The people who work at this hospital are good, loyal, hardworking and do their best, but when you don't have the supplies you need or the staffing needed for the acuity of patients it's a problem! It's difficult to give good nursing care to patients when it's one nurse to 7 or 9 patients! It's not a safe environment at that point and it's poor care to patients regardless of the wonderful and caring staff that is there for the patient. It's a game of knowing who you know when it comes to placement in a job or advancement. Favoritism is also a factor in the scheduling or getting pulled to other units within the hospital. Expect to work on any unit at any given time depending on the census or need. Nurses may work as CNAs or sitters, ER nurses may be working on the Tele/Med-Surg/Ped/Catch-all unit or ICU, the ICU nurse may work Postpartum! It used to be a wonderful place to work but over the years the morale of the hospital has dropped dramatically! Management looks at the numbers and is more concerned with patient satisfaction than the happiness of their employees. Happy staff means happy patients and better scores! There are a lot of good nurses, environmental services staff, respiratory staff, lab staff, cna's, uc's, etc at this hospital, but the work environment is miserable. The community knows more of the wellbeing and going-on's of the hospital than the employees do. Employee suggestions/concerns are asked about but not taken seriously or listened to or considered seriously. Some units have a problem with lack of communication, the cna's won't always tell the nurses any abnormal vital signs right away but may wait a few hours. Some of the doctors don't communicate on the care of patients and will write orders that contradict the other doctors' orders. I learned that a jelly bean is a jelly bean, meaning an employee is an employee regardless of your field of work and are expected to fill the missing position anywhere in the hospital. Some supervisors will help you when you need it, others suddenly become MIA (missing in action) and aren't seen until way later. The way things are done/handled may change from day to day depending on how it fits the needs of administration at that time. There are a lot of changes are needed to make this a staff friendly environment again. More nurses are needed to lower the ratio of nurse:patient. When the staff is stressed due to time restraints, treatments needed, medication times, doctors rounding, and documenting, the quality of care is comprised! Hire more GOOD HARDWOKING nursing staff to cover the census and lower the nurse to patient ratio!!

What I enjoyed the most working at McLeod was that I could make my own schedule. I was PRN status and in college so the flexibility was fantastic. I did meet some great people who were also sitters who made the days less stressful.

The short staffing in the sitters made it so the nurses were telling us to sit with multiple patients when it is supposed to be 1:1. Given that many patients were placed in the hospital because of safety issues to themselves and/or others, 3-4 patients to one sitter was highly questionable. Sitters were left to fend for themselves when it came to securing our breaks, even with floaters giving relief.

Sitters are not allowed to do anything but watch their patients. If you’re lucky you can watch TV with the patient. I’ve heard of other places with sitters who were allowed to have means of entertainment during the downtimes which were nearly constant as patients tend to sleep the days away. No alternatives were ever given to us.

Another thing is the attitudes from nurses, MSTs, and other staff who were “higher up” from sitters. They would often talk badly about us and treat us horribly when we would alert them of any concerns. It was so unprofessional and most times I dreaded any communication with the patients care team. This is not how things should flow with patients such as those I worked with.

The pay was okay but I felt it to be a bit low considering we had to pick up the slack from short staffing and had to deal with so much mental stress and burn out. The lack of support from our department and the patients’ care teams was a huge factor in this. Any concerns reported by us fell on ears that didn’t care to listen.

Lastly, the behavioral health patients deserve better. They deserve better rooms, accommodations, nurses, treatment, and even better bathrooms. Something was always breaking in the bathroom, the rooms were depressing, and nurses were almost always dismissive. McLeod needs to invest in an actual behavioral health unit to fully address and meet the needs of this specific patient population. 

I have been with McLeod Health for over three years and have experienced so much development and personal/professional growth during my time so far.  As a Director, there is never a dull moment  and there is always something to do or something new to learn.  I admire management across the board for their leadership and have gleaned best practices from watching them over the years.  I am not involved in direct patient care but support in other ways.  The workplace culture is mostly positive and there is (for the most part) a sense of working together to achieve organizational goals that ultimately benefit the patient.  It is not uncommon to see mutual respect among employees across departments and across the chain of command.  I have found most of my fellow coworkers to be amicable and helpful when I have questions and they are patient with me if I make mistakes.  You will have those who do not work well with others in any organization and any field you find yourself in, so I try to look past any negative experiences so far and focus on what a wonderful team we have and how strong McLeod Health is as a brand.  I am thankful to have found such a specialized position in my rural community and I consider this hospital to be a true blessing. I will continue to support this hospital system for as long as we are in business.  Thank you!

With oncology being such a needed field of research, study, and treatment, this place really needs to grow. The 6 doctors that I had the pleasure of working beside everyday really had to have their heart in this. They were all way over worked, most likely under paid, and it was like there wasn’t enough time in the day to complete necessary tasks for patients waiting on cancer treatments. This is a good job if you like being really busy with no help, and taking on the jobs of 3 other people while not receiving the compensation for doing so. The management favors people who have been there for longer than most, and mostly like anything at McLeod, your name and who you know will determine how far you make it and how much money you end up with. The benefits are garbage. Being an employee doesn’t mean anything to anyone else in the hospital. The only thing I loved about this job were the patients and the relationships I developed with them. Maybe a handful of employees I worked beside. But other than that, there is no room for advancement, no competitive pay, what you see is what you get no matter how many tasks you can successfully complete to help the entire office run smoother. 
They will drop you if you need to take time off, even in events of bad health, emergencies or family issues that cannot be avoided, yet managers can take leave early when they want, and take off random weeks to visit the beach. 

A typical day is usually busy and depressing due to all of death that is around me. I have learned a lot of stuff at this job from taking blood sugar sticks to inserting foley catheters, improving my social skills and more. The hardest part of the job is accepting the fact that someone that you care for on the daily basis is soon going to face death. During the death process, you become so fond of the patient as well as the family members. It's like they become your family and it's really hard to say goodbye. The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to work with some of the best co workers you can possibly imagine on your team. The relationship that we all have is more than friends, but we are family. My coworkers make the dying environment around us so suitable for anyone to work in. For the 4 plus years I have been at Mcleod, I have noticed that management does not really care about you as an individual. It saddens me to know that with all of the new buildings that are being built with the Mcleod ensemble on it; the ceo's can care less about compensating their employee's fairly especially those that are technicians. It goes to show you that if you are trying to gain experience as a tech first to become a nurse in the future, you better prepare yourself to work extremely hard and get underpaid.

McLeod Health mission driven work place with integration of all employees into the mission. Very caring workplace for staff and patients. I have had many opportunities to explore  different areas of patient care while working for McLeod Health  that I might not have had at other hospitals. 
The most enjoyable part of my job is having been part of a person's well being and having the patient and family state they were glad they chose McLeod. I have learned a better understanding of work place culture as a result of my employment that allows me to interact better in the overall culture of my community. A typical day at work could be a combination of in-patient care and out patients for testing or procedures that 2 therapist were assigned to give attention to. Also being called by other hospital staff to solve patient and equipment problems that arise. The day also called for interaction with out patients to confirm the next days out patient schedule. Management was very supportive and the hardest part of the job was not being able to always cover all the assignments that occurred during the day.

The title sums it up. 
The company needs to invest in properly training staff. It all starts from the top. When you have poor management with poor leadership skills, no communication skills, organizational skills that could only work in a small company’s office, and no teamwork or team building training you end up with what is burying the department. I cannot speak enough about leadership and again how providers don’t seem to have proper training in that area either. Ownership is lacking and absolutely no abiding by any of the standards that this organization pretends to praise and hold high standards towards. Confrontational, unprofessional, undermining, unethical and no sense of work life balance. 
You will work hard and it’s all for nothing. You are not appreciated and the environment is so negative it makes you think why you drive your car there to be drained of every ounce of good in your soul. 
HR in this company will not help you when you seek help. It’s disappointing!

I have had over 7 years of experience in a variety of departments at MHFC.  I've had the joy of working with young girls and helping inspire and empower them to a life of activity and self awareness, as well as the profound and inspiring rewards of teaching and training a diverse senior population and everyone in between!  My co workers are all professionals with compassion, humor and intelligence.  They make my job even more delightful each day.  I love the people I train, and the opportunity I have to set an example, to teach, to motivate and encourage.  I have had the chance to diversify within this company through various off and on site training and workshop events.  I have developed a valuable and comprehensive skill set in the health and fitness industry that enables me to work with apparently healthy clients to those with significant limitations.  My immediate supervisors and managers have been instrumental in supporting and encouraging me to do my best and to succeed in my given path.

Job security and advancement
In terms of job security at Mcleod Health, I think the job security is good. McLeod Health is very large organization with 7 regional hospitals and large number of medical practices that serve multiple counties within South Carolina. There are not many advancement opportunities. People tend to be complacent within management and above. This reduces the chances of advancement and growth tremendously.

Overall
My experience working at Mcleod Health has been up and down. There have been constant  process changes with inadequate training. it has become an learn as you go environment with heavy scrutinization for making mistakes. There is poor unity between departments. Both within department and with outside departments. The medical practices within the organization does not work well with Patient Access. There are no cost of living raises. Annual raises are less than the cost of annual medical insurance rate increases. There is no vacation time or sick days. You must use PTO(paid time off) which is accumulated per pay period.

They put people in upper management with little to no experience in the work that they are doing. The trainer had only been an employee in the department a year prior to making her trainer. The manager that I was working under did not have any experience in the type of work that I was doing. The director did not have experience in that work either. My typical work day was stressful. Most of the time when I had questions about certain issues, there was not anyone available to answer them. In some cases if someone was available, they did not have the appropriate answer. The hardest part of this job was dealing with how unorganized it was. There was constant turnover. The only positive thing was the flexibility of my work schedule.
