The hospital is growing and so are the responsibilities. I've noticed that more and more patients are new to the system. Since the acuity has picked up, I've learned how to multitask and have patients. Doing too many things at one time can cause significant errors. Sure, we all have many tasks to complete and we feel overwhelmed. However, completing tasks one step at a time, from most important to least important, will make the day run smoother. After all, trying to fix a mishap will only prolong the day. 

Being that I was in nursing school, which is demanding, my work hours were very limited. This caused a bit of concern with management since staffing is low because of transfers and a current hiring freeze. I apologized and thanked management and colleagues for being patient and working with the demands of school, especially around finals. During my review, they acknowledged my honesty and thanked me for staying and not giving up. 

Hardest part of my job was balancing maintaining my sanity between work and school. I barely had rest and cried sometimes due to exhaustion, but I kept my eyes on the prize. 

The enjoyable part of my job is interacting with my colleagues and the clientele. I love meeting new people and I've been told by many that my positive attitude is uplifting and a joy to be around. 

Sometime, being around the same people daily can be a little tiring. After all, we see our colleagues more than we see our family. Because of this, work does become "family" oriented. We grow close to one another and start developing bonds. I'm not saying that I'm best friends with everyone, but I do have to like a cordial relationship  work environment.

For some Mount Sinai is a great place to work. Benefits are great (if you are with the Union), the environment is good depending on the area, and for most the team workmanship is there when you need it. 

But we aren't really talking about most people and while Mount Sinai  for some is good on the surface underneath isn't so much; I want to say I love working here but the bigger reason why I'm taking the next step to look for another line of work is because the discrimination is definitely there; for a woman you can easily move up in different areas of the hospital internally but for a man you barely get a phone call back a week after you initially get the interview so there's sexism, Managemen can either be your best friend or they can completely alienate you any chance they get. 

Management depending on your area isn't really that great; barely say hi to you (only if you're in their favor); most seem as if they are better than those they are working over. and while the benefits are really good it doesn't mean a thing if you don't have people looking out for the little man instead of treating the staff like they are less than; now my co-workers depending on who you work with ranges from not bad to they barely will know you exist even if you work in the same room. More often than not some co-workers treat you as if you're still the rookie even if you work there for years...I had co-workers treat me as if I didn't exist and that's not a good sign.
 It's hard to try to find the enjoyable part of the job when you really don't have much to go on and while there are some benefits it very much doesn't outweigh what needs to be fixed on the inside.

I work 12 hour shifts with a 1-2 patient load per RN in a pediatric intensive care unit. A typical day includes assessments and reassessments of patient health status, taking part in morning rounds, administering medications, collaborating with residents and attendings in regards to best treatment options for the patient, sending and reviewing labs with residents, assisting my coworkers with their patients, closely monitoring VS, administering blood products, providing patient education, developing a trusting realtionship with patients and their families as well as comforting patients and their families as needed. The list can go on and on sometimes.

I have learned that every single life is worth giving a fighting chance to live and that I take part in providing the necessary care to give my patients that fighting chance. I have also learned that it is necessary to remain current in healthcare literature in order to provide the best care possible.

My coworkers are an amazing array of individuals who individually and collecetively possess not only an immense wealth of knowledge but an unshakeable desire to provide excellent nursing service to our  patients and their families.

The hardest part of my job is not having adequate support or respect from upper management.

The most enjoyable part of my job is going home knowing in some way big or small I have made a difference in someone's life and that is truly priceless. I also enjoy getting to meet new people and listening to the stories of my patients and their families.

A typical day at work; involves preparing examination rooms; with necessary paperwork and medical instruments. 
I also assist patients to the rooms,taking vitals, communicating with the doctor explaining why the patient is here and their symptoms. 
Performing EKG's, ear and eye irrigation, providing assistance in emergency situation, preparing specimen and performing lab tests. I also analyze them; urine dip stick, strep throat, influenza test, pregnancy tests, Stats A1C.
I also need to request prior authorizations regarding MRIs, CT Scans, and controlled substance medication.
I make follow up appointments, referrals to see a specialist. 
I also assist chronic patients by helping them adapt to the right nutrition, exercise routines, and medication knowledge (when to take, what the dosage is, what the medicine does/what it is for). I also teach them how to log diabetes and hypertension logs. After patients have come to visit I follow up with a phone call to check how their new found habits are going. 
I stock and order the medical and office supplies.
I've also trained to back up the front desk if they are short staffed.
The hardest part of the job is dealing with difficult patients with a language barrier to send them to the emergency room with critical conditions.
The most enjoyable part of the job is that I really like the collaborative teamwork involved with my health care team. I also assisting and helping patients.

My Experience at the Call Center. The call center is not located at the hospital, and management does not give you a tour of the site you'll be answering calls for so you can have more knowledge to assist patients. The only ok thing about this job was the weekly pay. do not consider working here if you're looking for a secure job. Everything is numbers at the call center, it's all about how many calls can you answer in a within an 8hr work day. The supervisors are not supportive, they're in their rooms with the door closed in meetings all day. God forbid you walk in to ask a question while you have a patient on hold, you'll be called back into their office to get chewed out. I was assigned to assist with the calls from primary care but was reassigned to Pulmonary. i had no background in pulmonary department i left a secure job with primary care. High turn over rates with employees. One employee was let go within weeks of being hired because "there was no need for her position". There is only a 10 SECOND break between calls to finish up notes before next call comes in. I worked for the Pulmonary Dept. so patients would literally cough in between syllables how can I rush someone off the phone like that?. Everything is the call center's fault according to the employees at the doctor's office. Multiple scheduling coordinators are friends with the supervisor so they would disable themselves to not receive calls and they would be chit chatting with the "Supervisor's" office 30 mins to 1hr while calls were piling up.

I work at Mt. Sinai for over 5years now. It's been an okay ride so far. I work the night shift. Some nights are difficult staffing wise and some are great. Management however doesn't care about the staff only about getting great scores from the patients. At night we have 1 1/2 hrs break. However the biggest issue is that there is no where to take our breaks. We have no staff lounge or even a place a rest our feet. If we do try to find a corner somewhere to try to take a rest the supervisors are on our case and says they will fire us on the spot if they see us sleeping. We're human beings and are treated like robots. It's not safe to go out in our cars at 2a.m so what are we to do.  They say there's no space in the curreng building for a staff lounge. They're currently building the new extension at the back with 6 floors but I'm pretty sure there won't be any space there either. If we complain nothing is done about it. Nurses that are there for 20+ years said they had to complain for over a few years before they were even given a staff bathroom. So unless you're planning to be on your feet for your entire shift (if you decide 11p.m-7a.m is your shift) and go drive home like a zombie in the morning you shouldn't consider My Sinai for employment. Don't get me wrong, the staff are wonderful,  some of the supervisors are great but we need to rest on our breaks,  we're missing out on the most important hrs of sleep (12a.m-4a.m).

CONS:
Managers Micromanage everything: worse than being back in school

Too much work,so many things to do and no reasonable completion date, very backdated.

No employee recognition: basically get rewarded for hard work with more work

Don't try to do overtime because management will call a meeting with you and manually will try adjust your time(pay attention)

No promotion potential: you will basically be doing the same thing everyday no matter how good you do it get comfy where you are

Toxic gossip filled environment with incompetent staff

Not enough adequate training, basically thrown into work with some floaties

If there are severe weather conditions and you call out  they deduct  vacation days no matter how severe

Don't expect management to disclose their many attendance policies until you violate them and or they try to write you up because they barely know them and half of it doesn't apply to them 

Only main big holidays are off (since it is a hospital whether you work in the actual hospital building or not)

PROS:
Benefits and insurance is pretty good

A lot of extracurricular activities provided, but good luck having the time to enjoy them let alone have access to them if they are not in a location near you

Free examinations and vaccinations in their employee health center

My day starts with printing the 24 hour schedule. I am responsible for scanning the schedule to the appropriate staff. statistics must be kept to record cancellations, additions and activities associated with the schedule. I then log on to several systems to begin scheduling procedures 3 months in advance. I answer phones, make sure the surgical grid is being utilized properly. I check that anesthesia is consecutive. I make sure all cases are confirmed and correct. all while adhering to specific guidelines for the schedule. what I learned is to see the broader picture. My work reflects me and I have to shine. My co-workers and myself work very closely together, We are a team, where one lacks the other helps. The hardest part of my job is being able to stay afloat of it all, because it constantly changes. Via cancellations, additions and dealing with Doctors who only want to hear the word "yes". The best part of my job is knowing I gave it 110% of me. As long as I did my best then that's what shows, that's what counts. And that's what I want to reflect. I do enjoy wearing many hats and learning all that I can. When my job has ended I can smile on the inside knowing that I am being paid to think and not just to function. That's why I have stayed so long...almost 23years and I am a non-union employee. Always have been. I say that to say if my performance was not up to par I would have been fired ions ago. Yes I am very proud of that.

Worked for the Administration side of the outpatient radiology department at the main hospital campus nyc. The job itself is easy to grasp and manage however management had no consideration for employee needs and protection against unfair treatment from patients. Not only that, they increasingly put more and more work on staff although extremely understaffed but make room for a higher patient loads on the daily schedule… “what pandemic?”. It is a physically and mentally taxing place to work no matter how pleasant your coworkers are. Avoid this particular department at all costs. Even supervisors were eager to get out during my time there. During the height of pandemic in 2020 when patient loads were particularly low, one of the directors/higher management of the dept would regularly inquire with us about if there were more patients that day, and remind us that the dept. only makes money through the exams we do everyday.. “we lost alot of money….” Like people were dying of COVID sir and the main concern was filling our waiting rooms.? Plus when they eventually did just that, the COVID protocols were almost non existent or lack luster and in turn many employees fell sick. So happy to have quit and joined new place

I loved my experience in Mount Sinai, my manager was and still amazing. Great atmosphere.

The most difficult part of working here is facing the emotional weight of patients being diagnosed with serious illnesses. It’s heartbreaking to witness their pain and uncertainty, and it takes strength to support them while managing your own emotions.
