A typical day at work was very pleasant. The residents at Misericordia Home bring sunshine to each and everyday I work there simply because they had not a worry in the world. It was very hard to bring personal issues to work because as soon as I arrived I felt blessed to be the one who's making a positive difference in their everyday life. While working there I learned one important thing which was patience. The residents at Misericordia are mentally and physically challenged so I had to learn how to work at a pace that was much more convenient for them and that would make them much more comfortable getting through their everyday tasks. I cant speak for the entire company but I mainly worked in one building and management did not conduct themselves as I think a leadership team should. I personally feel as part of a leadership team you have to lead by example you have to show your team no one is bigger then the other and that we are all in this together to get our jobs done as precise and smoothly as possible. Those actions are not being taken place, everyone is for self only and that is not how you run a good business. Out of the three years working there I get along with my co-workers very well I am an excellent team player. The hardest part of my job would be the commute back and forth to work it's about two hours and the most enjoyable would be getting to interact with the residents on a day to day basis.

I worked at Mis for only ~90days, and I only left due to relocating. I got placed into the Marion Center as most people without experience will. I was very impressed with their training. They have classes/cohorts start a training session that lasts 4 weeks. By the 3rd week you are slowly getting your feet wet and meeting the residents. It can be very overwhelming, but really the work is manageable once you find your footing. Everyone I met- HR, supervisors,  QIDPs, DSPs, receptionists, and the trainers were especially accommodating and genuinely kind. The vice president and director make a really great team and it is so clear that they are invested in the Marion center as a whole ecosystem- EVS, DSPs, residents, families, etc. Its a lot to juggle but they have your back. I found this to be the least toxic working environment I have been a part of. Of course, short staffing is a pain, but this is a problem EVERYWHERE. My recommendations would be to decrease the amount of weekends required (3/month but you do get a $3/hr pay which is great), to change the shifts so the staffing overlaps to ensure everyone gets out on time and enough info can be relayed, and to make ordering supplies like certain foods and wipes easier as it was confusing who to contact for what and having to log into email. Employee recognition is strong and I felt very valued, but there are small tweaks to make things go smoother. The great thing is, your word is valued here! 

Typical day has some routine mixed with variety. It is not an easy job, and your thanks is usually in smiles from the residents, branded t-shirts, a meal here and there, decent benefits. Much can be learned here, and in their training they like to say that it always looks great on a resume. Some in management deeply care about the staff and residents they work for; and it shows in their ethics, in how they show up and are unafraid to get their hands dirty doing direct care, and the way they really listen to staff and residents as individuals, and work through problems as a team. You want to be on those teams! Many others are out of touch. They're promoted just for being there long enough, being related to someone important, or making things look good on the surface, while underneath there is callousness and pettiness with little regard or understanding of the day-to-day struggles and innovations of staff and residents. It's hard to be person-centered because of the structure and understaffing. Those are some challenges. The most enjoyable parts are the many individual residents who depend on you for their quality of life, the grateful families, the inspired volunteers, the engaged staff, and when teams work together to make things happen despite the odds. 

A typical day at work usually runs over the 8 hour shift as I have to be flexible in working with resident situations whether they are medical or behavior related. I supervise and manage a residence to a developmentally disabled population while also managing residence staff in my area. I am the direct supervisor to my staff in any situation that I am on campus. I also handle twelve resident caseloads (monitoring annual goals, coordinating medical related appointments and updates with nursing and doctors, creating and implementing behavioral and independent support programs, assessing residents annually in areas of economics, safety, environment, etc, while coordinating with specialists, my director and parents to make sure residents are progressing daily). Days are usually very fast-paced, however, my organizational and planning skills really allow me to be efficient and finish jobs/assignments quickly and on time. The hardest part of the job is balancing paperwork with resident involvement, however, resident involvement is most important; catching up on paperwork is not a challenge. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with open-minded professionals and easy-going people and parents. 

I worked all three shifts for two years. The morning shift crew gets treated better and very cliquey. You have to work in groups and all lifts require two people. Working with the same people everyday can be annoying because not everyone is nice and will sabotage your work. We’re always out of linen and essentials. The nurses can be very micromanaging especially on Mcauley Purple Team. It gets to be Monotonous and tedious work. For example the managers let the kids drool all over themselves without bibs because they don’t like the look of the bibs or they think the kid will choke......they provide the bibs for use but will take them off at will and if the kids gets too wet you have to constantly change their clothes and lift them in and out of the bed. The nurses give suppositories which which the kids deficate ALL DAY! The way you have to care for the kids is not efficient. The rules and management is overbearing. Always short staffed on evenings. You only get one weekend off a month! Even though it’s 4 people to care for you’ll be working like you have 13. 

Typical day at work varies depending on your position. There are so many different positions available at MIS, but my requires a lot of paperwork and hands on with the residents.
I have learned so much at Misericordia, especially about the special needs population, and absolutely have found my dream job. The residents make your day!
Management also varies by area. I personally love my management team, and feel like you get out of this job, what you put in.
Hardest part of the job, is when you lose a resident, or have  to deal with upset families.
Most enjoyable part of the day is seeing the residents, and knowing I am helping them to live their best lives. I also enjoy working with my coworkers -they make the day go by fast, and are always good company. We all work hard together, and that is so important

Overall Misericordia is an excellent work environment. They have great benefits and its a wonderful place where you can evolve in your career. A typical day at work would include me helping residents with there everyday activities to help their day run smoothly. I Have learn the importance of life and how much value it has working here just based off spending time with the residents that reside their and how appreciative they are of life. Misericordia is a home for the mentally disabled and to work there you have to have a humble heart. Management for the most part is very fair I have no complaints but I believe that there is always room for improvement. The hardest part of my job is losing a resident, when a resident has passed that is very difficult for me to handle simply because I have grown very attached to everyone that I work with. The most enjoyable part of my job would be working here you always will have a smile on your face, no matter what kind of day your having they will find a way to brighten up your day.

I'm responsible for the well being of 21 special needs residents. I provide gastric feedings , pass medications, provide trach care. I multitask very well because during med pass I have to connect gtubes for the enteral feedings and also draw blood if labs are ordered. Once blood is drawn I have to process the specimen ie put in spinner for 15 min. withdraw serum from tube . Print labels and req. forms and take to receptionist so Quest can pick it up all while monitoring residents feedings and whatever else. I also supervise 5 Cna's. I have learned time management and have improved significantly on my multitasking skills. The hardest part of the job is when a resident makes a transition and I know that me and co-workers did everything within our power to save that resident. The most enjoyable  part of the job is when my shift is over and all the residents are alive and well. No seizures , no fevers, no sending residents out 911. I get to go home ...just to come back the next day and do it all over again !!

For some odd reason, the overnight shift is responsible for most of the cleaning of the home, even though there are housekeepers on the PM and AM shifts. Anything that is dropped on the floor is left on the floor for the overnight staff to clean. I have learned to never trust coworkers or management ever again. The management at Misericordia is a group of the most incompetent, clueless, nitpicking individuals I have ever seen. Epic fail. The hardest part of the job is having to constantly cover my butt so I don’t get snitched on by my coworkers or other shifts. The most enjoyable part of the job is the residents. Not all, but most of them. As far as workplace culture, it belongs in a Petri dish. 

Overall, I enjoyed my many years at Misericordia.  Working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities has changed my life forever.  Misericordia has extremely high standards of care and genuinely tries to give each resident the highest quality of life possible for as long as they choose to live there.  I made some lifelong friends while working there and my peer community has always been very supportive.  My professional development was encouraged, however I saw some peers struggle to advance despite having the highest qualifications.  Misericordia recently started putting everyone through a supportive workplace culture training, which I hope reaches to the top of the organization. It is a fairly traditionally-minded Catholic non-profit, which can make people who do not share that lifestyle feel uncomfortable at times.
