Magnolia Bakery

I came into Magnolia having worked at a place where the employees were valued and cared for, so to end up at Magnolia was quite a different experience. Often times I was called by my employee number rather than my name. Managers looked for and commented only on negativity. There was little to no positive reinforcement, team work, or structure. I was consistently made aware that I was merely a body on the floor that can be easily replaced. A pawn, if you will. Working long hours, while feeling used and unimportant, was the hardest part of the job. However, I was not alone. My co-workers and 
I built strong relationships with one another. because we were all we had. We looked out for one another. Working with and meeting new people (customers included) was the most enjoyable part of the job. Making someone smile, even just for a second, was and still is a priceless experience. I learned that people are more alike than they are different, and respecting them as you would yourself is always more rewarding than not.

I started at Magnolia as a counterstaff and quickly moved up the ranks to supervisor and soon after to store manager. I became training manager and head of training at our Rockefeller location and am currently an international training consultant for the franchising department.

I trained the majority of the new FOH employees and all of the trainers while managing a staff of up to 25 people per shift.

Duties included scheduling via Hotschedules, ordering products, doing payroll, counting tills and safe, doing audits including developing a training audit that is now used company wide.

The management team was typically excellent. Very understanding and effective. Most were wonderful mentors and had genuine desires for individual staff members to learn and grow.

This is a job that has given me a lot of experience and is very rewarding on a professional and personal level.

A typical day at work (for the porter position) starts off by checking the stock in the shop and making sure the arriving bakers have everything they need and that the porter clocking out has left the kitchen in a stable condition. The rest of the day consists of cleaning any dishes the baker needs or will need shortly, making sure the back of the house is well stocked with milk, sugar, chocolate, etc. The trash must also be taken care of every 1-2 hours. Each shift has a specific task associated with it and this task must be completed before clocking out. The staff is mostly young, so I found it very easy to communicate with co-workers. Management was very poor. Periodical raises would not arrive on time for workers, schedules would change without notice at times because of the lack in communication. I felt needed, but not appreciated or noticed for my work. I felt I could still be fired at anytime. The hardest part was having to prove to your managers that you were working. The most enjoyable part of the job was the staff. My co-workers kept a nice family environment in the store at all times.

I really really enjoyed this job. Unfortunately, managers forget that they are managers and not your friends. They’ll end up making decisions for you and your hours regardless of any WRITTEN agreements already made. I really didn’t want to leave this job. But the communication is terrible. One manager knows everything and the others don’t. Rules are made up on the spot too. 

I begged for extra work and hours so I could advance myself, no one wanted to take that seriously. It got to the point where my hours were getting effected and the managers literally not caring. I wasn’t making enough to get to work at this point.. and the agreed upon 8 hours of work was never given once I knew what I was doing and my speed improved. 

Don’t believe the “we’re working on it” cause they’ll tell you whatever to get you out of their face.

Say good morning to everyone and see who needs me the most and take care of them first. I've learned that people will do just enough to get by. Management was horrible at handling inventory, and employee complaints. The employees where ok, a lot of them where very unwilling to do what was expected of them, causing the work to fall on me. Going to work not knowing if their will be team players that day, or will I be a one man union, it makes it hard to go in with strong execution tactics when there are reoccurring problems on top of unhandled situation from management. The best part about working for Magnolia was I got a chance to enhance my baking skills and at the end  of it all, a lot of people really appreciated unconditional help. I was greatly appreciated by the staff.

So I actually worked at the warehouse, it was an awesome place to work at first. But beware you are not allowed up express yourself or if you feel you’ve been done wrong. HR sucks too, they buddy up with the managers and will not stick up for you.
Once you step out of line or say something that doesn’t go with their way of thinking they will cut you dry. I put in hard work and dedication to this company for them to up and let me go for something someone thought they heard and didn’t even give me the proper chance to hear my side of it. 
I WOULDNT RECOMMEND apppying at all. You won’t get raises either. Which is sad the owners live like millionaires while the employees struggle to live

I have always had a strong interest in the culinary world. I have a BA in Advertising and Public Relations. Communications has always been one of my main passions. Working in a globally famous department store, with high-end clientele helped me to have hands on Customer Service experience. Addressing clients concerns, and learning new strategies how to work with fellow employees helped me to learn a lot. The hardest part of the job was not feeling challenged enough, and not having an organized schedule. Organization is very important. The most enjoyable part of the job was everyone worked together to help complete a task. Group work was very important.

My experience at magnolia Bakery was very humbling. I learned to work with great people from all walks of life. Working there straight after culinary school allowed me to acquire the skills and knowledge I needed to build my confidence as a well rounded prep cook. From learning how to handle new machinery, to training  interns and new co-workers, I must say it's an experience one will treasure for a life time. My ambition to excel in the culinary arts field will always be credited to Magnolia Bakery. It has a business environment, "family like" staffing sets the tone for how one should always conduct them selves. It's truely an experience I recommend for anyone trying to pursue a career in the culinary industry.

I loved the environment and the atmosphere. It was a lot of different option in placement at the job. The product was assume. I also enjoy learning something new and different  everyday. The co workers was happy and open arms to new people. The placement being in the downtown famous part of new York was wonderful to meet the choices in diversity to the world. The meaning and how the company was started to all the meaning behind the picture to where they have grown to be amazing. I just love this job and what they have to offer the community.

People are professional until someone starts wondering how long they will have their job for. A typical day would start out with a few people coming in at a time, then a big line after 20 minutes. Credibility does not seem to factor in when there are so many new managers, who come in, and don't know anything about how you really work. I learned to still work to the best of my abilities, so I can get through the day. Hardest part of the job was getting to know the managers, because I didn't know if they were going to be working there for a while or not. The most enjoyable part of the job was helping customers.
