Years ago, when I started for this company, it was the place to work!  Competitive pay, staff engagement, open communication with leadership, everything you could ever ask for.  I’m really not sure why things changed, but about 2 years ago everything started going downhill fast.  It’s very sad to see where we are as an organization now.  

Pay is far below competition, in fact non-licensed staff has recently been given significant raises (good thing!) however nurses were given nothing.  Therefore, the pay gap has been dramatically narrowed.  Considering every single thing that happens with a patient is on the shoulders of the nurse & all responsibility lies with the nurse, this is a complete slap in the face.  

They have also eliminated much needed positions such as a phlebotomy.   The nurse is now responsible not only for typical duties, babysitting PCAs, constantly attempting to hold physicians accountable, half of the time providing primary care, NEVER ever having a chance to take a lunch, or a single break for that matter, but on top of all of that and then more, we are responsible for drawing our own labs.  Plus charge nurses have ALL of the above responsibilities, including carrying a full team of patients of their own, but also completing/maintaining an entire other job description (charge), and leadership still expects them to somehow find time to attend 3 meetings throughout the day. Leaving not only their coworkers without a charge nurse, but leaving 5 to 6 patients without their nurse period!  The patients of the charge RN are often times completely neglected and left on their own  Not to any fault of the charge, but an entire culture of NOT putting the patient first.  

Benefits change almost yearly.  With each new year seeing the employee out of pocket costs raise, while benefits themselves decrease and become less and less competitive.  Oh and cleanliness, if you lift a mattress or examine the bars & rails of any single bed you are guaranteed to find blood, stool, or both.  When I have looked myself, there hasn’t been a single time I wasn’t able to find this.  Absolutely disgusting and infection control is completely non-existent.  I could go on and on.  My heart breaks at what this organization has become.

The actual work was okay. Fairly predictable, good technical support for the inevitable breakdowns that came with a remote position. Management was aloof but my coordinators, with whom I interacted more than I did with management, were generally friendly and helpful. There were some times when they were extremely slow to respond when I needed help with an issue, which was frustrating. 

One thing that was both a highlight and frustrating at the same time: the ability to earn PTO (paid time off) was robust--I earned nearly a full day off with every paycheck. But on the other side of the coin, actually getting permission to *use* that abundance of vacation time was like pulling teeth. Management had a policy that no more than one person per workgroup could take a specific day off, so good luck getting any time off whatsoever around the holidays. Also, we weren't given Black Friday off, which was bull. 

The workplace culture never sat right with me. They expected everything from us without ever giving anything in return. We were expected to be utterly gung-ho and rah-rah about the company at all times, but receiving any kind of positive reinforcement or feedback was virtually unheard of. I always did well on my performance reviews, but the rest of the year, the only time I would ever hear from coordinators or management was if I had made a mistake, or if they wanted something from me. There were never any notes or emails of recognition, kudos, or support--it very much felt like being an unnoticed, unappreciated cog in the machine. It's difficult to feel like you're making a difference or that your job matters at all in an environment like that. 

Then, of course, comes the biggest downside: pay. It was below average for the industry, and raises were laughably small. When I eventually left for a company that offered better compensation, Mount Carmel acted gobsmacked that I was moving on, and formally requested that I stay. But when I asked them if they would match or exceed the offer from the other company, they refused. Pretty telling. They want your labor and expertise, but they don't want to give you what you're worth in exchange. 

I worked as an MST for about a year. My day at work really depended on who was staffed and how well staffed we were that night. Sometimes it was great and sometimes it would be a waking nightmare. For all the PTSD that job gave me it also gave me a good basis in basic patient care. Management was ok, they would say all the right things and pretend to do things behind the scenes, but nothing would ever happen. There were three people that I could guarantee to have a terrible shift with. One of them was my preceptor and I nearly quit the third day of my orientation. The other two were nurses that never answered call lights and would refuse to do anything for their patients besides the bare minimum. Other than those three I worked with some truly amazing nurses and MST’s. It was a very challenging job and if you’re not someone willing to do hard work you won’t last long. I think the part I liked most about the job was my patients. Not all of them were the nicest, but for the most part they appreciated all that we did to take care of them. I really enjoyed getting to know the patients. It’s definitely hit or miss. If you want to work as an MST then I definitely recommend working in their ER. Its pretty simple work and you work with some pretty great nurses!

The  location was close to home, in my community.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of leadership with no accountability. Leadership at the highest level turns a blind eye to formal complaints regarding short staffing and toxic/abusive culture from direct management. This system puts profits over patient and staff safety. Daily risk to your license.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic and abusive. Direct management (unit charges and managers) is allowed to gossip and spread hate about employees daily. They discourage and threaten to use the “OH is an at-will state” when you speak out against managements bullying/abuse, patient safety issues, and short staffing. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No friendlies or human acknowledgement from managers unless being told to stay late again and asjed to pick up another short staffed day. You will listen to management walk around all day gossiping and spreading hate about nurses/techs/EVS/kitchen staff, patients, their families, doctors, anesthesia providers…no one is safe from this toxic mean-girl culture.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The patients/clients, they are the reason I lasted as long as I did.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Terrible management! I hated the management, everyone I work with did. Everyone has quit, it's been a revolving door because of how badly you are treated! If you like to be treated well or even with respect do not work for Mount Carmel Occupation Health!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Awful, about everyone I knew working there reported the management (same 2 people) to HR for the same issues and nothing was done. Management wouldn't allow people to take their vacation or sick leave. They would lie and tell them they were allow certain things. They overloaded you with work, half the time you never even got a lunch break, and they would still yell at you for all the things they think you should be doing. They also micromanage you even when they have no idea what your job is or how to do it. They are constantly in breach of contract. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A nightmare! Too much work, no breaks, no support, and very little pay.

I worked the 7am-7pm shift.  The day began with receiving patient reports, obtaining vital signs and assisting patients with toiletry.  Then we would deliver breakfast trays and assist with feeding if necessary, and help patients with bathing and bed changing. Also was responsible for Q2 turns, blood sugar checks, and assisting with admitting and discharging patients. We would also deliver lunch and dinner trays and help with feeds, and ambulate patients.  We did a lot; I was constantly on my feet.  Honestly, I loved my job, I found helping people to be real rewarding.  Being able to make my patients comfortable, safe, and to nurture them back to health is the most rewarding thing I've ever done in the work field.  However, because the staff shortage, the lack of team work, trust and respect between co-workers it made it impossible to provide adequate care for my patients.  Sometimes I would get a 400lb patient who needs to be turned every 2 hours to prevent bed sores and promote blood circulation, but it's impossible to do when none of your coworkers want to help.

Clock in; check the buildings, operation logs on computer see if there were any alarms active and correct if necessary. Get boilers ready for inspection, checking on chillers and cooling towers. Work on my list of PM's examples are change filters,  belts, motors on exhaust fans. I also helped on other hospital problem's tv's, doors, beds, stopped up sinks etc. I met with contractors to check on their job's being done through the hospital.  Walk every air handler room check for leaks and cleanliness. Help out in other department's if needed. A good part was seeing old friends and old co worker's I like to work with and  I am old school, I take pride in my job performance and respect everyone. I am always on time and never late. My pet peeve people with drama.  The most enjoyable part of a job is to know you are respected by your coworkers and your boss for a job well done....

I worked as a Telemetry Technician there and management was absolutely horrible. They told us from the gate that this was not a career, there is no room for advancements and you don't get raises outside of the tax increase. Wage is all over the board depending on "experience" but it's still below the average telemetry tech salary. The turnover rate is worse than a call center. Some of the other techs are very catty, petty and immature. You can't transfer within the company until after a year in your current position. You can't transfer ever if you have a write up for anything. You can get wrote up for anything! Being even 1 minute late is considered an absence whether you come in or not. Policies suck! They will hire just about anyone so if you need a quick job, apply but don't plan to stay.

I worked in the Corporate Services Center in an analytical capacity. There are fantastic people there, although the management is lackluster. This was a job for someone who was ready to coast in their career (not me). Absolutely no career advancement or development opportunity. On the positive side, my management was very understanding and flexible when things came up. 
Things at the director level are extremely cliquey. They are kind of like the "cool" kids who actually know what's going on, while the others just fly in the dark and do what they are told (this can be hard to work from from an analytical perspective). Communication was a struggle (this was probably more for my specific manager.) He wasn't a bad manager, but leadership did not come naturally to him. Overall a decent job, albeit a somewhat frustrating 2 years of my life.

Everything you may have seen in the news about this place only scratches the surface. For the security department, its managers have publicly and blatantly stated they "don't care" about their department. My interview process was non-existent. They read my resume, asked no questions, and I had the job offer on the spot. There was no training involved. I followed a guy around for 2 weeks, no training packet, no structure. The only thing I learned was where to get coffee. They accuse officers of violating policy while never providing a written policy to refer to. The supervision is promoted from people that have little to no experience in the field, and heavily focused on "kissing up" to those disinterested managers. Avoid this company at all costs, and if you haven't seen the news I suggest you search it out. It isn't just security that is horribly mismanaged.
