A job that allowed for outside of the box style thinking to advance/improve the overall care for elders. A typical work day ranged from training all the facility staff in sensory integration, evaluating an elder who had cognitive challenges that required special programming, to teaching a highschool class I created for one of the facilities. I learned how to juggle several big projects at the same time, helping re-train staff to help them function at their best during their job, communicate with a variety of people, train a variety of staff in regards to people's cognitive functioning, and educate the public by speaking for marketing in several different venues.  The hardest part of the job was learning the details of the regulations in comparison to rehabilitation which was my previous employment. The most enjoyable part of the job, was engaging with the elders, seeing their enjoyment of a new program. In addition, being given opportunity to think outside of the box to try new programming or trainings.

Forest Hills has a very approachable management team, from the administrator toe CCC's.  I have worked other places and I can honestly say this is a fantastic team. Open door policy for DON and CCC's. Our administrator is on the floor a lot. She makes a point to interact with staff in a positive way. We are a all private room facility. The acuity level of residents is pretty low. I would sat that many of our staff do not realize how good they have it here.  If you want to work for a place that management cares about staff as much as the residents, a place where management helps staff when needed. Then apply to Forest Hills.  No place is perfect, and you should never expect it to be. That is unrealistic. But the Forest is trying to be it's best and "do the right thing".  It's worth it  to see what the Forest is about. I am just a floor nurse and this is my real review!

Let me preface this by saying the only part I loved about my job was the people I worked with every single day in the facility. This company is going through tremendous financial issues, electric companies are showing up to shut off the power, trash is not being picked up because they aren’t paying the bills. They are cutting everyone’s bonuses in half or getting rid of them completely. They have a hiring freeze going on because they literally cannot afford to hire people other than nurses and CNA’s. Please take the time out of your day and read the reviews on indeed, because all of them are correct when they say this company has very poor management in place, lack of structure, overall, and the worst financial issues I have ever seen. This company should really be ashamed of themselves for the way they treat their employees with absolutely zero communication and issues that are going on that affect them as workers.

Honestly, I didn't really learn a lot here.  It seems to be a dead end job.  Communication is lacking, bills don't get paid on time, so things can not be fixed or serviced properly, and budget is so low, nothing can be done to better the facility besides the wonderful people that make it happen out of their own heart, pockets, and ability.  I really feel bad for the residents that live here because they are not receiving the optimal care that they deserve.  Our facility had lost almost half of our residents with no permanent gain in the 15 months that I gave this company a chance.  Sad to see monthly rents increase while no real efforts are made to increase the quality of living  for residents whom are supposed to be our main focus... 

Lack of supplies to properly care for the residents. Washcloths & towels are a luxury if you get 10 of each for a shift. They refuse to purchase wipes for incontinent clean up. Find ourselves using pillowcases, sheets, ect to clean them up. 
Administrator is very condescending to employees. Major favoritism also. Very few actual employees. Pretty much agency staffed who seems to show up if they want to and leave whenever they want. No accountability for them either. If you are a staff employee, you worry every day if you will get out on time or at all. Being an agency nurse has its bonuses. They are so desperate for workers they overlook a lot.  
Fast paced. Would be nice to have more free time from meds to be able to give more personal care to the residents. 
Seem to be only concerned about staying one step ahead of State. 
Training is pretty much self taught by asking other nurses how to do something in the charting. 

My day would begin with checking who needed to be seen that day or what issues needed to be attended to.  I would then work to see all the patients as available, returning to their rooms as needed.  I would preform MINI Mental's, PHQ-9's and other tests as the need presented.  I would spend time with patients as needed, help resolve issues if possible or help family members with find the information they might need.  I would then make sure I did all of my documentation before I left for the day.

I learned much more about working with those who are dealing with Dementia and Alzheimer's and the different forms.  The staff worked well together to make sure and provide the best care possible to the patients.

The hardest pat of this or any Social Work job is going to always be paperwork.  But the joy of working with the patients and their families is what makes it all worth it.

So, the interview was my first red flag- no behavioral questions were asked. The facility/role was described to me and I was told "if there is a fall, never document cna's were sitting in the dining room". High turnover, micromanaging from above while not being provided the tools needed by them, supply issues, short orientation. Frequent issues with understaffing without any compensation or even acknowledgement of staff going above and beyond for the residents. I was told once "don't answer call lights too fast or the patients will expect it" what?!? The overall culture is very negative, with a lot of staff and resident dissatisfaction. The pay was good, but overall the compensation wasn't good enough for the expectations.


This organization is solely interested in it's bottom dollar. It has a  total disregard for staff safety and work-life balance.  It is the expectation that hourly staff work well over their scheduled hours  and make short/long term adjustments in their schedules to accommodate staffing holes and that salaried clinical staff work  long hours to also fill staffing holes with maybe an hourly wage compensation benefit (or time off if you can find the time - which doesn't happen). Fill the beds at all cost. Regardless of staff exhaustion or morale. PTO is accrued at a snails pace and when you do decide to leave you aren't allowed to cash it out. First organization that I've ever been at that has this policy. Couple that with a mediocre at best benefit package that is expensive and the recipe for high turnover exists.

It was a packed day with a to big to do list expected to complete without support. If In management you don't get support or training needed to do job successfully.  I was incredibly disappointed. It had flexibility but on their terms. Don't get sick cause you will loose PTO.  Also read your handbook. They change job vs what they tell you in interview. A month after working the position they told me I had and this told I wouldn't be doing I was now required to do. If you have any experience make sure you get training per there policy and procedures. I asked for training multiple times and never got it and was let go due to that.

Lack of equipment, supplies are the reasons I had to leave this company.  They cannot even provide enough computers for documentation, so I don't know how they expect for employees to actually do the job when there is nothing to use to perform the job.  I came to work one day and there was no computer in the nursing cart.   I tried borrowing from another department and they only have 2 working computers.  They have a full staff, too!  
Soap for patients to use is like gold.  It's rare to see one.  Sometimes I hear co-workers going to different departments to look for disinfectant wipes or sprays.  They have a number of good employees and very nice patients, but I feel like the company doesn't fully realize that.  It's sad.
