ART DIRECTOR Nature, Macmillan June 2003 - January 2011 My initial task was to re-establish the art team into a working force again. The magazine was at a very embryonic stage and needed new direction. My job was to improve the design and take the graphics to a greater level.
Nature is a weekly international journal publishing the finest peer-reviewed research in all fields of science and technology on the basis of its originality and importance. It also provides authoritative news and interpretation of topical and coming trends affecting science and the wider public. For these reasons the design, the look and the graphics have to reflect this.
Initially with 2 designers we set out to make the graphics and photography more dynamic and to make the pages more readable. The next few years saw many changes until we grew to become a thriving team of 12 designers and photo researchers. The Nature art team had never been as strong and was a credit to all the team in making this happen. Being at the helm of the team when such important changes are taking place felt like a great achievement.
We continued to create powerful exciting issues with impactful graphics and typography when we relaunched again in September of 2010.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
Built the team from 3 to 12 strong Redesign 2005, also changing all graphic styles Redesign 2010

• Promoted to assist marketing services director of an international publishing company in 5 functional areas including supervising 9 staff, scheduling, and travel arrangements

• Controlled traffic for producing 7 types of collateral while proofreading 200-page catalogs

• Facilitated efficient financial operations by maintaining expense records, reviewing with VP of marketing services to determine budget reserves, creating monthly supervisor’s reports, and submitting invoices

• Scheduled ad runs in trade publications, placing insertion orders and providing design and production departments with accurate information

• Prepared exhibit booth for International Reading Association trade show and ensured smooth operations across the 5-day show

• Appointed to National Sales Meeting logistics committee, orchestrating award production, accommodations, agenda, and meeting binders for over 350 attendees

• Maintained promotional items inventory, stocking items, fulfilling orders, and following-up with distribution center to ensure delivery of promotional materials

MPS is a great place to start your first job. The pay is sufficient for someone without many expenses. If you expect to pay for living expenses, you'll be able to cover those costs, but not much else. Within the warehouse, the physical labor can be very demanding and seem endless. As you finish one project or assignment, regardless of efficiency, you're immediately demanded to continue on with another without any form of appreciation or gratitude for your efforts. Working hard and trying to achieve the highest standards at this establishment will only reward you with more demanding work, without pay increases. There is a constant stream of immaturity, drama, tension, and favoritism. If you're looking for a place to start your career and move up the ladder, MPS is not what you're looking for. 

I was an independent contractor for McMillan Publishing in their Reading Department. This department was working on a reading program for Pre-Primer, Primer, Grades 1-8. It was called Connections.

I worked in the word processing center responsible for three other word processors, managing work flow, hiring extra workers when needed and firing if necessary. I interacted on a daily basis with editors regarding typing and editing their manuscripts and making corrections as necessary.

I enjoyed working in this environment. The people were friendly and professional. This was a project job with an end date. When it ended I felt a sense of accomplishment and felt that I had been treated well and the books had gone into print.

As a result of the economy, this company, too, has been absorbed.

In a typical day at work, I must be punctual, sensitive,hardworking and loyal at work.
  Also, in this company,I learned on how to organise warehouse,dispatch goods,attend to customers etc.
  I also know how to manage warehouse,depot or stores,and proper stock-taken (stock audit).
  Me and my co-workers work unitedly and have fun with each others, sharing happy moment with each others after work.
  The hardest part of the job is when loading and offloading the trucks, whereby we make use of manpower energy to load and offload the trucks.
  The most enjoyable part of the job is when we usually have christmass break in December and other days that they paid our salaries,bonuses and allowances.

My role as Service Development Administrator: The role covered all the administration activities required to support the assigned Service Development Managers (two full time and three part time in my case), who work closely with NHS Trusts and hospices to set up teams of Macmillan specialists. (I gave administrative support to my managers who covered 6 Cancer Networks in total). The activities included active support in liaising with Health Organisations and preparation of all relevant legal, financial and operational documentation using the company’s proprietary PS @ Mac (Postholder Services at Macmillan) software developed in JDE (JD Edwards) on a Citrix platform and other software.

HR is generally full of lies and half answered questions. Management can be combative as they've done the same job for 10 years for low pay and few you should be treated as they were. The shifts were 10 hour days and coming in on Saturday for 4 hours was "mandatory" even though when I was hired I was told overtime was on a volunteer basis.
Jobs easy enough but it's full of toxic personalities and the ones worth anything or feel they've gotten too invested to push back or find other work are totally defeated and do the bare minimum which I cant blame them.

Performed many different office duties. Received all incoming calls
from customers ordering or paying products. Many different order
numbers input into QuickBooks. Administrative assistance to the
manager of the office. Organized all types of work orders. Payments
and Order information taken. Organized order invoices for the
drivers for the following day. Translation for the office in collections
and also for customer service, order taking and also all office duties
that had to do with any Spanish customers.

As a smaller large company there are many things that make Macmillan stand out. I work in shared services (the division that works across Macmillan Publishers and Learning and does things like accounting, finance, etc.) and have enjoyed working for Macmillan. The recent leadership changes I think are making things more structured in addition to more corporate but the company culture itself is very humble and "non-corporatey". For those who didn't always dream of working in publishing the salaries are a bit lower than you'd expect elsewhere as it's a lower-paying industry. 

The company really cares about their employees- it's unfortunate though, most times a lot of employees are placed with incompetent managers who do not see their value and unfortunately those individuals are pigeon holed or don't grow in their jobs.  If you have a great manager, who is supportive and engaged in your career then you will have an amazing time working here. If not, you may run into some issues but overall pretty decent place to work. Great benefits and flex time and paid company holidays.
