Currently working as a Health Unit Coordinator. I'm only speaking from the non-clinical and administrative side. No room for growth from this particular position. No room for advancement unless you have the right people push for you. Lack of diversity in the high level management positions such as high level directors and chief staff (CEO, COO, CNO, CFO, etc.). Educational background and experience will not mater unless you fit THEIR culture of the hospital. i.e. Currently holds two Bachelor of Sciene degrees, both business related and can only land a Patient Access Rep position that only requires a high school diploma. Seen people often passed over for less qualified and under educated individuals. i.e. An RN that is a licensed attorney was passed over for a Risk Management in favor of a less qualified candidate. HR Recruiters never have an explantion and are often confused as to why you were passed over for the position applied. Was actually told by one recuiter to, "leave MH to gain experience from another smaller hospital and then try to re-apply for the position of interest!" The turn over rate is very high for my unit (clinical employees get their experience and leave for another hospital or continued education). Overall, its a stable company in a shaky economy with good job security. Can gain great experience, especially if you are clinical staff like an RN; RT; etc. and work on the bedside. However, if you do not work on the bedside and work in hospital administration their is little room for growth for certain individuals into management and executive staff due to the lack of diversity of most of these hiring managers. Because I am a person of color, I come to work everyday looking at a glass ceiling and trying to figure out a way to shatter it or to leave this hospital altogether. I recommend that if you come here expecting to build a solid career as a hospital/healthcare admintrator, have your Masters of Science in something, a ton of experience, be ready to take the initiative to take on a lot of EXTRA projects that can potentially help your career grow, and be prepared for the possibility of being passed over for your desired position.

Memorial Hermann System service PBS is the worst place to work. The worst place to work. They have the worst managers ever! That are not knowledgeable. It took me months to write this review but then I thought about how I wish someone had warned me...I really wonder what they had to do to get that job and the Director is even worst. You can go to H.R. About management as often as possible and nothing happens. They treat their employees like horrible and never give recognition. I am shocked that the EOC has not been involved there. Actually as I sit here and write this review I think I'm going to contact them because it's unbelievable that these individual s are still in management. I seriously believe that what goes on there is known and is OK'd at the head. They have the most prideful people in management ever. It's so sad that such a huge company has such low morale . I thought about going to work at another location that's close to my house but I remembered why I quit in the first place. Stay away I don't care how desperate you are from Patient Business Service where the Directors will play games with you and discourage you.  I'm not sure if the entire building is that way but I've heard other people complain on others floors and dept as well.  Just please inquire what the turn-over rate is in the dept you're going to and if you have the privilege of meeting an employee in that dept. ask that daunting question regarding the morale. The benefits are even worst and you would think that a healthcare org. Would have better benefits but no they don't. They only want the money you pay into your benefits which is extremely high. Just a warning and if your desperate and don't mind being stressed and you feel that you can handle it. That place is for you and from what I hear its the same environment that I left. In addition they do not value education there either. Beware...

A typical day at Memorial Hermann starts with the morning huddle; a brief pre-service meeting which is designed to inform the staff of the day's mission, any absent team members, menus, caterings,training, and any other pertinent information that needs to be assimilated.  The management team of which I am a valued asset consists of 3 Executive Chefs, 2 Sous Chefs, Patient Services Manager, Catering Manager, Dietary Manager, myself,(Retail Operations Manager) and the 6 Supervisors who report directly to me.  In addition to the aforementioned Supervisors, I am responsible for 74 additional Food Service Workers acting in various capacities ranging from line cook to utility service workers.  In the brief time I have been employed at Memorial Hermann, I have developed a very solid relationship with my team members through leading by example, consistently making tough decisions with both the business as well as the team member's needs being both identified as well as addressed when needed. Being that our life's journey should be a continuous learning experience, working at one of the South's largest and well-respected trauma centers, I've leaned many valuable and meaningful career concepts. 
Finally, on May 31,2013 a day I will never forget as being one of the hardest elements of my job.  On this typical afternoon our hospital was bombarded with over 30 injured first responders who had just been involved In one of Houston's deadliest blazes, one that cut short the lives of 4 Houston Firefighters.  Equally astounding, and what remains to me to be one of my most enjoyable days was to see the compassion of my fellow man.  We all came together with the Mayor, Fire Chief, Hospital Chief of Staff and our team to comfort, assist, and lift up the shoulders of the victims of this fire, their family members, and the community at large.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Memorial Hermann basically has no "model of care in its institution". every leader wakes up in the morning with their personal goals that must be achieved no matter what. I think there is an incentive to the leaders to suppress the subordinates and treat them like the RN doesn't matter anyway. 
it does not like the RN in real sense, there are no professional nurse aids, No phlebotomist to work, No  transport personnel 85% of the time, etc, the team is a skeleton that puts the RN as a jerk of all trade.  My 22nd year of caregiving, but Working here for less than a year has given me burnout, Psychological distress, never wanting to go to work feeling, and physical pains after work. There is emotional torture and the staff are always ready to be  verbally violent. I think its the ripple effect of the stress within. There's need to appreciate equality and equity. selfishness is clearly portrayed among the leadership and the divide and rule formula. minimal or no teamwork happens unless its a personal consideration. Its real agony to work in memorial hermann. I now understand why it scores 2.9 on google stars. I can never want anyone i know to be employed here. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture is threatening.  The client matters and the staffs do not. The RN : patient ratios are bad. you work without taking break unless you sneak to the break room. at times you cry because there's no teamwork... Discussing issues with the leaders bears no fruits. in the end you are the victim..

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
working endlessly until i see my colleague has arrived for the next shift, then i can handover and call it a day. 
I always promise myself not to complain, but at times its inevitable. i must complain to myself and my colleagues who share the same stress

The job itself was overwhelming and very tedious. There was about 10 different types of medical records and each medical record had its own unique and long way of being processed it took about 30 minutes or so to process just one type of medical record because the process was very tedious. You get about 20 bins each day you work from every MHHS hospital and there’s about 200+ medical records in each bin and every single medical record has to be processed fast. Once you get over the very overwhelming amount of work you get to assign medical records to your coworkers. You are the first person to receive the medical records and process them into the system for the other employees to get work for the day. You have to assign the correct number of stacks to the other employees so they can begin working and if you don’t do it fast enough the other employees complain and start to pester you constantly to give them work. They’re not pleasant about It either they will be rude to you. Also if you don’t give them enough medical records to work on they still complain and blame you for not meeting their quota. The other employees can be very hostile. The job was full time at $16 an hour, 10 hour work days, 4 days a week, and you only get one 30 minute lunch break. You work EVERY holiday except one and you get to choose but since the other employees are older people and have seniority don’t even think about choosing Christmas as your holiday to have off. The holiday hours are from 10AM-8PM. During the interview the managers will warn you of having to work with difficult people and ask how you would deal with very difficult people. Take that as a warning it tells you the type of work environment the medical records assistant has to deal with. Also the medical records office is not part of a MHHS hospital it’s in an industrial park in a far part of Houston, the office is basically surrounded by 18 wheelers.

Loved my work family! Great culture and attitudes minus a select few. We worked hard, drank a lot of coffee, laughed and each contributed to the team in different but essential ways. Typical day was 7-5pm with a 1 hr lunch. MHMG Woodlands had three physicians per clinic and I supported 4 clinics. Each physician having two support staff (One clerical and one clinical) and two Patient Access Reps at the front desk. 
I learned a tremendous amount at my time with MHMG, but at some point my "Management" training stopped and I felt stagnate in my position. They gave me certain responsibilities and projects, but without the proper tools to get the jobs complete. I felt management got busy with their own agenda, was overly pulled by all the different practices. Without enough true delegation it felt like they took their finger off the pulse of their people and focused more on the paper and the quota numbers. I felt they really listened about things that needed to be addressed in the practices, but there was zero follow-up to make those changes happen. In my opinion each mid-management position was given minimal authority to make things happen especially on the clerical side. I was the Senior Business Office Team Lead, I was first line between staff and management. 
I contributed numerous ideas, documents, made positive changes to the clinic flow processes and initiated many positive changes yet even as those changes were accepted and initiated no credit was ever given to me as "The team takes credit" which makes it hard to get noticed when you have intentions of moving up the ladder of success. 
The hardest part of the job was trying to be part of "Management" yet with no real authority to assist the staff when needed. I was instructed to contact my direct supervisor and then she had to contact hers for an answer....it took 3 people normally a week to make 1 simple decision. 

Worked in Memorial Herman was hard for me because I had the opportunity to start there to soon or  that was my impression I just moved from my country, resent marriage and here I had no professional title or experience  everything was new for me.

 Second, the language was other challenge because I understood when some people talk but others was so hard to understand because the slang, I learned that start a conversation with other Spanish Primary language was not a good idea all the time because some of them interpret words totally different than me so was hard too: my manager was a very good professional but we are siblings in my country and here I felt so far away from her as a Nurse that was so hard for me because I realized there start a long journey for me to be came a Nurse again.  

I addition be PCA at University Place was terrible experience good for me that my Art in nurse is my most strong skill that way I could do that kind a job very well but one day I notice that my co workers always gave the more difficult patient like more heavy, more angry, more change diapers per day and 12 hours wow was hard, in that time I asked to somebody to help me be a PCA in a clinic area but they said was no a possibility for me in that moment.

One day I realized that my nurse license is going to be ready in couple of years or maybe three I could not handle it so give up being in that job them I desired to leave and found a different job while my license was ready.

Nowadays, I been reviewing to past the exam and so far I failed tree times, my last teacher (my last shot) she gave me the advise to start as PCA in a Hospital while pass the exam and I been applied in different Hospitals but nothing happen so far always there somebody better than me and  that is why I became unemployed person now it is sad very sad for me seeing that I lost all this time in my adaptation process in this country without Nurse license.

I have learned so much in Banking as a customer service rep, From online to accounting reports, starting off my day is when I had to print out the Report of overdrafts from members accounts on a daily basis and making sure we are not over looking the customer checking or savings account on being over draft and not the customer not getting fees for it, if we happen to find fees id have to contact the member as a courtesy and advise them in future any more then we would close their card out, Also did claims for customers on their account if there is fraud or a additional charge and was not suppose to have in their account, Also closing cards out and sending new ones and activating cards and verifying if I am talking to the customer and not someone trying to enter their account. Receiving incoming calls and outgoing calls to members. Also verifying if the account is dormant then we would have to call them and let them know if there is no activity in the account then their money would be sent to the state. Reminders to them. Helping members on their account transferring from one account to the next. Receiving documents by fax and submitting claims for fraud. blocking cards if they go out of state w out notifying the bank. At the end of the day I would have to call all branches and making sure they send the checks to me and total all of them out and then send them to the Feds. Also reviewing the online complaints and the online applications to become part of the bank. making sure that their needs are meant through online and also resetting passwords online. And this is daily. I also would give the members their payoff amount when wanting to close out on their loan for their vehicle, and then transfer to a loan officer, And if the members have not paid their car notes for more than 30 days, would send them over to collections dept for payment arrangements.

This job is A LOT of work. For one type of medical record you have to go through a very tedious process which is probably like 60 steps. And there is like 10 types of medical records that all require the same tedious process. You’re not just gonna be filing a couple medical records, it’s gonna be hundreds. You get like 20 bins full of medical records throughout the entire day that all need to be processed in and in a very timely manner. Once you get over the overwhelming amount of work, you have to get used to the other employees pestering you for medical records. The medical record assistant is the first person who gets the medical records and if you don’t process them fast the other employees have no work for the day. So they pester you and pester you to give them work. They have no patience at all and just care about getting work from you. The work environment is very hostile. You can’t be too nice to them because then they’ll step over you. If you give them too much work then they complain and get angry, they complain and say “it’s not fair that so and so didn’t get this amount of work.” Also if you don’t give them enough work then they also complain and blame you for not meeting their quota. The work hours are very long, 10 hours a day 4 days a week. You have to work every holiday and only get one holiday off, and holiday hours are from 10AM-8PM. You only get a 30 minute lunch break in the 10 hours you work. The medical records office is in a weird part of town and not even connected to a MHHS hospital it’s in an industrial park. If you can handle an enormous amount of workload given to you, a hostile work environment, and having to work under lots pressure then this job is for you. 

Only 3 weeks into the role and it has so many flaws. No desk to be able to see patients and document. Clique culture where they expect you to be apart of the “ family” or they gossip about you. Very very very toxic. Cubicles packed in like rats where everyone can hear your conversations. Carpets arent cleaned, trash isnt taken out consistently, you have to dust so much because the air vents are old, elevators take forever. People use your desk (if you have one) because there is so limited space. No one respects your privacy, property, or individuality. A lot of invisible rules in place. They are not friendly with new comers. They expect you to just fall in line with how things are done even if there may be a better way that saves time. Commute is horrible to have to pay to park or park free to ride the rail that adds 30 mins to your commute. Trainer after 2 week orientation tells you all the horrible things about the job… said “couldnt tell you before otherwise you would have left, but im leaving after supervision is over in a year.” 16 people in one room on top of each other…. So loud you cant complete calls or concentrate to do work in a room with NO WINDOWS! You cant see sunlight until you leave. You have to eat lunch at your desk otherwise add 30 mins to the time you leave. Then your coworkers watch you like where you are going, where you are at, what you are doing… to run back and tell management. Then casemanagers and nurse are very disrespectful to social workers. They feel like we have to be the savior of everything. They will stop talking to clients and then force you to fix things. Get a job somewhere else. Its so bad we push clients to fill out a survey just to talk about how bad things are.
