Sweet Jesus, where to begin...  I guess I'll just start with the rating categories and see where this takes me.

Job Work/Life Balance:

On paper, it's not that bad.  Most positions are a standard 40 hours, though some require rotating weekends, holidays, and/or on-call, and this is spelled out when you're hired.  In practice, you are often left to choose between falling severely behind to the detriment of patients who depend on orders for equipment to be completed in a timely fashion or working overtime.  This is not spelled out when you're hired.  It is not uncommon to stay late and come in on your days off.  Additionally, the extreme levels of job stress make it difficult to leave your work at work.  I'm generally unaffected by job stress once I clock out at the end of the day.  Not at Medcare.  This place weighed on my mind constantly.

Compensation/Benefits:

Actually, they're not that bad.  Pay is reasonable and the insurance is very good.  PTO is generous compared to all jobs, but below average for the industry.  Trust me, it ain't worth it.  Turnover is high for a reason.

Job Security/Advancement:

Security isn't bad, at least until the owner hospitals finally get fed up with the incompetence/inefficiency and either clean house or just close shop and contract with an outside company(like many of them used to).  Advancement opportunities sort of exist if you are willing to play yes-man to the COO.  Qualifications, experience, responsibility, and the quality of your work mean nothing.  Being a close friend or family member of the COO means everything.

Management:

I couldn't wait to get here.  Some of the department heads are actually pretty good, but they are routinely hamstrung by the micromanaging of the COO.  Any and all decisions are made by her without input from anyone else, regardless of her knowledge of the subject at hand.  Any disagreement with the COO is not interpreted as constructive criticism or a valid concern, but as hostility to her "vision".  Dissent is an assault on her fragile ego, and is to be crushed at all cost.

On a monthly, even weekly, basis, decisions were handed down from on high that were clearly not going to work when placed into practice.  When these decisions inevitably resulted in chaos, they often took weeks to be reversed.  Respect for her was near zero, and her communications with her underlings was generally met with a roll of the eyes.  I have never seen such profound contempt for leadership as I have at Medcare.

One of the consequences of the micromanagement is that because all decisions go through her, all communication does as well.  The impact of this dynamic is that there was very little communication between departments, and where there should have been cooperation and teamwork, there was rivalry and competition.  Departments do not work together, rather they jockey for favor with the queen.  

I am ashamed to admit that when I first started, I fell into much of the interdepartmental rivalry.  Mistakes and shortcomings of other departments were caused by their laziness/incompetence/stupidity, and if only they were better staffed, these problems wouldn't occur.  After several months, and after attempting to be more open minded, I began to realize that many talented and dedicated individuals worked in these departments, and they were simply stonewalled as much as I was.

As I alluded to above, another of her many shortcomings is her penchant for nepotism and her love of sycophants.  Promotions and transfers are granted not to the most qualified individuals, but to those willing to "play ball".  While this is certainly true to some degree at any company, it is an absolute at Medcare.  Those with new ideas are dismissed, while those who smile and nod are rewarded.  Many new hires and promotions are handed out to her friends and relatives, and if one of those individuals fails, they are simply quietly transferred to a position with less responsibility.*

*A notable example of this was a former department head whose laziness and incompetence was legendary company-wide.  Literally hundreds of complaints were lodged by patients against his department every week.  Insurance companies regularly called in to complain on behalf of their members as well.  Work was not being completed in anything resembling a timely fashion, and calls were not being returned to patients.  On the rare occasion a patient actually managed to get a call through to him, it was not uncommon for them to be met with profanity.  Common jokes I heard included "Can someone go wake ****?"  and "Is **** the only member of a union we don't know about?"(this is a non-union company).  After literally a year of this, he was finally moved to a non-supervisory position rather than terminated.  Left essentially leaderless, his department began to function rather well.

For the life of me, I do not understand how this woman continues to occupy her position.  After reading some of the reviews for the parent company with the controlling interest(Excela Health), I suspect it's as simple as her superiors being more of the same.  Were she placed in charge of a smaller company or a mid-sized department at a larger company, I would not be surprised if she performed adequately.  Her single greatest flaw is by far her micromanaging style.  With a smaller scope of responsibility, this would probably not be an issue, but with a company as large as Medcare, it is an absolute disaster.

A note on the CEO:  I haven't commented on him because I quite honestly have no idea what he does.  Nice guy though.

Job Culture:

In a single word: Toxic.

Conclusion:

Due to the above-mentioned micromanagement, departments are not able(or permitted) to streamline in any meaningful way.  Work that could be completed by one person requires two or three.  Deliveries that should be completed same day are often not completed for several days, and deliveries that should be completed next day are often not completed for a week or more.  Inventory that could be delivered by vendors to multiple locations for a nominal cost are instead delivered to a single hub and are then transported by Medcare to satellite locations at greater cost and with a significant time delay.  Empowerment is extremely limited, and the impact is that when problems and errors are discovered by low level employees, they must be passed up the chain of command for resolution, despite often having very simple solutions.  Patient complaints and concerns that could/should be resolved in minutes are often not resolved for weeks or months, if at all.  

In closing:  Work anywhere else.  Panhandle and sell your plasma if you have to.  They will take pieces of you that you will never get back.

At first this job was ok; I was learning the tasks and duties of the job gradually. It started to go downhill when I realized how they were treating me compared to my other coworker at the time who started a week before me. I was expected to get the new topics learned within a time frame and be able to do the tasks continually as I learned another new task. This was not the case for my coworker who was still working on the first few tasks she learned a month ago at this point. When I brought it up to my lead that I was getting a bit overwhelmed and that I didn't think I could take on another task at the moment till I was versed in my other tasks, I was told that "You'll get used to it, and you'll get faster at it." making me move on to the next when I wasn't ready to take on more duties, but at the same time not expecting or demanding my coworker do the same.

It continued to get worse when they let the other worker go and brought someone new in who had a family member working in the billing department as well. I was nearly out the door at this point since they had me over worked, taking most of the task burdens, berating me if one small mistake was made even if it was the systems fault where I wouldn't have been able to see or do anything about it, and breathing down my neck to get ERNs done for month end when I had told them on multiple occasions that I had too many tasks to be able to keep up on everything. Things didn't change till I was about to put in my 2 weeks notice, on top of this the manager of the billing department at the time had scheduled the meeting after I emailed her the situation and she made sure she wasn't going to be there that day, which made me feel even more undervalued by the company since it felt like she couldn't be bother to hear what I had to say. I gave them a detailed schedule of what I do throughout the day and the week to give them an idea of how overworked I was, but they didn't really care. They resorted the duties between me coworker and the job at least became more manageable.  

There was now a new issue, however. We were made to start taking phone calls and my coworker was ignoring any calls that came in and refused to take any. i let my lead know that I noticed they weren't receiving any calls, and I was told they would look into it. A month goes by nothing has changed and when anyone asks about the situation, which was the reimbursement department which was affected too, they were told that it had been addressed when clearly nothing had changed. This goes on for another 3 months of nothing changing, and she started taking some calls, but still only 1-2 calls a day where I could get up to 11 calls a day. My work was starting to get behind and I was getting fed up with the manner in which they were letting her get away not taking calls when they are down everyone else's throats about keep the phone queues on. Occasionally I would turn it off to get deadline work done since it needed to be done, and my coworker needed to be taking the calls too anyways. One day I got called in for a one on one with the new comanager of the billing department who had only been recently promoted. They asked me why I was doing it and I told her the situation and how frustrated I was. She said that they tried to get her to do it, but she said no and that is why they aren't making her do it, which at that point I internally asked then who is in charge then. What I told her might as well have gone in one ear and out the other, blatantly ignoring the main issue of the situation which was that the coworker was not doing her job and not taking calls, and then proceeded to tell me "Everyone has issues, I have issues, mine are just bigger than yours." which is the most unprofessional thing I have ever heard. I got wide eyed, and said nothing, and began to just head out the door. I was then told to try to be on the phones. I even sent a letter to our quality manager who I talked to before about the work situation and on how I was mistreated. It was never answered or acknowledged and by the time I left it was 4 months of hearing nothing on it. 

I found out that their family member was very good friends with our leads and the new co-manager, which explained why they let her get away with not doing her work amongst a plethora of other things.

The final straw was that I had done this again with turning my phone queue off, my leads had told me it was understandable if I did this since the ERNs, I do have a deadline and I knew that with Christmas and New Years coming up there was going to be a lot of people calling off so it would all fall on me to do them. We all then proceeded to receive an angry email from the co-manager saying that she needed to be given a reason for being off the phone queue. I then made an email her and informed her of all the work that I had to get done, but to the lack of surprise I received a very unprofessional and ignorant message where I was told there was no excuse, pretty much being told "How dare you try to be off the phone queue." After that I wrote up my notice, sent it in with the last day and was out the door. I should have left way before it got this bad, please don't let it happen to you or let it get this bad or worse.





I worked there for about 4 years. Absolutely loved it when I started. Once we moved from the old location to the new, the entire company/ culture went down hill. Dreaded going to work, always had headaches being in the building/ driving to work in the mornings. The department I worked in was the scapegoat for all the other departments (I’m sure all the departments said/ say that). We had a butt load of work dumped on us because the same department in another location felt “too overwhelmed” so we suffered. Our department and 1 other department had to work late shifts (11:30-8) while everyone else got to go home…where MORE work was dumped because that was usually when people would call because they were done with work at that point and had the ability to call then. Our jobs were constantly being made harder by guidelines with insurances which then lead to horrible/disrespectful phone calls with patients/ doctor’s offices where we were being told we were incompetent and some wonderful expletives.  Any time you brought something up to management (direct or upper) we were never backed up and always told that we were “easily replaceable”. We never got decent raises. Just the minimum “cost of living” raise so all the hard work and hours were for nothing. In the four years I was there I only made $2.50 more when I left than when I started. At one point they tried doing little “activities” to get everyone involved and improve the work environment but by that point everyone was checked out that we couldn’t get into it. At one point they put walls/doors up to block the employees from management and were told if we needed to talk to any of them we needed to schedule a meeting with them and weren’t permitted to use the closest doorway.. we had to walk all the way down and around to go to where our manager was. They said we were too disruptive to them so that’s why the doors/ walls went up. Just all around negative in the end unfortunately. I was so happy when I got a job offer elsewhere. My last day there as I drove away I felt so much weight come off my shoulders knowing I wouldn’t have to go back. I still talk to people who work there and they say it’s just getting worse… 

Anybody close to retirement/50+ years old that doesn't worry would be wise to work here for the benefits until they retire. Graduates who need experience could start here too but anybody looking for a career or long term prospect should exhaust all efforts looking elsewhere.  Billing is continuously held accountable for other departments mistakes in addition to their own. This causes a rift between almost every department and billing. The company can tend to make unethical decisions and billing reps are often the ones that need to explain them to customers. There’s constant turnover because of the combination of the position itself, a bad culture, and hiring of unknowledgeable people. The work from people leaving is expected to be picked up by the remaining workers. Billing was also essentially a call center. Depending on the size of the department, you had to answer phone calls all day, half days, or 2 hours a day. Almost always continuous, besides close to holidays (Black Friday, Christmas Eve, NYE)  there’s never a time where you go 10-15 minutes without taking a call. When calls were outsourced because of staff shortages, tasks were sent from that company to call back so essentially no work was outsourced at all. They give 6 holidays, they’re NY, Memorial, 4th, Labor, Thanksgiving, Christmas. For the first 0-3 years you earn 4.924 hours a paycheck. You don’t get any PTO when hired, you start at 0 hours. Hours for billing were M-F 8-4:30. Better than most other departments who may work later and/or Saturdays or have to rotate Saturdays. Benefits were great and better than most other places. There’s life insurance, spouse, kid, health, dental, vision, short term, long term. 401k if you commit 6% they’ll match 3%. There’s a biannual bonus where you get 1.5% of your years pay/salary if goals are met, which they always were. Pay was around $17 when I left and around $15 when I started. There’s usually annual or bi-annual raises, usually close to a quarter raise. Billing pay overall was less than other departments. 

CEO and Management:  If you are expecting a company that is professional and having a clue on what is going on, its not going to be here.  To start, this company has a hallway full of managers that are personal friends and yes people of the CEO not qualified for the position they are in.  The CEO who micromanages to the point that this company bogs itself down.  This company and CEO only worries about the bottom line, they will get rid of you for even the most minor of savings.  Changes are only brought about if something is too hard for a certain manager so the affected manager doesn't have to work as hard.  
HR:  Have a complaint, it doesn't go anywhere, why?  Because nothing is confidential in the HR department, it all gets reported to the CEO.  Numerous occasions people were let go or punished for a complaint that the CEO didn't want to hear, and if a company was inquiring about your job status for a job application,  the CEO will take it as a personal attack if your trying to leave and better yourself.  
Pay:  Initially the pay may seem good, but after all the deductions you will be breaking even of losing money.  And they will deduct your pay for a cell phone even if it is required for your job.  OH, if you are not a driver then there is no such thing as overtime.  For some reason this company has a problem letting people work overtime.  
Benefits:  They are very good, however HR and CEO stated several times they wanted to change the medical benefits because they costed the company too much money, PTO is very generous but you really don't get to use it.  Oh and they monitor the health benefits to see what you are using.  
In summary this place is toxic and it sucks.  Please save yourself the agony and heartache and just skip over this one.  They just fired several individuals over the phone, couldn't even do it face to face.  FYI

The oncall schedule is awful and local leadership has been known to invite us out for drinks before end of day, has come in late and hungover to work on multiple occasions, and has had alcoholic beverages onsite. Common thread with the focus on alcohol..

Local leadership is a joke and has no idea what is going on. They also have been known to show age discrimination and preference to those not married. On multiple occasions I have felt unfairly scrutinized and my job performance was judged on my age (was told many times I am "not as fast" as my younger coworkers) and my loyalty to the company questioned because I am married.

Business is scattered all over PA and not centrally located and the deliveries each person has are not time-efficient.

It is unprofessional to demand employee personal numbers when we are issued a company phone. It is unprofessional to harass us on our personal phones when we are off the clock and not at work or oncall.
Retaliation for ANY feedback that is not positive is common.

Local leadership makes a habit of sleeping with employees or trying to sleep with employees.

General lack of professionalism from local leadership. Do not belittle employees, especially those who have been in the industry as long as local leadership has been alive.

This is by far the worst company I have ever worked for. Not only is the pay very low, nothing you do is ever enough for the management. There is no communication throughout the company which causes major problems from department to department. Ever since the new ceo, the company has gone down hill ever more. The amount of coworkers/managers that have left over the past year is outrageous. Other departments will constantly give push back because they do not want to do their work. Everyone is over worked for little pay. You an go above and beyond in your position to just get told you need to be doing more. No recognition for trying to help out others. I wouldn’t waste the time to even apply. You will regret every minute of working at this company. The expansion is only causing more harm for the company than it is good. Getting a day off is nearly impossible because it is so short staffed all the time.

I have been a Billing/Collections Associate for Medcare for almost 5 years.  The atmosphere has been challenging yet rewarding for the most part.  My typical day involves answering customers questions pertaining to medical bills they receive and questions regarding durable medical equipment orders.  I enjoy helping the customers and feeling satisfaction that I am able to answer their questions effectively.  I also gather documentation in order to secure clean claim submissions for orders.  I am responsible for contacting doctor's offices and hospitals as well as customers to gather this information.  Unfortunately the company has decide to downsize due to a termination of lease space and I am being laid off.

If you work at this company you will work 15 hours per day, 5 days a week, with no break and you will have no life. You will also be expected to be on call as well. 
You will have no help, and some employees will actively work against you, argue with you, try to avoid any accountability, and cause endless frustration to you. Clients will also suffer because they spread staff so thin causing clients to not get the medical supplies and equipment they need. 


I worked in the repair department, which is a non-revenue bringing department so the company did not staff the department properly.  I was one of 5 people and there should have been at least 10 people in the department to have it run smoothly and have the employees have a proper balance of responsibility.  I felt beaten down on a daily basis with no feeling of accomplishment because every time you completed one task you were rewarded with 2 more.
