Working as a massage therapist for hospice, you receive no benefits. You are paid only per session. The fee per session is ok as long as you keep sessions short. The fee is not even close to being good for an hour session. I was constantly doing notes on the computer, and often I was told my notes weren't good enough and told to do them again. If I took how much I made per week and divided it by how many hours I actually spent calling patients, driving back and forth, seeing patients and doing notes, I made about $11hr.
The fee received is supposed to be for massage session and time used to write notes. You must hand write notes in patients files and also type up clinical notes in the Masonicare system. You must also hand write notes for patients hospice files that are at the main office and turn them in weekly.
Weekly notes are also needed for IDT meetings. IDT meetings are very long.
Massage therapy pay is based on an amount of money set aside by Masonicare's charity, The tree of Life foundation. The massage therapist is told how many sessions that can be done every week.
Sometimes my case load of patients was 15 and a few times, it got into the 40's.
When more people were requesting massage therapy, it made it hard to see other patients as often. The massage therapist is responsible for recommending how many times per month a patient is to be seen. 
The job is very rewarding and I met so many wonderful people.
I felt like I was constantly defending the need for massage for hospice patients to many medical professionals.
The nurses and social workers on the Hospice team are all wonderful and caring people. The same cannot be said about others at various nursing homes and some at MHC.
I was also often treated like my job was a joke by and it was very hurtful.

I loved also working at Masonicare at Newtown! The building between the staff, the residence, and family always felt like home to me. It always felt like my home away from home. Originally I started working for MAN as a Certified Nurses Assistant. I was promoted to Administrative Assistant for Social Service and worked as a CNA on the side to make extra cash. I did that as well in the Wallingford Campus during my whole stay at Masonicares continuum. 

Once I was promoted, shortly after they combined my rolls as a Administrative Assistant for Social Service and Admissions I had a lot of hats, played a lot of rolls. Everyday was different, everyday I helped both departments. From answering phones, education on LTC placement, LTC Dementia placement, STR stay, and Assisted Living. Educating residents and families on the waiting list to be placed at one of the locations, giving tours, and completing any and all legal documentation for state requirements. For our LTC residents I would open bank accounts and educate them on the processes. 

I would take care of mail, distribute accordingly, meet with the interdisciplinary staff every morning to see what beds were open to fill them appropriately. Fax near by hospitals with our bed availability for STR placement. The culture within this wonderful continuum helped me understand all walks of life. I met so many wonderful people with all different needs and wants.

I enjoyed every moment of my job. I love the fact that there was so many different needs and thing I had to do to help my team. It was hard for me to leave but I would always visit and still do. I keep in contact with staff, residents, and even family members checking in on them as they do with me.

A typical day is the floors being short staffed no matter how demanding or how much care residents required. They staffed based on "census" which is basically the number of residents in beds per floor but they didn't care about how much care each person needed. They would constantly short staff and not replace staff if they called out. Family members complain about the lack of aids on the floors and the amount of time it takes to respond to the resident's needs yet the management and administration could care less as long as they are getting their paychecks at the end of the day. I care about my residents but leave knowing that I can't give adequate care because of the amount of work dumped upon us. The sad thing is the residents are the reason why the administration and other higher ups ,who refuse to provide better care, are even getting paid and have jobs. Best nursing home in CT? Yeah okay their fancy commercials and marketing tactics are going to fail quickly as soon as word of mouth starts to take over and people stop recommending them. Oh and nursing staff beware they will change your schedule whenever they feel good and ready with little to no warning so dont make any family plans or plan vacations around your schedule you initially get. My schedule changed four times in a year! I had absolutely no say. And they wonder why they are losing staff.

I worked as an Admissions Coordinator educating local CT callers and walk-ins on what we had to offer them or there family members. We offered, LTC SNF, LTC Dementia placement, Assisted living, STR, hospice, Geriatric psych placement, ACU hospital stay, and IL placement. 

Depending there or there loved ones needs I would give a tour of that unit, educate them on the rules and regulations, bed coasts, and if admitted or needed to be placed on the waiting list educate them with the legal paperwork to apply. I would also educate families and loved ones once admitted to any unit on the bed rates and help complete the financial legal documentation to MHC and what the state needed to be up to par with state regulations. 

Everyday was different, I loved that about Masonicare. My phone was the main contact number for all adds in the CT Post and/or other sites online. I would first listen to all my calls and expedite them accordingly. Since there are only so many hours in a day I would divide my calls with my department so we could all get back to everyone in a timely manner. 

Management staff was great. I really enjoy working with others, the staff, the walk-ins, and all the families and loved ones. It feels so good to help others. I met so many people from all walks of life. I'm humble for that and the opportunity I had at MHC, Masonicares continuum as well.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Not a good place to work at all. They treat their employees like trash. The only ones they look out for are the higher ups. HR is a complete and biased joke. The pay is terrible and they over work you but they also tell you to make sure everything is perfect every day. Please do yourself a favor. Find yourself another job before working here. It's sad because a lot of the hardworking employees are great and the residents are amazing 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everything.  They way the higher ups or anyone in authority treats their employees.  Severely overworked and under staffed.  Let's not forget the pay. You rarely ever get raises.  Just not at all a good environment to work in. Especially if you want to be treated with respect and appreciated. Don't work at masonicare 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
TOXIC. VERY TOXIC. Make you break your back and don't appreciate anything that you will do for them. Most of the higher ups look down on their employees like they are so much better than them. Especially the administration.  What a terrible and horrific administration. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Punching in and waiting 8 long grueling and backtracking hours until thankfully you can finally punch out

I started at Masonicare per diem 8 years ago.  As my children got older, I went from per diem, to part-time (24 hours), and then to full-time.  One of the best things about the organization is that it's a place you can grow.  Our culture is to promote from within, and so many people here are proof of that, including me.  In fact, the CEO started in the kitchen 30 years ago!  Another positive aspect for me is that Masonicare is a not-for-profit and has been around for 125 years.  It makes a big difference in the culture to have that mission-based background and history, which means you'll be working for a company that has a heart.  You won't be working for a big healthcare conglomerate that's eating up everything in the state.

No company is perfect but I don't think any issues we might have are different than anywhere else.  All organizations are working leaner these days.  I've seen many people leave the company thinking the grass was greener somewhere else, or because they were offered a few dollars more, and after a month or two they're back at Masonicare.  I think that says a lot.  One last thing- my co-workers are awesome and my supervisor is so supportive.  It can be hectic here but we have fun getting things done!

Temporary receptionist hired for 32 hrs. a week. Phones are very busy in the morning, but slow down in the afternoon. Trying to get access into the software applications that I needed to use took 3 1/2 days to get set up. Training was the worst that I have ever had. He did not allow me to use his computer and late on the 3rd day I finally got access to the programs that I needed to use to complete the job. On the 4th day at work he said that if I had any questions to ask now. However, he was logged onto the computer at the front desk and I had to find another computer to log onto to get the feel and see where the information that I needed to use was and I had run back and forth to answer the phones. It would have been so much better if he let me use his computer while I was at the front desk. This is not the way to train people. Manager seemed nice during the interview, but working under her supervision, she was very dysfunctional and seemed to be more interested in sitting around and socializing. I never had any interaction with her during my employment. The other managers, nurses and co-workers were all very nice.

I have to disagree with any of the haters who have written poor reviews of this company. I have been with Masonicare since 2008. I have been promoted twice since then. The corporate culture really is to promote from within! They do alot for their employees and have improved on benefits offerings year over year since I have been here. They have a 401K with matching! Most companies have done away with that, but not Masonicare. There is always plenty of equipment available to me to do my job and staff to resource for assistance. The proof is in the pudding - Masonicare has more long term staff than any other company i have worked for. They have low turnover and are never short staffed. They have not used any agency pool staff since 2008. The facility is clean and the residents are well cared for. I could never work somewhere where the residents were not first priority. Masonicare's management works under a "patient centered decision making" model - basically, they put patient care first. You would be lucky to get hired at this fantastic organization. if you dont believe me, see for yourself.

Provide technical hardware and software support for desktop PCs and printers as required. Be the contact for end users' questions, issues and activities related to use of corporate, affiliate and department-specific data and voice information systems, services and technologies.

Responsible for answering helpdesk calls/requests, identifying and diagnosing problems, managing tickets and service requests, and fielding questions regarding the use of a variety of standard desktop applications such as MS Outlook, MS Office and other operational information systems. Performs triage of end-user situations and directs calls that can't be answered to supervisor or other IT staff experts as appropriate.

Evaluate, recommend and implement new technologies and automated helpdesk systems and tools in order to meet the needs of the company and provide efficient and effective support to a diverse and distributed workforce.

Manage corporate computer and communications infrastructure in efficient and effective manner. Interact with consultants and 3rd party vendors to manage day-to-day computer and communications systems operations.

I was lucky to work with such incredible colleagues and residents of the health center and corporate affiliates of Masonicare. I am super appreciative of the relationships I was able to build and the career development I was able to build upon in my time there.
I ultimately decided to leave the company due to lack of opportunity for internal growth and poor management.
I was very disappointed with how my time at the company ended. Despite giving two weeks notice and leaving in good standing, I was told not to come back after only completing a week. I wish I could have had the opportunity to say goodbye to my amazing coworkers and residents I got the pleasure to know and interact with on a daily basis. I wish those incredible individuals nothing but the best and I will miss getting to see them every day.
I hope the companies leadership takes a good hard look at how they are running this business and losing talent due to not promoting internally and poor management.
Masonicare has good potential but needs to deal with these issues if they don't want to continue on this downward trajectory.
