Employees were given 1 primary task, 'do whatever you can do to further the interests of Meter Group and make sure your work generates more revenue than costs'.  After that the motto was have fun, and pity the poor CEO, because he is the lowliest assistant, and assistant to every single person in the company from provisional intern to top sales person.

Training for any aspect of any position was available anytime, usually on a one to one basis (CEO or Partner did all the training personally). 

We encouraged everyone to have fun, make friends with the never ending stream of terribly interesting clients from all parts of the world, and to recommend qualified friends to apply to the team.  It was nice to have a friendly atmosphere. Clients (long term, and those who had completed all business with us) would actually visit the office, often, just to chat.  We kept comfortable couches to accommodate.  It was ahead of its time, especially for conservative Europe, but it was great.

And there was always the bonus of any number of free cokes (in cans, of course) that anyone cares to drink.

Pros

-Company chef where you can purchase breakfast and lunch 
-Quarterly bonuses (dependent on overall company performance...which were considerable when I first started, but decreased significantly before leaving the company)
 -Competitive pay & benefits, including generous annual leave time.

Cons

-Nepotism is a HUGE issue. The company is family-owned and most of the employees are related in some way. They almost always fill open positions with family members, even if unqualified. "Legacy" is just another word for "grandkid/nephew/son in high school who needs a job"
-Upper management tried to fix what wasn't broken by shifting the company's name and focus to METER Group (formerly Decagon Devices). The company shifted their ENTIRE focus to new product lines (market demand is still non-existent) and shifted away from more established, more profitable product lines in niche markets. In this process, the company lost many good, talented people, several who now work for competitor companies. 
-Communication is also a MASSIVE issue. Something could be going horribly wrong in your performance, and you won't know until it's too late.

There are a lot of really good, intelligent, educated, caring people at METER. This makes up for some of the faults. The benefits are generous and thorough (very affordable and generous medical/dental/vision, free LTD, STD, ADD, basic life, etc.), compensation is fair and relatively transparent, there are some opportunities for growth and advancement, and there is a strong emphasis on having and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. More work is needed in the area of career development, and leadership is sometimes too change-happy (some top leaders seem to have a hard time letting a change develop and mature before leaping into the next major change, and this can lead to fatigue and burnout). Overall, it's a really good place to work.

 When you're the boss, you need to care personally about each employee, but you also need to provide appropriate challenges and opportunities for growth. There are interpersonal relationships that interfere with what is REALLY going on there. It is a Mormon based company and the HR dept really is not ran by anyone other than the COO. It does not matter unless the COO is on board. Hence the interpersonal issue. There is a very large turn over in the Inventory Dept that truly is the same old issue and because of the interpersonal relationship it will still continue.  The President won't talk about it to you as they cover each other and there religion. Exhibiting poor interpersonal communication, Exhibiting lack of awareness towards group dynamics, Exhibiting lack of awareness towards distinctions among people and  professional disciplines, 


Back in late 2022, the company split, and since then, METER has been steadily improving. Colin, the current CEO, is great. He is an expert on the science that underpins METER's products, he has good business sense, and he is a kind, genuine person. Having him lead the company has helped a ton. Most of the employees care about doing good work, building high-quality instruments, and making a positive impact on the environment, the food chain, the water supply, etc. Good people working together to achieve good, worthwhile results = a good company.

Company has great products and you get to see your work help the environment and industry succeed.  This is great and rewarding.  Upper Management is looking far into the future for possible new markets and sucking the profit and life from the company.  Huge gamble with many peoples livelihood at stake.  Several major investments have failed in the past few years.

SKALA Software is a waste. Management consistently makes wasteful decisions based on nonsensical or ego-protective reasoning, and holds no reservations lying and gaslighting employees to avoid the consequences. Only toxic employees stay, and everyone else leaves. By the end, I could barely recognize myself, and I was crying in my car almost every day. Please avoid for your own sake

The Good: Lunch was pretty good

METER Group is a good place to begin a career and move on to a role with more growth potential somewhere else. Leadership is varied in effectiveness and has many pains of a family-run company. However, this is being addressed with acquisition and new top-level talent being hired.

METER is a rapidly expanding company and as such of course has some growing pain issues here and there.  That aside, I have few serious complaints and many glowing praises about having worked there.  Honestly if I did not need to relocate across the country to take care of family, I would continue to work there for the forseeable future.

Wonderful place to work, with the best managers and co workers I have ever had. The company really does care about the employees. The only reason I left is that I had more experience than what they could utilize and I could use my experience better someplace else.
