Worked as a QC inspector, Phoenix AZ,  mission critical data center, the lone QC inspector for the majority of my time on site. The management is green, and secretive, and the lines of communication are strained  because of an adversarial relationship existing between QC and the Superintendent/PM that was carried over into this project from the last job in Virginia that resulted in large amounts of  rework and a very difficult commissioning process at that site. 

The Phoenix site is poorly led and the general morale of the men in the field is extremely low and turnover is extremely high, with new workers given virtually zero training, most unable to operate the most basic of tools in the field, and lacking basic hand tools. Multiple field leads, foreman, cycled in and out due to frustration with management in particular the Electrical Superintendent.

 A very choppy, semi cold  working relationship is the experience I had with MMR, in which my knowledge, expertise, and experience were completely ignored. I decided to stay long enough to put 20k in the bank then left to take a Quality Control Superintendent assignment for a major renewable energy company.  I enjoy leading people and creating positive learning culture at my job sites and I was disappointed with the entire process during my time at MMR.

  I'd like to say that this is an experience at only one site by one person with one crew. MMR is a large company and I do know other parts of it that are quite capable and respected with well functioning job sites. It's very hard to staff and lead major projects and often unqualified or inexperience people are slotted into positions such as Electrical Superintendent and Project Manager out of pure necessity and I believe that's what was occuring at the Phoenix site. 

Depending on your skills and qualifications you could end up at those other parts of the company and have a very good employment opportunity. However if you are a QA/QC inspector professional it's likely you will face a contentious and unnecessarily difficult working relationship with management. The pay is only average and benefits are mediocre with the company not paying 100% as my new company does. 




In a day at work I would pull, dress-up cables, try wrap cables, glanding, run conduit, install cable and channel tray, drilling and knock out holes using electrical and hand tools. Glanding okonite and marine cable. I'm also experience with AC and DC currents. I'm familiar with the use of electrical testers such as megger, volt meter and tracing cables from point to point. I'm also able to read prints for construction purposes, LOTO procedures. I learned to beat my fear of heights and of water. The management were really nice and understandable. They gave us enough time to finish the productive project. They gave us time so we could give them the project they wanted, they wanted a productive and well done project. They were understandable with all the workers. My co-workers were all nice and we were there for each other, we helped each other with the tools. We were there to support each other. The hardest part of the job was the pull the big cables (535). Terminator, when I had to connect all the cables.

MMR can be a great place to work but it all depends on who you work for, your district and personal factors such as gender, race, and how close you are with key people.  Certain projects require continuous overtime (12+ hrs per day) with little time off, which isn't easy on family life. If you happen to have a great project manager then it can make it worth it but there are supervisors, managers, and office staff who have the job because of who they know and not because they are qualified or deserving. However, if you work hard and smart enough, you still might be able to move up but only if someone higher up notices. Staff on most projects seem to be fairly close and like family with various events and get togethers outside of work.

Each day started out with a safety meeting, planned and scheduled the task for multiple craftsman and foreman, filled out a JSA and identified job hazards. Check-out of control loops, calibrations of instruments and devices.

I learned that safety and communication make for a productive day.
A positive attitude and a encouraging supervisor make a enjoyable work environment. Trouble shooting skills on instruments and devices.

The management team provided the team with the loop folders, materials, drawings, prints, techincal equipment, safety equipment, and leadership skills.

Trouble shooting problem loops, faulty equipment, engineering issues, and meeting deadlines.

Singing loop sheets, start-up and commissioning of equipment. Turning the equipment over to the client.

Great work locations, horrible supervisor that would rather have you Google how to do anything rather spend the time to show the right way to do anything your unfamiliar with. No Pto and the people that don’t need it get company work trucks. They are cheap, if you mess up anything the supervisors throw a temper tantrum and punch their trucks and throw stuff across the room. No one should have to come to work to be treated in this manner. The best day was the day I did not have to return. Low voltage in house is a department yet treated like a contractor rather part of the company. They promise a review and a raise after 6 months and even after reminded, will not deliver. Raises are non existent.

A typical starts off with a safety meeting and an overview that days work. And continues with an expectation of hard work and quality work performance.

I learned how to work hard and be efficient.

Management focused on the most important tasks for that day and saw to it that it was accomplished.

Culture is typical to that of construction work. It is a fun and often light hearted environment.

The hardest part of the job was inconsistent hours, which was often due to the specific job we were doing at the time.

With a focus on safety and good performance, this was a fun place to work and grow as an employee. I enjoyed being a part of a crew that focused on that. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The pay was very good for the area.  The direct supervision was good.  The job was explained well.  The interface with other work groups was not very good. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not knowing who to talk to about issues both work related and personal.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is easy going until the schedule slips.  The company is laid back most of the time.  Pay was easy to set up.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get you job assignment from the foreman.  Go to the field.  Locate the equipment contact the control room.  Trouble shoot the issues.  Contact the foreman for next assignment.

Where do I start? Management was terrible and because of this the employees stopped caring! Managers driving company trucks out to bars, getting trashed and then laughing about it. There's an old saying that a company is as strong as its weakest link so when the weakest is at the top you can count on employees not giving as much as hoped for. If you are part of the drinking crew or you came from the same state then you were in good standing with the management. I actually had a guy tell me that its not what you know but who you know. This guy was only 23 and had been with the company for 5 years. I wonder just how much about installation he actually does know?

. I have learned the use some power tools and the aerial or man  lift, how to work in a construction site, safety requirements and more.
. The Management was involve with the employees and the project.
. The team work makes everything much easier and faster to finished and learn. Good co workers willing to work, help and teach.
. The hardest part of the job was the  weather, having to work in extreme weather conditions.
. The most enjoyable part of the job is a well done job, to see that I had part in a construction that will last for may years.
