My specific location is rather extraordinary, in that we have a great team of clinicians and office staff that work together to accomplish our tasks and goals for the day. Everyone (for the most part) is warm and inviting, and you do have a bit of flexibility in terms of needing to come to work late one day and/or leave early on a different day. 

However, on a larger level, this job is quite a mixed bag. The organization/corporate does not pay according to position standards, nor are annual raises common (regardless of how well you have performed). Rather than truly being given the opportunity for advancement, usually job duties are just tacked onto what you're already doing, with no job title change or pay increase. One of my peers went from not supervising anyone to suddenly overseeing multiple staff, and she received neither a raise nor a change to her job title. This is common. 

Clinic managers are regularly expected to go out into the field and see patients, in spite of how many administrative tasks they have for the day. Many field clinical staff are also expected to keep up with the increasing demands of documentation (especially amidst the COVID-19 crisis), but are also not seeing raises or bonuses for the longer hours they spend in the field. This organization is very profit-focused, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is worrisome when patient care is a second priority to that. Unless you are an RN or PT, there is truly no way to climb the ranks, regardless of your education level, background, or skillset. The company is just not structured that way and really wants to promote this image of being a "nurse run" health facility. We have staff members with specialized licenses or advanced graduate degrees that will never be able to accomplish what some of the RNs (without BSNs) can, simply because they are not nurses. This organization lacks creativity in how to utilize people's skills. It could be due to a lack of innovation/ideas or simply because it's easier (and costs them less) to stick to the tried and true model of only having nurses and PTs occupy clinical management and administrator roles. Other non-MSA clinics often have social workers, public health agents, or even masters level business or healthcare administration holders occupy Program Manager positions. This doesn't exist here, so once again--if you are not a nurse or Physical Therapist, you will not ever be able to move up.

Overall, I think this organization functions well as a great entry-level job for many nurses and even some office positions if you want experience. However, if you are expecting fair wages or even basic benefits like cost-of-living adjustments, you will be sorely disappointed with MSA. While my specific location is stupendous, the corporate office lacks focus and consideration for its staff. My experience with MSA has not been terrible, but that is mostly due to the specific office that I occupy. If you work in a location where your CM is petty or you have disgruntled clinicians, you may not even have that benefit. I would not necessarily dissuade someone from seeking employment with MSA, but I would advise you to ask many questions and always keep your eyes peeled for better opportunities. Working for MSA should be a stepping stone. Most would agree, especially considering the high level of turnover across departments and positions.

After 33+ years in nursing, let me first point out that I have never found a job that was perfect. However, at this stage of my life and not wanting to be in the hospital at bedside anymore, this is a pretty comfortable fit. I now work on the Hospice side of MSA and work-related stress is ZERO. I work at my own pace and don't feel guilty if I need to spend a bit more time with a patient or their family. I feel like my work is important and what I do has value. Am I making the same hourly rate as I did in the hospital? Mostly no, but it depends on which hospital you're asking me to compare. Do I rush around or break my back for 8 hours per day? Absolutely not. I'm salary. Do I even work 8 hours a day? Still no. I wish I knew about this type of job when my kids were younger. I like having the weekends off. I like having holidays off without the stress or split holidays that we had in the hospital. I like being about to sleep at night and not getting up at a crazy hour because I have to be somewhere at 0645. I appreciate not being stressed because there is a 5 min. window that everyone must clock in by. Traffic or want to stop for a Starbies...OK. There is room for advancement, and especially if you were able to relocate to other offices when higher opportunities became available. The workload and scheduling is flexible which allows you to meet your personal needs i.e. doctor's appointments, etc. Team members have been supportive and work together in my experience. They are helpful and explain anything that I haven't known. Management is encouraging, and I honestly feel like they want me to succeed in this company. I frequently hear thank you/I appreciate you. The hardest part of the job is adjusting back to working 5 days per week versus 3 days. My weekends feel shorter because it's now 2 days off instead of 3. It's hospice, so eventually there will be some emotional days. Some hit harder than others. The most enjoyable part of the job is having meaningful work without feeling like I'm spending more time on the computer than with the patient. Also, being able to work without the back strains and stress. 

At the billing center in Vansant, Va, the co-workers are mostly all great. The job itself is not stressful, the stress comes from management. The management doesn't care about its employees. Employees must answer why they need THEIR paid leave time (plt) . Plt that was earned by the employee. If its not a good enough reason employees will not receive plt unless they are management, in that case they can miss or leave early at their convenience even if it is to get their hair or nails done. Non-management employees  can only use plt time for deaths or dr. appointments, even then will be lectured on the importance of being at work. If no plt is available and it is a death, you may get fired or wrote up for missing or be expected to only take a couple hours even if it is a step parent, step brother, or the aunt that may have raised you. Expectations are to be at work regardless of the circumstance and save plt for emergencies, but nothing is an emergency to management  unless it is for them to leave.  The pay is not worth what you put up with. A "raise freeze" has been in effect for many years so no chance in getting any more money no matter how long you are with the company. Imagine working every day hard for a company for 3 or more years and making the same thing you started out with, the same thing that the new employees that don't stay make, but more work being put on you.  Employees receive no appreciation for anything they do. The turnover rate is high at the billing center in Vansant and it is NOT because nobody wants to work in this area. More understanding from management, being able to take plt days as needed, not placing blame on employees when management screws up are just a few things that could make this a better job.

This company is infested with a plethora of ethical issues that puts both patients and employees at risk. The company undermines the role of the social worker whose job is to advocate for the needs of the patient and NOT to  increase company profit. MSA does not care about patient wellbeing or even your professional license, and they are willing to risk both for their so-called leadership's exploitative gain. Social workers do NOT have a voice and are not respected here. Do not trust ANYONE to support you, even those who seem like they empathize with your concerns will continue to partake in questionable practices "to keep the census up" and protect their own jobs. MSA does not care about their patients or employees, the latter who are treated with even less dignity and respect. They have a very high turnover rate because the employees with integrity jump ship, not willing to jeopardize their morals and license. To make up for all the vacancies, employees are suddenly assigned to cover counties across the state, locations up to 2 hours away from the employee’s home of record, with no additional compensation (unless “leadership” favors you). Their 46 cents per mile reimbursement is NOT worth it. MSA will try to spread you completely thin and to the bone because they are too cheap to hire more employees and do not treat employees well enough to keep them to stay. Then when you finally resign, they will not pay you for your earned leave.

This company mat have been in business since 1973, but they have yet to realize it is no longer 1973. This company is so out dated that they could never compete with competition such as Amedisys, LHC or Gentiva.
They spread out staff so thin in order to save a dollar, that they loose in the end. Sad part is that they do not even realize what poor decisions they are making.
Management is unprofessional and unable to preform strategic planning it requires to maintain a professional work atmosphere, as well as professional patient care.
Marketing budgets are nearly nonexistent at $250 per month. Forget doing a luncheon with a physician office (which is what it takes to get the business). Company requires that you obtain a W-9 from any location even chick-fil-a to purchase anything over $25. You have a $7 budget per person to buy food items with.
No marketing budget to purchase promotional items, or collaterals. When you work for this company it is a total embarrassment.
It could be a good company to start out with to get home health or sales experience, but not somewhere you would ever be able to make a career.
If you are not a person who enjoys changing jobs every six months, then this company will not be for you!!
Company will not reimburse what they owe you in a timely manner. It was nothing to be owed $1,200 at a time just in expenses that were spent out on the companies behalf. So if you need your payday and can't afford to foot the bill for your employer, I would also look elsewhere.
Save yourself a headache!

We had a great working team until management changed. Promises made but nothing ever happened. Yes there was a fluctuation in patients but when the census was high there was no additional help with high expectations to still have job done. Two-three admissions along with a ROC and routine visits all on the same day. Weekends were 5-6 admissions along with other visits. Impossible to get charting finished within the time frame. Vacations cancelled because they couldn’t give time off because there weren’t back up and patients had to be seen. Excellent patient care because the nurses do care, just burned out quickly from high expectations that could not be met. Driving 50 miles to one patient and expected to drive again another 45 miles with a full load. Hours were longer than 8 because of patient load and driving distance. Promotions given without proper training and expectation to perform the job without management help. Employees that have been there for years have not had raises and all hard working employees, all have left for similar job and more pay. Seen people lose their job for poor performance but same employees doing the work of two positions. This is quite common. Management does not care as long as the money is coming in and throw down on employees if anything isn’t right. NOT A Good Atmosphere to work.

I was sent to train 3 hours away from home. While at training the employee who trained me did max 1 hr of actual teaching each day while the rest of the day she spent her time working on something that did not pertain to my job position, while I was in her office she actively vaped knowing that it isn’t allowed and that I am 6 months pregnant. Then the last day of training, I was fired for not wanting to do an outbound call on my 3rd day of training. I did not feel comfortable to do so with the lack of teaching. They also said I was fired since I took a personal call, while the person who trained me had taken 3 within the span of 2 hrs of me being there on my last day. The lack of communication and the fact that they were quick to fire an employee with no real attempt to hear what I had to say makes this a job you should never want to work for. They were very inconsiderate as well. If you do work here good luck to you! I am disgusted with this company! Letting your employees vape especially around pregnant women as a health care facility is also beyond inappropriate! They also are very last minute and unorganized.

Most of the time these reviews are written by people who have left the company and are ticked off about something. I have been with MSA in an Administrative role for over 6 years now. I love my job and I love my team. Yes the salaries could be more competitive for similar jobs in the area but overall I am fairly compensated. Management has always been supportive. When I faced a serious illness MSA went above and beyond to help me through it. Raises are EARNED. If that is a job necessity for you then you best do your job. I have never seen racism or blacklisting of any kind at MSA. Amount of vacation time is earned based on how long you have been with the company. Census does go up and down but that is expected. People pass away. New ones come on service.  That is what we do. And if a location is having an issue with Medicare it is probably because of poor documentation NOT an inappropriate admission. Apply. Meet the team. See for yourself before believing what someone who may have a grudge against the company has to say or what I have to say for that matter. Thanks for reading this. If you appreciate workplace toxicity and have a knack for reading people's minds, this is the place for you.  If you enjoy selling a kidney and haggling wound care supplies from the office manager's icy grip every single time the patients' physician's orders change, look no further.  If the type of "office family atmosphere" you desire mirrors something out of a B-rated mafia movie, come work for MSA.  It's a complete and total disorganized, chaotic, hysterical mess.  Nobody knows what they're doing.  The clinical managers last 2-6 months before having emotional meltdowns.  A bunch of absentee, misinformed, robotic lunatics run the place.  It's a wonder the government hasn't shut them down yet.  **YET**  And be warned, unless you drink the Kool-Aid and digest their heaping helpings of mediocrity, the managers will bury you alive, lest you open your mouth for the sake of *heaven forbid* the greater good in patient care.  Run far and fast away from this organization.  OMG. RUN. AWAY.  But don't forget to look over your shoulder and check the back seat before you start your car.  These people are NUTS. 

Pays well below market rate for office position.. about 15-20% lower

Biggest complaints directly related to managers and some tenured staff:  
--Demeaning communication
--Backstabbing and lying with no repercussions 
--Unwillingness to change and adapt to modern processes

A lot of the corporate office staff are nearing retirement after having spent many years with the company.  New employees were not treated well or fairly by those in management. Loyalty at the upper level caused distrust at the lower level.  

Would not recommend to anyone looking to grow or expecting to contribute ideas.  Employees were not trusted to be subject matter experts, and there was intense micromanagement by managers who couldn't play by the rules. There was a strong unwillingness to change processes, and the quality of work and employee satisfaction all suffered because of it.
