Meharry Medical College

This is my first nursing job out of my country, Philippines. I was impressed about how friendly and warm the hospital staff, especially my head nurse, were to us. I was assigned to a Med-Surg unit and started as a graduate RN until I passed my RN licensure. The work started being assigned to about 10-12 patients with a team of 1 RN and a nurse aide, with a charge nurse overlooking 2 teams. We are responsible for performing basic nursing care, assessment of patients, doing care plans, carrying out doctor's orders, discharge planning. My co-workers were a group of wonderful people who welcomed me and my other friends to their community with loving care and concern that allayed a lot of my fears due to being far from home. The most enjoyable part of the job is basically learning new skills, woking with different co-workers in almost stress free environment. The hardest part of the job is in resigning and relocating to another place due to personal reasons.

A typical day of work for me consisted of meeting with the laboratory supervisor to review daily projects and activities. I would attend various committees related to hospital or medical students. There was daily surgical pathology activity, either as the primary pathologist, or as a consultant.
I frequently met with members of administration to discuss laboratory performance, clinical staff concerns,or laboratory issues, such as staffing, equipment, performance in inspections (AABB, State, JCAHO, etc.).
The most difficulty was related, at one point, to convincing administration maintaining of needs for adequate financing, primarily for staffing, as well as for updating equipment needed for state-of -the-art testing. 
The most enjoyment came from working with a staff who consistently provided an effort to keep the medical staff happy, and to pass every inspection that we undertook.

I do not like this company at all. The experience was confusing, disorganized, and frustrating from start to finish. Nothing worked as expected, and every step felt unclear and poorly managed. Communication was inconsistent, and I often felt ignored or left without proper answers. The service quality was below what was promised, and there was no real effort to fix problems when they appeared. Overall, it felt like a lack of care and attention to detail. I expected something professional and reliable, but instead I encountered delays, mistakes, and poor coordination. Even basic tasks were handled in a way that created more issues than solutions. I would not recommend this company based on my experience, as it did not meet even basic expectations of quality or service. I hope improvements are made, but for now, I am very dissatisfied.

Assist student organization leaders in the planning and execution of student events. Serve as an advisor to the student government body and student publications. Created and implemented policies and procedures for student leaders and advisors.  Work with Student Life Committee to significantly reduce the number of student body concerns.  Process enrollment and degree verifications for current students and alumni, issue official transcripts, completed licensure forms and assist in enrolling students in classes for the semester.  Provides leadership for campus-wide events, such as orientation, and graduation.  Serve as the liaison between other departments. Maintained Ellucian Banner SIS System in support of records functions and student organizations.

It can be very interesting working in the psychiatry,when you have a manager that is very supportive and always making the enviroment conducive for operation.you have the opportunity to know how to deal with people with different kinds of addictions.the hardest part is having a client who is not ready to turn his life around or believes he/she cannot do anything other than drug.you always feel fulffilled and happy when you succeed in changing or confusing a client to quit addiction.I have been able to do this so many times and always happy for my achievements.

There is a clear mission at Meharry to serve a diverse, underserved patient population.  This of course provides a sense of purpose, and I felt like I made a difference. However, the mission necessarily results in limited money.  According to Google AI, physician salaries are lower compared to other academic institutions - I didn't compare myself. Also with the finances it seems like staffing is limited and most people are stretched thin. Clinical volumes have been low in certain areas, which may mean easier than average workdays for clinicians. CEO is an inspiring and accomplished leader, but he does not always appreciate the contributions of others, which has led to decreased morale and even departure of staff.

There is no typical day for this position. There are times to which I can handle chemical waste management, as well as biological waste management. Then in the next hour I am resolving issues of chemical and biological safety in research labs and clinical settings. to end the day I may have time to review research protocols involving animals, bacteria, and or diseases for approval in the areas of chemical and biological safety.

Management can be cold towards clientele, especially the administration upstairs (they're literally upstairs). That's a major con when it comes to support for the staff downstairs.
If you're in it to see real recovery you may be disheartened at first, but stick it out and the little gems of accomplishment that happen every now and then make it all worth it....for a while.
You may also get a death threat or two, but only if you don't treat the clients like actual people 

At first I Loved it so much the Doctors, PA’s other Nurses were Great it was all about the patients   Then came Political non sciences and careless thinking with the attitude of my Status is more important than yours or more than the patient’s depending on the day. I truly love my job my patient interactions even all the other things responsibilities they assigned me to do got to be too much for me or my skill set. . I appreciate the ones who supported me for my 100 I did not like the way they Fired me. I do get called to come back and I can’t 🙂

It is a nice place to work. Yet there is not too many advancement opportunities. They don't seem to have much money and there is sometimes a feel of being unappreciative by some employees, but it depends on supervisor. My supervisor is wonderful! I would recommend working there, but not on a long term basis unless they put more emphasis on making the school look and feel like it will be there in 10 years.
