Unique department, variety, fast pace and first department to see patients. Treat everything from the worst traumas to the sniffles. Deal with multiple departments and level of employees, from doctors and  upper management to housekeeping. Learn something new everyday from a new skill to new policies. Coworkers come from different backgrounds and educational levels. Management has different styles and knowledge backgrounds. I coordinate the department which involves setting up for the day, completing the daily checks, order implementation, corralling doctors and staff, working with other departments to ensure proper testing is done at the proper times, assist staff, visitors, and patients. For me the most enjoyable part of the job is helping the patients and visitors through education, assisting with needs, and listening to their concerns, life stories, and educating on care, how hospital works, etc. The most rewarding is helping the patients, coworkers, and doctors. The hardest part is mental health care system dysfunction and how the patients suffer. The inability to affection real change and help for those who truly have the need. The dysfunction of the system and the inability to help those accountable for abusing the system and wasting valuable resources.

I started as a new grad in the surgical program, which is essentially like an internship, it lasts 2 years and then you have to give the hospital an additional 2 years in that department for the education you received.  Well, most of the time the educator wasn't there and when she was she was running around acting like she was everybody's best friend and chit-chatting all day instead of teaching us.  She just threw us in OR rooms and we had to learn on the fly and most of the staff in the OR were less than friendly or helpful and the Physicians were even worse.  Eventually, I asked if I could be removed from the program because I was going home every night from work crying and hating my job. they agreed to let me out of the program and offered me a position in the renal unit.  that was a nightmare all on its own!  The person they had as my preceptor had just graduated nursing school herself 6 months before I did and she didnt know how to do things correctly and when I tried to bring this to the attention of my supervisor or the educator I was shot down and reprimanded.  in the end I just quit listening to her and isolated myself from everyone and it turned out that because I didnt eat lunch with the staff in the breakroom together and I did my charting alone and kept to myself, I was considerd not a team player and asked to resign.  I was happy to do so because it wasn't any better than the OR.  A week later I received a call for the position in the ICU at SRMC and it was my dream job!

My job title right now is Patient Care Technician.  I help the nurses take care of the patieints on our floor or any other floor if I float to those floors to work. Help with dressing changes, patient toileting, patient personal hygiene, ambulation, transfer to portable bed for patients to go for tests, discharge of patient to main exit for them to go home, feeding patients who can't feed themselves, orderin their meals for those who can't order for themselves

Management are great to work for and are helpful with furthering education of the technicians by working with their schedules so they can go to school and work too.

Co-workers are helpful, friendly and knowledgable of the job and what it requires.

Hardest part of the job is during a code for cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest.  Usually a very high stress situation but I am able to handle the stress and do what ever is needed of me.

Most enjoyable part of the job is patient interaction and seeing the patieints getting well and going home.

I enjoy working at MVH. I enjoy the clients and my fellow co-workers. I am very involved with on-campus committees; Employee Engagement, Flash Mentoring Program, Ted Talks. 

A typical day at work is at times hectic as well as rewarding as one has to be able to multi-task and do it well. Working with clients, in-coming phone calls, therapists, scheduling, etc. Many valuable lessons were learned but the biggest was empathy for the clients and their current hardships and learning how we could help them reach their fullest potential.

It is at times very trying when one cannot match the clients with the services needed for various reasons but not limited to such things as insurance, the number of providers available, finding the right service needed,etc. 

In the end, however, it is so very rewarding to see the change in a client after they have gone through our program. They way they carry themselves when they leave the program is wonderful and uplifting compared to the way they were when they were first may have entered the program.

My typical day starts with checking in with the previous shift to make sure there isn't any overlying issues. Then I make sure there isn't any outstanding radiology exams left over from the day before yesterday that need to be read. If there are I try to get them read as soon as possible or find out why they haven't been read. Over the years, I've learned to problem solve and prioritize issues that need my attention sooner than later.

Management can have a laissez faire attitude which can be a double edged sword. They'll let you do your own thing and give your room to succeed but when there is a problem it can take time to get it addressed. Co-workers, like any job, is a mixed bag. There are some who will make you pull your hair out and there are some who will get your back for you no matter what.

Hardest part of the job is dealing with the egos involved with the various doctors in the hospital. The most enjoyable part of the job is that the radiologists enjoy showing/teaching interesting things they see on exams.

Nurses will strive to provide patient care in the worst of environments, this was my experience at MVH.  I perceived that the staffing was poor, the environment appeared unsafe, and the accountability was high for these reasons.  Nurses had strong relationships with each other, however the environment was extremely punitive.  Nurses were not supported.  The environment was one I would describe as "setting staff up for failure."  Liability is high in nursing, so for these reasons, I would not recommend this as a work place.  Ironic since the facility earned magnet status, which is really just a matter of jumping through hoops to obtain.  The lack of support from HR and management was evident to me. Nurses at the hospital give GREAT CARE, which masks some of the underlying deficits.  I would not recommend working at this hospital.  Leaving this facility was the BEST DECISION OF MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER!  I loved working with mothers and babies.  I have found a new outlet for this passion.  This is the only company I have worked for where I did not feel valued, recognized, or supported.

This hospital has the right focus - the patient. They are right on track & deserve to be commended for the excellent work that promotes making the patient feel well cared for and the center of our efforts.

A typical day at work on the cardiology unit would be caring for 4-5 patients who go to multiple procedures with a high rate of admissions and discharges. In particular HV7 is a very cohesive & cooperative unit.

The nurse manager is awesome! She is very caring & kind, but expects the staff to deliver their best.

My co-workers are wonderful! We all work together & help each other out during our extremely busy days. The work is challenging, but we all laugh together & care for each other.

The hardest part of the job is the many competing demands throughout the day. It is essential to be flexible & a team player.

The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that you are making a real difference in the lives of your patients. It is very rewarding.

I love working at MVH and feel appreciated by my immediate coworkers (nurses and other PCTs) although I don't feel quite as valued by upper level management seeing as EVS (janitorial) now make the same as PCTs which is frustrating considering our workload is very intense and we are at risk especially now with covid. We get patients that are covid positive yet do not recieve extra pay. We get patients that should be on ICU but are not. We are overworked and underpaid and are not offered even nearly the same incentives as nurses. Sick time is a joke. Every minute late or sick day off counts against you so it is easy to get corrective actions. However I am passionate about patient care and thrive in high energy working conditions so I overlook the bad. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoyed meeting new people and talking to them. Didn't have conversations just a good morning and have a good day or have a good evening. 
Working in a Hospital isn't easy.  It showed alot in their coming and going. Didn't know that until I started working there.  I really enjoyed my time there. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Only stress that I had was getting there at 7:00am. Once there it all went away.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I only was on the entry doors checking temperature and asking the questions about cov-19. Can't really say I wasn't going too let it get to me. I know now life is to short to buy Into that. My time there was going to be short and I felt like if I could make someones day better for than that's what I did.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Taking temperatures asking the questions that I was suppose too and if I new where the was going I gave them directions,In th Hospital.

I was a patient care technician. This job requires you must be a team player and also a diplomat with both staff and patients. I worked with an exception team of supervisors, pcts, pts, ots, doctors and other professionals. You can learn a great deal about any professional level areas of healthcare just by listening and asking questions. I worked in the pulmonary area. It was stressful as many of these patients were elderly and most had a difficult time breathing causes them a great deal of anxiety. I was constantly on my feet 12 hours a day 3 days a week caring  for a minimum of 10 patients with various levels of ambulation, continence, and cognition much of which was caused by the strong meds they took or by their age. It's a great entry level position for nurses.Many pcts did become nurses.
