What is the best part of working at the company?
Absolutely worst experience I have ever had in my medical career. Worked in the ER for a yr as an NP and this is one of the most unwelcoming environments I have ever worked in. That is honestly saying something considering I  worked in surgery and ICU as an rn for over 10 yrs. Also work 5 yrs ans ann np ant other locations as an np where nps were not valued. The APP team was great which is why I stayed as long as I did but the doctors were awful. Some docs were welcoming but most were not willing to teach and 0 patience for anyone they deemed lesser. Several were overheard bashing the APPs as a whole. Was attempting to engage in small talk at the beginning and was told I wasn't there to talk but to work.   Highly recommend you look elsewhere where. Pay is very poor, they promise that you will only work a few weekends a month but I regularly work every weekend. Not worth the stress of constantly proving yourself to a group of egotistical physicians who don't want you there. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The doctors were awful and didn't want apps there. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very toxic environment and unwilling to teach

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Overworked, underpaid, taking the cases the docs didn't want and if you had a doc who didn't want to work that day they would yell at you for not taking enough patients when I would have 8-10 pts at any given time.

I worked for Mercy at Night for only a couple of weeks. They win you in with the illusion of camaraderie, fellowship, fairness, security and justices. But the reality is everything and I mean everything you say and do will be held against you and you will be terrorize to the point that either you quit or Management will force you to leave in their own particular and internal way. There is no communications, nor facial expressions or compassion due to the atmosphere of fear of losing jobs. 
Also they have no understanding of what diversity is, none. Even though we were trained, staff never showed any of that training. And if you report any inappropriate behavior you will get fired for not "Staying in Your Line." in their own particular and internal way.

Mind you I came in having 15+ year of high experiences in the field that they hired me for. In those couple of weeks I observed the inner workings and behaviors of the staff. It was like they never left the high school mentality behind. It was just like stepping back into high school. Very unprofessional and immature behaviors that made me question their ability to preform their job title. 
Not worth working for a place that has no understanding of their own mission statement "The Mercy Touch." The Sisters of Mercy would be rolling in their graves if they know what Mercy staff has become FAKE.

Mercy Medical Center and Mercy Physician Services stands as an independent, mission driven Catholic healthcare organization serving the greater Cedar Rapids metropolitan area.   

The organization has a strong set ot faith-based core values, but is welcoming to those not of the Catholic faith as well.  

The greatest challenge to Mercy is balancing the high-cost of staffing, supplies and general operations required to provide quality patient care, while still bringing in the revenue necessary to fund operations year over year.  There is strong competition in close proximity to Mercy.

The burden of bridging any gaps in revenue vs. expense falls not only to the staff who are asked to do more with less, but to management who have to spend more time being focused on the bottom line instead of building great teams and innovating to provide great patient care.  

Still, the organization stays true to it's core values, and clearly sets its sights on it's mission.

A typical work day consist of about 35-40 Operating Room cases. We would collect all medical instruments after the case was over.  Clean and disinfect the instruments. After the instruments are clean enough to re-process. We would box them up in a specific container, then sterilize them in a steam Autoclave. You learn a wide array of information in terms of procedure and how the instruments are used, being that we also worked with other departments as well. Such as (Cancer Center, Birthplace, Healing Center, X-Ray, Endoscopy.) Mercy has a good work culture from my experience. Co workers where always willing to help. The scheduling of the O.R. is probably the hardest part of the job. Add on cases, and so many available sets for certain surgeries makes it hard to gauge sometimes. So turning over sets/instruments in a timely manner for the next surgery is key. I really enjoyed working with several departments and learning valuable information hospital wide.

I recently left Mercy after working there for 13 years- I had planed on staying there until we moved in 2022, but it was made clear management had other intentions.  My last few months were awful in this particular MMC clinic- I have never in my life worked in a clinic with so much palpable animosity towards co-workers. There was very little support from peers and management.  Calling in, whether it be related to sick children, or weather related is the worst thing you could do (although they will tell you otherwise). They will work you to exhaustion and show very little appreciation.  I have worked in a few other departments and clinics and have see it first hand.  I've always said that there must be a class that all management at Mercy takes to learn how to treat their staff with little regard and respect.   And for the record, the only "Mercy" you will ever see working there is the sign when you walk through the doors.  

There is nothing I am more passionate about than caring for people. I've spent my life doing it. Time spent traveling to and from work is time spent praying for the patients and the people I'll be working with; believing my life will touch theirs or vice versa. I never leave empty. If I do, it is my fault. Actively listening (especially when you've heard it 100 times before), recognizing that this is likely the last place the patient wants to be in; avoiding being judgemental; when we touch hands or slow down just enough to look the patients in the eye a connection is made that makes their situation more tolerable. Whether they are healed when they leave or just beginning to improve, or if nothing has changed, they know they mattered and they leave thankful. The hardest part is when a diagnosis/source is not found and the patient doesn't leave with an answer/ when we have to tell them there is nothing we can do.

Responsibilities include processing medical insurance claims, medical coding, and maintaining patient records via the EPIC Healthcare system. Performing follow up duties on all claims such as checking claim status, noting patient accounts, maintaining timely filing guidelines all while keeping patient records strictly confidential by following HIPPA guidelines per federal and state laws. Maintaining active lines of communication between all parties such as insurance companies, government entities, patient's, and Mercy Medical Center. Data entry, managing confidential files, staying up to date on all AHIMA and CMS guidelines. 
Management seems to genuinely care about employee the majority of the time. The workplace environment is casual and relaxed, very team oriented. The hardest part of the job is keeping up with the number of accounts, such as credits, follow ups, denials and misc claims that are not going out properly. I really enjoy the people I work with and the amount of team building we have there.

I was the cashier at Mercy Medical Center. I would take and post daily payments for patients. Do deposits from all of the clinics order cash. I would add insurance to accounts to be rebilled. I listened to patient concerns regarding bills and financial situations.  I went over financial assistance applications with them and verified that all the information was included.
 It was rewarding when patients would come back to my window crying with gratitude when they got the letter that their hospital bill had been paid in full.  The relief in their face to have that burden lifted was the best feeling in the world.

The hardest part was when patients were upset and there was nothing I could say or do to calm them down.  

The hospital always had training and educational things you could do.  They also had lots of perks and rewards for the employees.  It was by far the best place I have ever worked.

Unexpected training schedule.  Environment not my skill set.  Management negative.  Enjoyed co workers.  Grateful for experience.  Medical lingo hard.

Mercy Medical Center itself is a great place.  I got along with all of the people there with the exception of I was told I did not fit in with the department I was working in.  There were only 4 of us in there and I was there to do my job. A typical day there was getting there at 7:20-7:30 and working straight through until 4:00.  Often not taking a lunch to meet deadlines and get my load of work completed.  The workplace culture was not a good fit for me because I do not gossip about other employees.  I tend to come to work and do the best to my ability.  The hardest part of my job was having no one speak to me.  No one would say hello or have a good night.  The most enjoyable part of my job was getting to know the rest of the administration at Mercy Hospital.  I got along with all of them very well.  They all seemed to understand my situation and would help me achieve what my office administrator would not.
