They call the place an "Assisted Living" Senior Community when in reality there is much care that happens, ironically more on the "independent" floor than any other floor. Not only do the aides do care but they are also waitresses for dining services to make the residents feel like they are at a five star restaurant., and they are not compensated for that.

This is a center specializing in Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease and such a job should be an incentive to offer higher pay-rates and benefits rather than the MINIMUM WAGE as the aides are the ones who directly care for the residents and tolerate their emotionally draining behaviors. Aides are under-appreciated and are constantly reminded to "keep up the amazing work!" 


They bring in just about anybody to fill in all the rooms. Many of the residents should not be here at all as they require more care than what we provide, yet some families are in denial to what their loved ones really need and concerns are not dealt with by management.

As a result there is neglect on the part of how taxing the workload is, so if you have a high moral compass and are passionate about the geriatric demographics, don't apply.

Being a CNA should only be a TEMPORARY case until a better job is found. There is no career opportunities unless they want to torture themselves with a dead-end job doing overnights and dealing with toxic co-workers.

Speaking of... be wary of who you work with, you never know if the other girl is a vindictive viper trying to get you fired... Oh, and gossip spreads like wildfire in a forest, even when you don't want to be involved. WATCH YOUR BACK.

As for the workplace culture: management obviously does things by the books and none of them (I believe) have every worked a floor in their lives since they like to dress nicely and wear stilettos.

They are becoming more oppressive each day with new rules and regulations having to be met on an unrealistic time-frame. The charting is done on electronic tablets now rather than the usual paperwork in binders which USED to be only five minutes to do.

Now it takes almost a FULL SHIFT to finish because of how agonizingly slow the system is and the pendants constantly being pushed and having to clear them which delays the mandatory charting and in turn having to sign a paper explaining why you could not finish it on time. IT is absolutely ridiculous and a huge time waster for many of the aides.


In the end: find a routine, stick with it. Keep your head down, clock in, clock out. Repeat. But don't become tethered to any of the residents. They lived their lives. You need to live yours.

As a server at one of the establishments I am met with everyday stress. Mainly due to lack of help or co workers. I’d say me and two other people truly work our tales off whether we are forced to cook, due to the cooks taking time off, or unannounced call offs. The problem I have is I absolutely love seeing the people everyday and helping them with their needs but, the sad part is they stress as much as we do seeing us struggle which is not right given their age. If we were only given more help I think I’d feel more comfortable with my job. I think another problem is how management doesn’t do anything to help us out either. It’s only the typical peek in to say hello instead of may I help you with that or is their anything else you need? And it sucks that he knows we need more help but doesn’t make an effort to contact anyone about the positions. Also the “dining room manager” helps out when it’s time to serve, but when it’s time to clean up or prep the next meal, he’s nowhere to be found. I hate that I have to come to work knowing I’m scheduled with people that aren’t gonna give a you know what about their job. I really think they need to consider evaluating who is really working their tale off by having the residents chime in during the residential meetings. I think what’s keeping me from leaving is the guilt that would haunt me since I’d be letting all the residents down who look to me everyday for their help and friendship. 

I should have known something was up in my interview that I was hired on the spot without the proper paperwork being filled out and no tour of the facility, or shadowing the current wellness nurse, but I decided to take the job after all.  The paid was not fair for my level of experience, but it was my part time job so I went with it, after negotiating.  At first they only offered $23 and I have over five years as a nurse!  The management is horrible.  While I was there 5 members of upper management left for other positions outside of the company, one actually resigning immediately and that was the DON.  There was no support from management.  The staff is limited and the schedule shows that only any given shift there was never enough aides on and I would spend the first 30 mins of my shift calling in aides or making sure there is a nurse to coming in for the next shift so I'm not stuck there for 16 hours.  There was a lot of hours to be picked up but even if you worked over 40 hours they didn't pay OT.  The quality of nursing given was fair by most of the staff and that is contributed to the management lack of support, scheduler not scheduling correctly, and as a nurse you were unable to give great care because you are too busy trying to deal with all the management issues.  I left because I like my license and if you aren't fixing the problem you are part of the problem so I had to get out of there!!!!

I have been working for Maplewood Senior Living for about 6 years now.  They provide plenty of opportunity for job advancement and stability.   The joy the job gives you when you see the smiles on your residents' faces is unmeasurable.  It is fun to get to know each of them and their life stories.  It can be a challenging job at times when your get to know the residents you care so much for, and they pass on.  It will pull at your heart strings, but you will be better for it because you know you got to know a very special person and be a part of their lives albeit a short time of their life.   My workday consists of meetings, paperwork, helping my team in the kitchen, Placing orders, spending time with the residents and just making sure things are flowing throughout the day. Overall, the Maplewood family is a great place to work.  Every workplace has its ups and downs and know where is perfect but i would say Maplewood is at the top of the ladder.  If you are a caring and passionate person and are willing to come in and do our job on a daily basis, Maplewood a place you would want to work at.  They take care of their employees and try to provide extra perks throughout each month to show they see you are doing a great job.  

There are many perks to this job, namely a lot of special events for holidays that come with free food and gifts. There are lots of fun and creative staff activities, for example, our Secret Santa between staff and residents, and the gingerbread house contest. Upper management is kind and helpful. There are many learning opportunities, especially towards habilitation and handling dementia. However, communication (both within as well as between departments) could be improved. Frequent call-offs lead to staff being stretched extremely thin.
However, the job brings a sense of purpose, knowing you are helping to do important work and making residents' lives better. Staff is generally happy to help one another when needed, and I have thankfully had supervisors who have shown compassion and understanding when my mental and physical health has affected my ability to perform my job effectively. I value the friendships I've formed here, with staff as well as residents. Overall my experience at Maplewood has been positive, with some expected roadbumps.

Maplewood truly provides the resources and support to employees to help them achieve their goals professionally and personally. I started as an intern in the business office and instantly knew I wanted to work in the community. I felt respected and like I was truly making a difference for the residents and even with my fellow coworkers. The management provided me so many avenues after my internship to allow me to explore positions and learn, as learning and growing my expertise has always been important to me. From working as Concierge and Move In Coordinator, to helping the Business Office and Marketing team, they allowed me to dive into anything I wanted to try. My last position as the Community Relations Director allowed me to connect with the residents more, along with their families. This was so special to me because I felt the true purpose of why I was doing what I was doing, no matter how stressful the day. I will forever cherish the experience I have had, everything I’ve learned, and the coworkers turned friends along the way. Healthcare is not an easy industry, and those at Maplewood truly come together as a family to help seniors live their golden years in a way many senior living communities don’t. 

I took this job as a PT job, Dining Room Server.  I ended up working more hours as there was a shortage of staff.

The DR/Kitchen staff were reasonably nice, and cared about the residents.  I actually felt that all the staff I encountered did care about the residents.

The facility itself is brand new (2014) and beautiful.  It was great working in such a nice environment.  Meal service is fine dining, table cloths, china, etc.  Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner meal service averaged 3.5 - 4 hour shift per meal service.

You work/are busy non-stop from the time you start your shift and when it ends.  There was no interacting with co-workers and while you do interact with the residents, it's limited, as meal service was a mad rush and you needed to always quickly move on to the next table.  I always felt they were understaffed, but that was their staffing norm level.

Really a ton of work for such a low paying job, just barely above minimum wage.  High turnover here and their other Cape locations, not only for DR staff, but CNAs, etc.  There are always job openings.

Even with the cons, great experience, and loved working for the residents.

I have been employed at Maplewood for about seven years.  The experience from interview to hiring me was very flawless.  I had a good feeling from the start, and it remained very professional throughout the process.  This job started out as a part-time chauffeur position for our Twinsburg facility.  While there, I took on many other roles in which my people skills were exercised.  Working with the residents daily, became an extremely rewarding experience I never tired of.  I meshed well with management and never had any problems adapting to my roles.  For the most part, the culture is positive and most employees seem happy to be working here.  The most enjoyable part of my job is making residents happy by taking them on bus trips.  The hardest part would be finding out when their health is declining.  It's a job that involves your "heart!"  I am currently working at our Cuyahoga Falls facility where an opportunity arose and I ended up transferring.  To sum up.......this is a good company to work for with many opportunities for advancement.

I could not have picked a better place to begin my professional career. I have found some of the best mentors among this company that will have shaped me for all of my professional careers to follow. Not only are the staff compassionate and caring towards me, they are towards every resident as well. Everything they do is to make sure every resident has the best experience possible. The company expects 110%, 7 days a week and this is all resident focused. From the layout of the building, to the food that is served, to the activities, to the staff that is hired, the residents are in mind. Everyone I have gotten the opportunity to work with has a passion for what they do. The HEART philosophy isn't something that is just taught and never exhibited; this is a philosophy that the company stands on and every staff member follows through with. The HEART philosophy is humor, empathy, adult autonomy, reaching out, and trust/triumph. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who has a passion for the elderly. This company will prove how dementia care should be done, and follow through with it. It has set the standards high for my career to come.

I believe that in order for growth, you have to be calm and professional in uncomfortable situations. Being in the healthcare field, you have to be resilient. How you perceive things  and deal with situations says alot about your character. Your attitude determines your direction and for over ten years, I have been blessed to work with such an amazing team here at Maplewood at Danbury. Every single manager has been helpful and played an important part in my growth. As a manager now myself, still new to this role, I have learned so much and still eager to keep building on my knowledge. The residents of course, are  the biggest part of my day and I go home knowing that I made a difference in their lives. Big or small. One of the most enjoyable moments for me is listening to our residents during our resident council meetings where they get to voice their opinions and concerns, it’s like Listening to my own grandmother who I lost to ALS that always hit home for me. And to the mother I lost at a young age. Wish she could have experienced this lifestyle. I am beyond grateful to call this company family.
