I have mixed feelings about my time at Miltenyi Biotec in San Jose. While the company once had a promising culture and potential, recent changes have left many employees feeling disillusioned and undervalued. Over the past year, there have been several rounds of layoffs that have significantly affected morale. Many employees are now tasked with the responsibilities of two or three people, all without any corresponding increase in pay or even recognition for the added workload.
The leadership at the San Jose site, specifically the site head and director level, seems to be struggling. There is a lack of clear direction, and many employees feel that the management team is either unaware or unable to address ongoing issues. The site head seems to be in over their head, which has contributed to a general sense of confusion and frustration among the staff. The absence of effective leadership has made it difficult to stay motivated or optimistic about the future of the site.
Additionally, there has been a noticeable turnover in directors, which has only added to the instability. We’ve seen top performers in many departments leave, and the overall quality of leadership is now a major concern. 


The upper management has developed a culture of ignoring problems then looking for scapegoats or finger pointing. 
Job description keeps changing on a whim, no processes in place therefore people are constantly overstepping or duplicating work. 
Some people are so desperate for career progression that they throw others under the bus for a change of title. Backstabbing prominent. 
Customer deadlines are hardly respected and met, contracts one-sided. 
The only enjoyable part of the job was meeting the customers and their projects. Internally, no is constantly the answer when innovation or creative problem solving is proposed. Learned the most from my customers. Learned very little from the inhouse. Germany based training. 
Worst company I've ever worked for. I feel sorry for the customers. 

The benefits package is excellent, the 401(k) match is generous, and the PTO policy is one of the strongest aspects of the company. Compensation and benefits are definitely highlights.

However, there are significant concerns within certain departments. There appears to be a lack of accountability, and inconsistent leadership standards create an uneven work environment. Clear career progression paths are not well defined, and employees are sometimes elevated without transparent criteria. Favoritism and inconsistent treatment can negatively impact morale, and in some cases, problematic behaviors are tolerated.

That said, experiences seem to vary by team. Some departments operate effectively and do not appear to face the same challenges, so your experience may depend heavily on where you land.

This company pays well. There are many intelligent individuals working and it is a big perk to be able to collaborate and learn from them. In the end it is all about your own vision on what is important and the balance of what you can change and what you can't. If you are not a passive bored individual, you will learn a great deal. This company can serve well in professional development if one is open to it. Unfortunately, there is little room for career advancement within the company, so people tend to seek advanced positioning outside when they gain knowledge and experience. One might think it is not exactly beneficial for the company, but again, it is all about different vision in the end. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Peers are good people. Managers not so much. Well funded R&D good benefits.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Abusive management, coordinating with people in Germany, invasive unacceptable vaccine mandates. Disregard for individual health rights. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Middle managers that don't know what they are doing but pretend they do, in a tyranical manner.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Too many people crammed into too tight a space, health risks ignored, unreasonable demands. Micromanagement. Impossible to be productive on site. Too many distractions and noise.

Management is intolerable. Stay away at all costs. There is no room for growth nor career path. Job descriptions are wrong. Management solicits opinions then shrugs when verbalizing serious problems. At best, they're irresponsible. At worst, they hide problems just because they do not want to work. Absolutely horrific morale and has only gotten worse since secret layoffs. They pay you lip service then talk badly about you to other coworkers.  They don't want you to work overtime and pass it off as we want you to have a work-life balance but in reality, they simply can't afford it because of their misuse of funds. 

Miltenyi is a top notch company with exceptional people. This was the best job I've ever had, and the only job I regret leaving. I would work there again at the drop of a hat. If you have a chance to join this organization, do not hesitate and rest assured you have scored the job of a lifetime. They treat their employees better than anywhere I've ever worked and their benefits cannot be matched.

I loved working for this company. The benefits are great (they are currently adding paid parental leave and typically do a 70-100% match on 401(k) contributions with no upward limit), and I received a bonus every year I worked here. Overall I found it to have a very relaxed and professional atmosphere with a good amount of flexibility. Mileage may vary based on department, but overall I would recommend this place.

Unappreciated and never acknowledged for inovation and suggestions that streamline and improve workflow. My ideas were adopted but presented as being derived from management out of Germany.  No credit ever given to the originator of the idea or improvement. I could go on but I really don't GAS.

Great work environment a lot of plus sides working here. The CS team is great everyone is so inviting and nice. There isn’t just 1 person out for themselves. Makes you feel like a family. The work can get to be alot in terms of memorizing all the specific duties but over all you stay busy.
