Mount Carmel Behavioral Health

You should work here if you like making it up as you go along and flying by the seat of your pants. There is no direction or assistance from management. Staff are left with little to no resources to do multiple jobs at once and management offers no solution. Staff are expected to work under unsafe conditions with patients they are not equipped to care for and it leads to harm to both patients and staff. A typical day is showing up to work with some hope of a decent day only to find out not even half the staff showed up because of schedule mistakes or just not wanting to. Then you often go to the floor as one of the few staff to also find out that there are very violent patients on the floor who require a higher level of care but they were accepted anyway with no way of controlling violent behaviors and no staff to assist when they act out. Admissions are brought in one after the other even without staff to admit them or care for them once they are admitted. Patients are going days at a time without being seen by a doctor or being put on medications. Kitchen staff harass the floor staff as well as the patients and nothing is done about it. There hasn't been anyone available to make repairs and one of the nurses station has, for months, been missing the entire glass wall there that is meant to protect staff. There hasn't been social workers available most weekends for discharges and no kitchen staff to provide the patients with dinner. Patients are fed the same food and not given options despite having various medical conditions that require alternative meals.  I have never worked in such a place of lawlessness and disregard for ethical treatment. I hope for the sake of the patients that this place is closed and revamped before subjecting any other victims to poor treatment. 

MCBH say they are patient oriented and make it sound like they do wonderful things. They do not, it's all marketing lies. They are all about the money, that's it. And that way of thinking starts at the top. The CEO is terrible. CEO doesn't listen to what problems are brought forth, insists that whatever issue is going on isn't actually happening, makes excuses and will not fully staff any areas. Higher ups seem more concerned with the amount of printer ink being used, rather than any major legitimate problem. Most employees are highly stressed a majority of the time. As a result of CEO, CFO, etc poor decisions and poor communications, processes are not correctly followed, issues never get appropriately addressed by the right people and patient care and employee safety is scary at times. Pretty sure there all kinds of violations going on that could shut this place down. There are people in positions they are not qualified for just to move a body around, rather than hire the right person for the right job. Hard workers are not rewarded, knowledgable employees are not rewarded, but stepped on and treated like dirt. 

Mount Carmel Behavioral Health is by far the worst job that I have ever had. Long working hours, endless paperwork and poor patient care. This is not the place you want to work if you have any compassion for the mentally ill. It is clear that money supercedes all else, including the ethical care of patients. Individual therapy isn't really available for those who desperately need it. Constant short staffing, yet there is an emphasis on cutting hours to reduce the expenditure of paying for labor. Horrible work life balance due to the fact that the work never really feels done. Inefficient processes made worse by paper charting. Some unprofessional and rude staff. No support from higher level management (CEO, CFO, etc.). Extremely high turnover of employees because of the aforementioned. I would not recommend this place to anyone- patient or potential employee. One of the few benefits are that schedules are pretty flexible because they can't afford to lose anymore employees. There are also some really great coworkers who work on the units (excluding upper management).

Please know before applying, you will indeed make great money. However, you will be overworked for this pay. Breaks are not given to the techs. There are high standards set but they are inconsistent. You are left to work alone in dangerous environments. The turnover rates are extremely high. You are poorly trained and expected to know things you weren’t trained on. I’m hopeful our new educator will help at least make a change in that area. This place has a whole lot of work to do to improve the conditions I have seen here. I have never worked for a place that ive felt cared so very little about me and my safety. Be mindful. There are always other options. 

The issue is it is poorly led by an incompetent Administration.  It's a basic concept,  treat others the way you want to be treated. However, this Administration values no one.  They allow poor care to the patients while pretending to be a service to the Mental Health community. They allow techs to verbally abuse patients, that is when the techs aren't sleeping on the job. . They allow chemically dependent nurses to work and overlook narcotic discrepancies

What is the best part of working at the company?
The employees, great group of people, most of which work as a team and you have some that slack off.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The patient's off course. It's PSYCH!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Company culture is ALL about saving money. They feed the patient's cheap food and don't have very many activities for them.

What do you value in an employer? If providing therapeutic services, being appreciated, treated fairly, having realistic expectations, and reasonable accommodations is on your list, I would continue your search. The bottom line is what truly matters to this company. When concerns are expressed, you will be told that it is a “misconception,” and nothing will be addressed, improved, or changed. This company is not beneficial or therapeutic for patients or employees.

The hospital is going through a cultural shift.  The current Leadership is truly making some changes for the better. I see this evidenced by a high turnover rate from many alumni. As new processes are established, many of the alumni staff are leaving. The obvious, " out with the old, in with the new" scenario. Great things are happening here!

The high turnover rate creates added anxiety and stress. A lack of quality leadership adds to the distress of employees who actually care about patients. Low staff-to-patient ratios create safety concerns for staff and patients. But if you are not new to behavioral health, you realize that this is the majority of behavioral health hospitals. The system is flawed, but there are workers who genuinely care.  

This company isn't patient oriented. They are money oriented. They treat their patients as if they're prisoners. The structure is horrible. Upper management doesn't listen and doesn't work with staff, they are Monday-Friday only and dont care who they screw in the process as well long as they can clock off by 5/6pm Friday. No time off, overworked and not compensated for the hard work that is put in
