I was hired as an entry-level woodworker and initially expected to continue learning in that role. During my time there, I was moved into a lacquer spraying position for several months because the company needed someone to fill in while another employee was away. I had to learn the spraying process largely on my own while still being expected to produce sellable products.

After the company hired a new sprayer, I was moved back to my previous position despite the earlier expectation that I would continue to be trained in finishing. The most difficult part of the job was the inconsistency in role expectations and the lack of structured training for specialized tasks.

The positive side is that I gained experience working with finishing processes and learned to adapt quickly in a shop environment. However, clearer communication, training, and compensation structures for specialized work would greatly improve the workplace.

I learned a lot about Hawaiian craftsmanship, premium wood products, and customer relations. The management is approachable, organized, and genuinely cares about both customers and employees. The hardest part of the job can be meeting high sales expectations during slower seasons, but with good teamwork, it becomes manageable. The most enjoyable part is interacting with customers who truly value Hawaiian craftsmanship and being surrounded by beautiful, meaningful products every day.

The most challenging part of the job is mastering the extensive product knowledge to effectively convey the uniqueness of each piece. However, the most enjoyable aspect is witnessing customers' appreciation and joy when they connect with our products' stories and craftsmanship.

Was happy to sell most products because many were unique and/or top quality. Management was supportive and helpful. Work environment was typical for performance-based retail with many claims of unfairness by the most aggressive among them. Still, management pretty good at keeping things civil on the floor and rank and file associates were among the best. The commission structure was fair, but tended to put associates at odds with their managers/supervisors.

Was often on the floor for emergencies or extra store coverage due to absences, resulting in more hours, resulting in more sales, resulting in more resentment.

Bottom line: if you're expecting a combination of great pay plus  100% harmony and teamwork on the floor, you should consider something other than retail sales. This place had a management team that was more supportive and accessible than most.

The company did not offer any benefits at the store that I worked for but it also closed our market so there are only stores in Hawaii remaining.  The pay was good plus commission.  Beautiful merchandise to sell but also overpriced on some items.  I had one manager that was good then we got a replacement manager that was  poor.  The store closed so it didnt really matter.  I think the CEO could make some changes in pricing so all customers can be accommodated.  Theres many things that could have improved our business to kept us in a viable market.  If you are in Hawaii and need a sales job and love to sell, then try them out.  I understand they have to offer benefits there.  I dont know why it wasnt offered for our store except they probably didnt want to pay for it.

The hardest part of the job can be handling peak hours, but it builds patience and problem-solving skills. The most enjoyable part is helping customers find exactly what they need and seeing them leave satisfied.

After a few disappointing experiences elsewhere, I was cautiously optimistic about trying something new — and I’m so glad I did. This was hands-down the best experience I’ve had in a long time. Everything was handled with precision, communication was consistent, and the results were excellent. I now have full trust in this team and feel like I’ve found a place I can rely on long-term. It’s refreshing to finally feel confident in who I’m working with.



Martin & MacArthur was a wonderful change and a challenge from working as a Golf Sales Manager.  Here I learned about the artists, how each artist created their pieces of art, the furniture, koa, how exceptional furniture is created by master craftsmen and sales and management skills.

The VP of Retail was a great trainer, patient and held great weekly meetings.

The hardest part of this job for me was working in the retail environment.  I believe had I worked in the corporate office I may still be there because I truly enjoyed their mission and being surrounded by the exceptional art.
