Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital

I was very excited to come to work for MFB.  Everything I heard from people who actually work here was nothing but positive.  Orientation actually encouraged me more. This was a company that actually cares about its employees and realizes that happy workers translates to better patient care. The CEO is extremely approachable and his vision for MFB was inspiring. It made me feel good about working here. That has all changed.  In the 6 months I have been here, the entire focus of Outpatient Services has changed, and not in a good way.  Extremely employee-unfriendly policies are being implemented with no thought given to the ramifications and the "trickle-down" effect of said policies.  Outpatient Managers are "resigning" on a nearly constant basis now, and the result is an atmosphere of fear and paranoia among the ranks.  Those of us with strong opinions are afraid to express them for fear of being the next on the chopping block.  This is not why I came here.  One has to wonder whether the CEO is even aware of the chaos and disorientation that is pervasive within the organization now.  He has basically handed the reins over to an individual that, while determined and focused on attaining the "best" Rehab facility designation, is moving forward like a bull in a china shop and missing the implications of his decisions. I am not sure how long I can stay given the way things seem to be going.

MFB has excellent, safe patient-staff ratios, no mandated overtime, and great incentives almost always available. Most of my coworkers are helpful and encouraging--like any hospital, there are some nurses who don't want to help their techs, but many who are so willing to lend a hand or jump in when you're drowning. The atmosphere of Restoring Hope and Freedom is actually not just something they show in the ads--it truly is the atmosphere there when you're working. Not sure how they do it, but they hire most of the right people I guess! Management is good--manager is very helpful when I have questions, though communication can be spotty. If you're in school, the Resource position is awesome. This is an ideal place to start as an NT as well--orientation is longer than other facilities (unless you're ready to come off early), and you do not have to have previous experience or be a CNA. You will learn a ton from working on all the different units. Hoping they stay this welcoming and encouraging to their employees as they grow. Employee safety is a priority. Ultimately the patients make the job, and it is a highly rewarding one. From what I have heard from others who work at nearby hospitals compared to what I have experienced at MFB, overall, MFB treats their employees significantly better and the atmosphere is more pleasant even on crazy days. 

Mary Free Bed nursing and therapy provides high quality patient care. Unfortunately, management and leadership do not seem to have their employees best interest at hand. Nursing and therapy are consistently understaffed, and management is not proactive about filling open positions, which leaves employees working short-staffed for weeks to months before positions are filled. Management also demonstrates poor communication and seems to have little understanding of how much work is being piled on to therapists' plates.  There is constant chatter about clinical staff becoming burned out and little opportunity for transition to non-clinical roles.  Management seems to speak to the higher-ups rather than promote decisions that would create a better work-life balance for staff. The majority of your day-to-day co-workers, however, are extremely knowledgeable, dedicated to their patients and purpose, and willing to provide support and mentorship. 

I had always been proud to say that I was a part of Mary Free Bed.  On the outside they project many positive outcomes.  Unfortunately on the inside management feels compelled to put their staff in fear of loosing their jobs in order to increase productivity.                               
Furthermore, they continuously downsize their staff to meet budget.  They increase your responsibilities and then put you on a 90 day PIP after you’ve been at MFB for years.  This is the standard practice to weed out older/high paid staff and replace them with younger, cheaper, less experience employees.                                                  
Management only cares about their bottom line, not their employees happiness.  They use a micromanagement style that consistently adds stress daily.
Management is not approachable or trustworthy when issues arise. Staff does not feel they can go to upper management for resolution as they cannot remain impartial.
I just don’t understand why they hold onto poor managers and continue to loose loyal hard working employees to downsizing or poor working conditions. Many previous employees continue to report dissatisfaction to HR with no resolution foreseen!

Great mission overall, MFB does a lot for the need for rehab and it’s amazing. If everyone had that mindset it would be awesome. Management in o+ p is absolutely horrible.. they never will understand the great employees who they have and the ones they have pushed out. No opportunity for growth even though they tell people there is. You get paid nothing compared to other places even if you have a degree, and they will tell you you’ll get raises but you actually don’t. They treat you especially if you are a PCC in a way that’s you constantly can just do all the work for others with no appreciation or recognition instead the management will always talk down to you. You have consistent hours which is nice but the environment is always gossiping, drama, and someone always is having things to say that has no relevance to what we should actually be doing. The only thing that kept me there were the patients because helping people is so important and a passion if you want to be there. 

Mary Free Bed does amazing things for the public. That being said, most of the lower-ended employees are treated as if they are expendable and management is scarce. So far, I've seen 5 management positions just get cut without explanation. The bottom line is more important to the higher-ups than they let on and it is pretty obvious to most. I've witnessed positions gain new titles just because the old titles were making more money at different organizations and rather than match the growing salaries, MFB chose to just create a new position that didn't have as high of an average salary. People appointed to "lead" positions treat it as if it's a privilege in which they now have to do less while getting paid more. Eyes roll and sighs escape any time a problem is brought to one of them. 

In summary, there is virtually no leadership or guidance, and the salaries are lower than most will offer.

I love love loved my job at Mary Free Bed at first. I loved working with and talking to all of the patients and their families while at work and still to this day, that is my favorite part of this job. My biggest reason for wanting to leave Mary Free Bed is the department to department interaction. It is very inconsistent. Anytime you call a different department for help or with a question, they basically tell you it is not their job. Even security is not willing to help sometimes. There are also so many changes going on in Mary Free Bed. Not only with the renovations but also with each department. Each week you come in, there is a new job description for you. The managers are awesome and try to accommodate everyone. It just gets old not knowing what will happen from week to week and kind of being stuck on your own when a question or situation arises and no one is there to help.

How can the CEO of the hospital hire his own son to be Vice President of Orthotics Prosthetics when other candidates were better qualified? This is supposed to be a mission driven non profit not a nepotistic  family business. Shameful.  In general most people leave within 2 years. In my short few years 70 percent of the staff turned over. Very poor management especially clinically with the consistent notion that practitioners, technicians, and administrative staff are replaceable.   What they don't realize is that in our field people are the commodity - the relationships they build and the caring treatment they provide. Successful organizations especially one that touts patient care prioritize clinical and administrative staff.  In general this is a punitive, blame ridden headquarter staff. I recommend avoiding a job there if  possible.

My leader and her leader check in on me regularly to make sure I have the resources needed to be effective in my position.  I feel a strong sense of pride from others in working here.  I've worked at other healthcare organizations in the area and can honestly say the compassion of our leadership, opportunities to advance and general resources and benefits are well above other healthcare employers.  Leaders truly care about team members. When I tell people/friends where I work and what I do, they immediately start praising the organization as a wonderful resource in the community. This really is a great place to work. 

After nearly a decade with Mary Free Bed, advancement opportunities were not available and I was paid two-thirds of what I would have made at any other organization. 
I enjoyed the people, the heart, the community, and the work. What's more, I appreciated the work-life balance and flexibility which is promoted. 
Ultimately, however, I was overworked and undervalued. After submitting my resignation, the people continued to be loving as I wrapped up my work over the next month, but Mary Free Bed as an organization burned its own bridge with me by posting my job for more than what I was making, denying me the year-end bonus for all staff, and not paying out any PTO. I was very disappointed in its policies and how it handled separation. I wish I had given less of myself and left a long time ago.
