Excellent work/life balance!  35 hour work week (unless in IT, then the job demands can extend past these hours for programmers).

Below Director level one is required to be in the Union and approximately 3% of gross salary goes towards Union.  5% if one chooses to be a full-fledged member.  Thanks to the Union you get top of the line health insurance and 20-22 days vacation plus 12 sick days (don't quote me because this can always change).

Expansion: The University has built/is building 3 new buildings, which will open in Fall 2015.  And there are talks of adding 2 additional new buildings.  The campus is beautiful!

US News ranking is fair.

The University is taking many steps to increase applications.  They have eliminated the requirement of SAT's citing that the statistics show that a student's gpa is a better predictor of a student's performance and success than SAT's.  

They are also in the process of opening to the common application.

On the technology front they are in the process of implementing an unprecedented best-of-breed Enterprise wide application upgrade.  This is causing many changes and a lot of uprooting, but after the transition period it will be even better.  New skill sets accross the pillars of the University are now in demand, so keep your eyes open for Peoplesoft Finance positions and IT, Workday Human Resources and IT, and Banner (and others) for Campus Life and Student services.

Each shift was 4 hours long. You were given a walkie talkie to communicate with other coworkers during shift. Each shift consisted of cleaning, refilling towel racks, ensuring patrons were following all facility policies and procedures, and rotating between the different fitness areas in the massive facility. I learned how to work as a team and how to communicate with multiple people when issues occurred.
Management there was well structured and allowed for a great sense of camaraderie throughout each semester. The workplace culture was that of a family, everyone knew each other and knew how to have fun and get work done at the same time. The hardest part of the job was leaving. I had graduated and only had the chance to work at the Student Rec Center one year. It was hard leaving all of the wonderful people behind, knowing I wouldn't be seeing many of them after graduation.
The most enjoyable part of the job was the relationships built and memories made. There was a party after training week in the beginning of the year, and at the end of the semester for graduating seniors. It is truly amazing what they do over at MSU's Campus Recreation. I worked for an organization through the Rec Center called Outdoor Adventure and was a tour guide. We went on several hikes and also made a trip up to Lake Placid for their annual Adirondack Winter Variety trip, which included snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ice skating. 
Overall amazing experience and I met a lot of incredible people.


As a laboratory research assistant at Montclair State University, I had the privilege to contribute to groundbreaking research projects that pushed the boundaries of scientific discovery. Working alongside esteemed faculty members and fellow researchers, I gained invaluable hands-on experience in experimental design, data collection, and analysis. The collaborative environment fostered a culture of innovation and intellectual curiosity, where every day presented new challenges and opportunities for growth. My role involved conducting experiments, troubleshooting issues, and presenting findings at departmental meetings and conferences. The mentorship and guidance I received from experienced researchers enhanced my technical skills and critical thinking abilities, preparing me for future endeavors in the field of biomedical sciences. I am grateful for the meaningful work I was able to contribute to and the supportive community that encouraged my professional development. Working at Montclair State University as a laboratory research assistant has been an enriching and fulfilling experience that has shaped my academic and career journey.

Working at Montclair State University provides experience in a large, fast-paced higher education environment that emphasizes collaboration, service, and adaptability. Day-to-day responsibilities often involve managing competing priorities, coordinating across departments, and responding to high volumes of requests, particularly during peak academic periods. The role offers meaningful opportunities to build organizational, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while supporting a diverse campus community.

At the same time, the work environment can present challenges common to large institutions, including shifting priorities, evolving processes, and periods of heavy workload that require sustained multitasking. Decision-making and communication can sometimes feel slowed by institutional structure, and balancing operational demands with available resources can be difficult during busy cycles. Overall, the experience is valuable for developing resilience, professionalism, and systems-navigation skills, though success often requires patience, flexibility, and strong personal time-management strategies.


I worked at Montclair State from 1992 through 1994. During the summers of 1995 through 2002, I also taught there. In the fall of 2002, I returned to teaching there throughout the year as well. The atmosphere is collaborative in terms of sharing ideas in addition to team teaching. However, I have a great deal of autonomy in certain areas, such as the TOEFL Review course that I teach. It is fascinating to teach both students who are new immigrants and need assistance in becoming acculturated to life in the U.S. as well as teaching students who are preparing for academic work in English, Moreover, I enjoy learning about a diverse variety of cultures and working with a varying age range of students. The various courses that I teach are so satisfying because I continually seek ways to improve upon my methods and content based on what works best. I also enjoy mentoring student teachers, which is always quite insightful for me and keeps me on my toes.

In a typical work day a lot of responsibility is put on you, but since you can make your own hours it is flexable. You will clean the studio, sweep, mop and occasionally spray down the floor with a hose. The studio assistants will rotate on who cleans the sinks and clay traps or we work together, they tend to need once a week cleans or they smell. Keeping a clean studio is a must and will take a lot out of your time.

Then there is making clay a few times a week depending on what they classes are doing, coordinating with professors is helpful. This can also be a time consuming job at first. You will also be loading kilns, grinding shelves, moving materials and helping out students who have questions. 

Things tend not to go as planned in the studio, so be prepared for quick thinking and problemsolving.

A typical day at work is never predictable. This job entitles you to be social and to learn how to live and lead within an adaptive environment that a college campus can be. This work environment has taught me how to deal with dealing with different types of scenarios, protocols, and crisis management. As in my office position, it gave me experience on how to work with students and staff members different form my original role as a Resident Assistant. 
   The hardest part of the job was learning how to balance priorities. Being a student leader meant balancing a full time student life, a professional life, and always prioritizing mental health status for yourself and your coworkers. The most enjoyable part of my job is probably the lasting effects. Seeing how residents and previous students keep in touch with you, and share how they've really progressed with your help is everlasting to hear.

Montclair State University provides excellent jobs for student workers. They offer many opportunities to broaden your horizons, to learn more about your field of study, and to meet people in that field. The work can be demanding at times but not at all overwhelming.
A typical day at work for me in my department is filing, faxing, delivering mail, running errands, scanning documents, basic secretarial work. I had the opportunity to be the Assistant Coordinator at Career Night, which was a great learning experience for me. I was able to meet many successful alumni who graduated with the same major I have now. It was very educational for me, and I enjoyed it very much. My co-workers are amazing. They are very calm and polite. The most enjoyable part of my job is being around people who have a love for the same subjects I do.

A typical day at work would consist of answering phone calls, interacting with disabled students, providing a comfortable area for the students to discuss certain matters pertaining to school or outside school issues. 
I've learned the essence if confidentiality and how crucial it is to withhold information for certain issues. I've also learned to work in another environment with different people than my previous employment. 
The hardest part of the day there really is none. If a bunch of students come in at once and all need different accommodations than it can get a little hectic but with my team things for the most part run smoothly.
The most enjoyable part of the day is when my director comes in and greets everyone and asks everyone how they are doing and if we need her she's an office away.

When I get to work in the mornings, I spend the first few minutes planning my day, I first of all follow up on matteres that required further follow up and then I begin my research for the day. I handle different projects and pending on how big they are I break them into phases and address them on an hourly basis. I take my lunch most times around 2/3pm. Attend to students needs from 4pm-5:15pm and then round up for the day. If it were a school day I will head to my class and if not I will head home by 7pm.

The most enjoyable part of the Job is being able to accomplish your set task for the day and more importantly add value to the students and department as a whole.

There is hardly a worst part of my day. Its generally smooth, unless you have to liaise with other departments that might stall on that particular project, therefor affecting timelines.
