company?
My co-workers in surgery make my day go by so fast. Really enjoy my time with them.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The delay times in the OR and having to work on-call a lot. I think extra night staffing would help with this issue. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Since getting new management in thr OR, teamwork has been the new culture  that has been a game changer.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I work midshift, so I usually start by breaking some of the techs that need a lunch or maybe just a break. Then go about the day with any other cases that are on the board or come up.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Skills are noticed and  rewarded.
Team work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes trying to find discharge instructions. Figuring out what area they are in.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
One of respect and intolerance of any type of bullying. Or inappropriate remarks .

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
First to huddle. Then receive the day’s assignment. Receive bedside report..advise pt I’ll be her nurse for the day.after rounding clean work area . Return to assess pt and document.there are adequate staff for breaks and lunch.

This is not an emloyee friendly enviornent  for the average worker, and certainly not , Nurse Case Manger, There was. a great deal of underlined hostlity, which made the learning enviornment difficult. The only way I learned to do somethng correctly was whe I had done some thing wrong. Ther was one case manager in particular, that reported any and everymistake. He didnt bother to correct the erros, just report them. I would advise noone that I know to apply or work for this facility

Good hospital with good resources. Plenty of room for improvement and need enthusiastic staff to uphold mission and values. Otherwise, people are there just to get paid and it is a sinking ship already. Work-life balance should be encouraged for RNs, in this shortage crisis we’re in, staff not allowed to pto for holidays can be discouraging. It’s stressful working on the floor, should be allowed to take holidays off and plan accordingly. Traveler nurses are being hired and new group of traveler nurses are coming, why not allow staff to take time off. Should take care of those staff who actually care and not just to collect paychecks.

The best part of working for MLKCH is the passion that goes into the delivery of care.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
As with any job you always come in contact with people who complain about any and everything.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Improving. Some employees are like the complaing patients...always wanting something, but not willing to give.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy but rewarding. I try to make it fun for the people on my shift.

MLKCH was a very good employer overall and working in south-central Los Angeles you are working in an underserved community, which is normally very rewarding, but serving  in this part of LA you are rarely appreciated by the community you serve. Most of the patients won’t appreciate you and they themselves  pay very little for their care, if they pay anything at all ( Medicare & Medicaid), but If you are OK with that, MLKCH is a solid employer and is a great place to work.

It is a brand new hospital. It has a lot of potential. However, the quality of the staffs are very poor. Management aware of the problems. However, they are not trying to fix it. Their only concern is "the budget". Unhealthy work culture is already developed by the first wave of staffs. There is no team work. The staffs are not interested in patient care. It is really difficult to develop a healthy work environment. People just come and go. They don't care!!

MLKCH is one of the better hospitals I've worked at. Very new facilities, lots of technology and equipment readily available which makes your job easier. High expectations at times from management. Workplace culture is mostly very positive, lots of team work. Fairly compensated and lots of opportunities for overtime. Patient population can be very challenging, lots of homeless/indigent patients and psych patients.
