When I was first hired on as a Loan Originator my actual title and job duties were for Loan Production Assistant. I was advised after my 90 days I could choose to be either a Loan Originator or Loan Production Assistant. I very much enjoy being a Loan Production Assistant, but the company previously known as Heartland Bank Mortgage merged with Midland States Bank and now I am being forced into a Loan Originator role while still doing my Loan Production Assistant duties as well as Loan Origination. Since the merger, there are things going on within the company that I do not agree with. I have a very strong work ethic, integrity and follow company guidelines and procedures. However, not everyone there shares the same, yet they are being treated with favoritism.

I love the people I work with, I just do not like the fact that I was hired on being told one thing and now being forced into a position I do not desire to be in.

I'm looking to work for a company that will not be sold or bought out by another company (e.g. USAA, Wells Fargo, Chase Bank, etc). I am looking for job stability, a company that follows their own policies and procedures and has room for growth and advancement.

For these reasons, I am searching for other job opportunities.

Firstly, this is a company staffed at the non-manager level and some team leader levels with some very nice people that are well intended and genuinely strive to do a good job for the customers, shareholders, co-workers and community.  Groups like the HR department and most of the IT department are incredibly pleasant and helpful.  Secondly, this is where the collective good dissolves and the assimilative culture of unreasonable expectations, fabricated optics, resource allocation issues and fundamental leadership issues enters the picture. Withstanding the second point, these are mostly nice people with good intentions and an employee base that is engaging and believes in the mission.  This appears to be less prevalent with the higher levels of leadership.  Accuracy and honest feedback are typically unwelcome unless it is in line with expectations set by management.  Otherwise, the benefits are pretty decent, most facilities are clean and modern, and you get to constantly meet new and exciting people as turnover introduces new faces faster than a speed dating party at a singles resort.   

A typical day at work is waiting on customers to open accounts, balance checkbooks, file debit card or ACH disputes, renew CDs, update customer files, review documents are scanned and accurately indexed, listen to customer's complaints and try to resolve them.  I've learned to be kind to customers when there is an issue because they just do not understand the reason why bankers have to do things they way they do.  Being kind and helpful to customers makes them stay and they trust me because I have helped them understand the ways of banking better.  Regional management is a very good support system to the front line people.  The workplace culture of Midland is great! They are very understanding when there is a need to leave for an emergency, or any other necessary last minute need to leave.  The hardest part of the job is not being able to give the customers what they want.  For example, refund fees especially for those who made an honest mistake and already have barely anything to live on, or higher interest rate that just ran out the day before.  The best part of the job are the people I work with in my branch, helping my customers and getting to know my customers.

I first started working at Midland States Bank when it was Alpine Bank. It was way better when it was Alpine, even for employees. There is not enough compensation, at least for tellers, for the work that we were tasked with, especially my location. We were always understaffed, and when we weren't, management would take employees away that we clearly needed to talk to them or show them something new. Management was toxic. They almost always made it out to be the tellers' fault we were doing something wrong when in fact, if we had the management's help as much as we needed, we would not be in the messes we were many times in. I'd say skip over this company and find a better one. At least do not work for the Rockford Main location. Too much work, not enough compensation. Workers' hours were cut because productivity was not matching employees. People were also randomly fired company-wide to "streamline" business. 

The company has great products and does not push sales or competition. However growth is slow in the Saint Louis and southern Il regions. Growth is available but the requirements and experience needed doesn’t make sense for the pay. The value each employee has and recognition entirely depends on your manager, district manager, and the companies focus. The company has a lot of women in it, which is a good thing, but I have experienced women being favored for positions while not being the most qualified. When new growth opportunities are present they are given based on favoritism and who you know. Recently there has been nepotism, and employees value is based on time working and not production. The culture is strong and saved the rating, but I could not imagine a long term career that started here. Retail is isolated, poorly paid, but the most vital business component. Benefits are very good. Upper management could stand to be more transparent with the lower levels of the company.

I had anxiety attacks after working here. The management is horrible. They pick favorites and those people get the good hours and they look past their mistakes. If you aren't a favorite, they will give you horrible hours and ride you about every single mistake you make. 
  The hours were not great, although "bankers hours" are a thing of the past. We would have to work 6 days a week and still not get 40 hours. When we were open on Sundays, we would have to work 13 days in a row. In the Effingham location we had to move from branch to branch in town and I did not like that. You didn't get to know the customers because you we never in the same place. I felt like the bank looked at customers as a number and the employees a machine. They didn't really care about either one. 
  When they hire you, they promise you it will be easy to get promoted, but it most definitely is not. The men were promised promotions, and did indeed receive them, most of the women however did not.

A typical day at work begins with Agile standup meeting on webex. Our team works from a Trello board that has assigned tasks to each team member.  During the day we work on tasks, attend scheduled meetings and collaborate with other team members through microsoft teams, jabber and webex.  I am learning a great deal about the banking industry in general as well as the SAS business intelligence tool to produce analytic insights into the company's data.  Management does a great job of keeping us informed on how Midland's acquisitions, vision for the future and culture initiatives going forward.  Sometimes communication issues arise but I am a professional that will overcome and gain understanding.  I am an animated person when trying to explain issues that need clarification so I am learning to work with colleagues better. The best part of the job to me is providing a solution to the organization that gives better insight into daily business.

For the CCR1 position you’re paid terrible wages to deal with the rudest people that you’ll meet. You’ll get burned out quickly by the demands of being in customer care. You also get left in the dark a lot with customer care. No one else from other parts of the bank communicate with you effectively. So you can tell a customer one thing that should be accurate. But something could have changed with the branch or higher up. Which will make an irate customer more irate. The CCR2s above you and the managers of customer care do try and do their best and they are good people themselves. But Midland States Bank outside of a couple departments is a toxic work environment. They will also screw you over if you leave, get fired, or get laid off because of automation. By challenging any unemployment claims you make.

Midland cares a lot about having a positive, constructive culture and it shows. Your personal growth and development is a top priority and managers are incredibly supportive of your goals, both personal and professional. I've learned a lot about myself, my goals for the future, and my learning and working styles thanks to the Culture Training everyone goes through as a new employee. Transparency and honesty are valued from the top of the company all the way to the bottom and management leads by example by consistently providing transparent updates on the state of the company, infrastructure, etc. Successes are celebrated, no matter how small, and peer-to-peer appreciation is actively encouraged.The hardest part of the job is probably that the environment is fairly fast-paced. The pace isn't for everyone, but if you ever feel lost or confused about a project, all you have to do is ask for help. I love working at Midland States Bank!

A typical day at work includes funding loans for commercial or business accounts. You have to make sure you use your time efficiently to get your loans funded prior to 1:30 pm.  I've learned a lot about how loans work and how they are funded on the back end.  The workplace culture is relaxed and not crazy.  There are only about 10 of us here, you must be self motivated.  The hardest part of the job is the you are always learning something new, which to me, even though that is one of the harder aspects, I enjoy it because it provides a challenge for me.  I don't like ho-hum jobs, and this is not one of them.  The best part of the job is that I can work remotely from the corporate office so your boss is mainly on IM and email.  You can work remotely from home sometimes once you get the hang of it.  I like the fast pace-ness of it, but I revel in that type of thing.  I tend to get things done in a crunch, and I like a challenge.
