DO NOT take a job working as a Lab Technician or Histotechnologist in the Surgical Pathology Department. Instead of fixing the slew of problems in this department, they believe that all employees are replaceable that leave. Three people have left for better jobs and salaries elsewhere in just the last month. Don't expect any career advancements in positions or salary because that will not happen here. This department is mostly not union, and the administration refuses to fix major issues in the department that are hindering patient care. RUN. This is the most stressful job I have ever had. They just care about your productivity numbers because we are so short-staffed. Also, they aren't replacing the people leaving and decided to instead "fix" the problem by hiring a travel Histotechnologist (who is making over double the salary per hour as the current employees). Don't get hired in as a part-time or temporary employee. Your chances are very slim on getting changed over to full-time status. If your lucky it will take years. There is a super slim chance of ever getting a decent salary increase. You make similar salaries if you just started or have been there for over 5 years. Finally, they like throwing their hard-working employees on bad shifts and promising them better shifts when they become available. Instead, they will hire new people and give them the shifts they promised current employees. Plus, maybe even give the new employee higher pay (like an extra $5/hour). In conclusion, DO NOT take a job in this department. (Ohh...and we are on mandatory overtime that has no end date and started about 4 months ago).

Working here had been my dream job that I expected to retire from. Lack of leadership from immediate and mid level management and erosion of benefits forced me and colleagues into burnout- the prestige and experience ultimately now is in name only. To be clear, the culture change and loss of trust began prior to Covid and the pandemic magnified just how little our management cared for and advocated for us.

You are required to work two weekend days a month, every month- you can have a flex day during the week but often inconvenient days that don't consider the employees' needs for adequate rest/recovery- to add to this, weekend differential pay has been effectively eliminated for therapists. This is a fast-paced environment with very high expectations- Despite being salaried you can't leave when there is no more work (i.e. no patients left to see, etc) BUT are expected to stay late and work extra.

Exceptional employees are worked into mediocrity because consistent hard work and dedication is not rewarded. I can't stress how little management seems to be aware of the staff culture/concerns- concerns regarding staff safety,culture even though staff communicates these concerns at meetings and in e-mails.

The saving grace is the support from coworkers- who band together and hold each other up. There is alot to learn but things could be so much better here- but therapy staff are just not respected or supported by administration seeking to trim budgets and low/mid level management that pay lip service to advocacy.

I initially wanted to work at Michigan medicine because if the hospitals reputation. I always heard they were top in the state, but more importantly they were known for treating employees well. Truth is Michigan medicine is a rough environment for a Sonographer. Tight time constraints, micromanaging, and mediocre benefits are just a few of the hospitals problems. 

PTO is quite poor,  you receive about 12 hours a month (which must be worked in full). They do not front load sick pay either so it is combined. Compared to other hospitals this amount is quite low. You also cannot take off time (no matter the reason per management) without having PTO to cover it. Basically hope you do not get sick, need to have an appointment or god forbid take a vacation. Currently, we have people working with Covid because they can’t spare the time (an hospital dropped Covid PTO). 
Next, everything is seniority based. It doesn’t matter if you perform better, or just do more. If your peer was there longer they get priority for everything. They get first choice of PTO time, working off site, shift change (any change in hours). It’s really discouraging and honestly unfair when you’re in a large department and not everyone performs at the same level. 
Patients are scheduled with little time. The protocol is quite extensive compared to other hospitals. Expectations for us to prepare paperwork, provide patients time to change,  clean the room, and write the report are unreasonable. ASE guidelines suggest 30 min for a basic echo on an easy patient without pathology. The hospital is focused on quantity not quality. 

U of M claims to be so diverse but they are not. I was discriminated against as soon as I got hired. Management felt I was capable of certain tasks without even letting me try. I reached out to several managers with my concerns at times even crying and I was pushed to the side. One manager even told me we would have a meeting to address concerns and somehow everytime we were supposed to have the meeting and never got around to it she was always “busy”. On top of that there are cliques all in the building. If they don’t like you or you don’t try to fit in they will gang up on you. Management knows about this and they treat the older employees with more leniency. Totally unfair. Staff will yell at you during trying and many times disappear and leave you scrambled and confused. Then complain when you do things wrong. You are trained by a different person daily which is confusing as each person teaches you a different way to do the same thing. This is a very hectic work place. You have pharmacist cursing and upset. The break room is full of drama. Technicians down talk every technician it’s like high school. That place is like a revolving door. There are like 20 open positions as people come and go. Save yourself it’s not worth it. Not to mention you have to pay over 1000$ to park or park miles away and get on a bus to the hospital that’s often crowded. Save yourself please

My first healthcare job after graduating college. I got my phlebotomy certification & was hired on as a phlebotomist. I was nervous at first because, I mean, I’m poking people with a needle & had never done that before. However, all of my coworkers were very friendly & helpful, so I got the hang of it & became very good at it quickly. My supervisor at that time was extremely helpful as well & welcoming. During my time at U of M, I never felt excluded from anything & I loved who I worked with. Most of the patients were nice. But hey, it’s healthcare, so it’s understandable to a point that someone is annoyed that they have to come get stabbed with a needle every other week, so I don’t take their grudges or bad attitude personally. 

The benefits were really good until COVID hit. Then U of M declined in how they treated their employees. No more 401k match, no more tuition reimbursement, no more yearly raise, no more benefit programs or anything. We never even saw COVID hazard pay. It’s all we asked for too. 

Overall though, I would love to come back to work for U of M. I loved my job & I loved my coworkers & I loved my patients. When I move back to Michigan & finish my program, I’m going to reapply to work in my department again. 

Dehumanizing. Incompetently managed. Toxic personalities thrive and advance. Obsessed with the appearance of prestige over doing things that make sense. A hopeless mire of bureaucracy. Being part of the university means policies change every other week from some grad student's research project. Supervisors are only interested in looking important to their own superiors rather than listening to employees. Anyone who has the right credentials or is productive enough in their position is allowed to treat co-workers disrespectfully and downright cruelly in front of everyone all day everyday. They watch your social media for things they don't like and then call you into meetings to discipline you or fire you over them. Even the patients will be horrible to you because they get frustrated by their experience and you're the person who's around to yell at, not the people making non-sensical policy and poor management decisions. The benefits are not as good anymore since they had to makes budget cuts after COVID.

Absolutely loved this job! It was my first job out of school & I not only learned so much from it, but I grew so much. They have amazing benefits, I was full time 12 hour shifts so only 3 days a week. There was plenty of room for overtime, PTO, on call, I was night shift so extra pay (especially on weekends which we switched every other), working 3 days meant I had 4 days off if wanted! I did over work myself (for our specific job, I would have dreams of missing EKG alarms from working so much, and missed out on family or friend activities which was my own fault except holidays restrictions) but it was all worth it for the paycheck. Staff was absolutely amazing & we are still friends to this day. Parking in a ramp was nice but does cost, if you are day shift you park off site and either walk or take the bus which is the only downfall of MI. My manager was very nice, his only downfall was not connecting with night shift as much as needed but very friendly, willing to work with us on anything, overall wonderful experience!

1. "Equitable" raises- This is the hot topic word of the last couple years and Michigan Medicine's way of showing it is by giving the strongest and most dedicated employees they have the same raise perentage as the ones who lack any sense of work ethic- which leads to resentment, and burnout. If you express your burnout- you are labeled as a problem and targeted by leadership. Employee personal well health, well-being and mental health concerns are as an inconvenience that causes further staff shortages so they are questioned and employees are scrutinized for requesting time away or calling in to care for them. Each employee has a "sick bank" of time that they never actually use. Each hour of time off whether planned or unplanned comes out of your earned vacation time. Not worth it. Honestly, half of the recommended practices that patients are coerced to do aren't even necessary for their own health benefit but rather to make this company even more money than they already have. Healthcare isn't what it used to be and Michigan Medicine isnt what The University of Michigan Health System used to be. About the time they changed the name, it became seriously dissapointing to be employed at this company.

You will love the doctors you work with, fall in love with the patients, and get intrigued by the clinical trials that you get to run. Then management comes in, most who have never set foot in a clinic, bombard you with studies to open and run, don’t understand why you are overwhelmed, and everyone doesn’t function as a team. As a clinical coordinator of research, it all falls on you. Turnover rate is high, so you will most likely have to cover for coworkers that quit or move on after a year. There is little to no move of promotions and empty promises- make sure to get promotion promises in writing. Salaries are public, and your manager is making (most likely) twice or more of what they hire you on as. You can get paid 15-20K more to go somewhere else. Trust me, other hospitals are much better. Unless this is your very very last resort, do not accept a job here. With over 20 years experience, I have never worked for a research department so ill-equipped at management. 

You will love the doctors you work with, fall in love with the patients, and get intrigued by the clinical that you get to run. Then management comes in, most who have never set foot in a clinic, bombard you with studies to open and run, don’t understand why you are overwhelmed, and everyone doesn’t function as a team. As a medical assistant preceptor, it all falls on you. Turnover rate is high, so you will most likely have to cover for coworkers that quit or move on after a year. There is little to no move of promotions and empty promises- make sure to get promotion promises in writing. Salaries are public, and your manager is making (most likely) twice or more of what they hire you on as. You can get paid 15-20K more to go somewhere else. Trust me, other hospitals are much better. Unless this is your very very last resort, do not accept a job here. With over 10 years experience, I have never worked for a department so ill-equipped.
