Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC)

MAHEC has a great company mission and serves a lot of the medically underserved. 
Non-clinical staff have excellent immediate supervisors, but upper management does not value any of the non-clinical roles. 

Compensation is higher than most area competitors! However, there are no raises for seniority or performance. Compensation is increased only when there is a company wide increase in pay. Comparative pay across different roles also makes little sense. There can be up to a $4 an hour difference in different jobs with the same hiring requirements and level of responsibility. 

I love the work I do and get a great sense of accomplishment working with marginalized communities in our specialty clinics.  The teams that make up these clinics work tirelessly and passionately for their target communities, from those with substance use disorder to patients seeking gender affirming care. 
The unfortunate side is that these clinics get very little support from those in higher managerial positions. The needs and requests of the clinic teams are seen as "non-priorities". This is far more of an issue under the current CEO than previously. 

There is also no real room for upward mobility at MAHEC. They do not offer 'promotions'. They do hire from within, but if you are non-clinical and/or lack a formal degree, this really only offers the opportunity for lateral movement, not upward. 

My last concern is that this non-profit business has become increasingly profit focused in the time I've been here. It is an upsetting trend that I worry will be to the detriment of the patients. 

It felt like a bait and switch.  The interview process made it seem like this amazing company culture that more than makes up for the very low pay.  The reality is that you might have a good group of coworkers, but upper management can't be trusted.

The CEO is great, but the next 5 people after that...  It's as if they took Leadership 101 and then decided to do exactly the opposite of what they learned:  meeting in secret, not involving people in decisions that affect their own work, publicly telling entire teams that they are hated, and more.  Despite HR's best efforts, there is no leadership development because it was killed by upper management who claimed that they didn't need it.  Until upper management wakes up and realizes they are the problem, MAHEC will continue to struggle to find and retain quality employees.

Something you'll hear often is the excuse that MAHEC can't pay market value or add a vital position because they are a non-profit.  You'll be asked to do the work of multiple full-time employees, and that's the excuse you'll get if you ask for help.  No help will come when you ask for it.  This will go on until they've used you up and hung you out to dry.

My co-workers are great! Work flow is sometimes not bad at all, and other times they pile so much on. Pay is not good or fair compared to other positions at other places. New staff starts out making what others that have been here for years are making. They keep piling on work & expectations, but no money to show for it, parking situation (for staff) is a nightmare, management could definitely be better (not enough support or care as far as advancement opportunities or pay raises). A lot of clinical staff members have major attitudes that do not get addressed by management. Overtime isn't a thing here. A lot of our small "Perks" were removed. No incentives or motivation to keep on keeping on here. If the pay was at least what other places are offering it might be worth it, but if you're expecting an actual living wage be prepared for disappointment. 

I prepare for our patient's the day before to stay ahead of what is needed for our patient's on the day of their appointment. I enjoy seeing our patient's come into the office as we are very family oriented. I've learned some of the many different cultures of our patient's and find it very interesting. I love working with our manager Sara, she is there for us when needed and wish she could be with us more often as she is in Asheville and we are a bit of a distance in Lake Lure. Our doctor's are some of the best to be working with as are the front office and nursing help. The hardest part of the job is to hear that one of our patient's has passed away. The most enjoyable part of my job is to have patient's, co-worker's and doctor's that feel like family.

This is a company that serves a community that has a great need, and has many outreach programs to help serve surrounding rural counties. They serve as a safety net provider, and are constantly innovating and re-thinking the ways they can best serve the people of WNC. That being said, from my personal observations, they have a habit of taking on projects with good intentions of helping others, without always laying the proper foundations and infrastructure to be successful, which ends up creating more work on the back end. The management staff can often get bogged down in creating processes and committees, which seems to make it harder to get the pressing work done, and can make them unavailable to the staff that they're managing.

Mahec is nothing like it has been and that’s not a good thing. No support from upper management because they often lack the basic skills to do the job they’re supervising/managing. Mahec is NOT transparent with its employees, patients or providers. They will straight up lie to protect themselves while throwing its hard working employees to the curb. I worked there for years and told the truth about a recent change that my team had asked for clarity on for months prior. No previous write ups of anything just fired for disagreeing with a decision that would have impacted my team. If you’re a spineless yes person than Mahec is the place for you! If you’re skilled and opinionated you won’t last long. So disappointed with this company. I wouldn’t recommend a dog to work there. 

Over worked & wayyy under paid. I worked for this company for over 3 years and got one 25 cent “civility” pay raise & I took the job making less than most people do working at McDonald’s in hopes that the pay would increase later. Don’t get your hopes up! If you’re not making what you want out the gate, don’t waste your time & go somewhere else. 5 people in the dept I worked in were either fired or quit within the first 6 months of working & they only hired back 2 people after working there for over a year and a half so take a wild guess on who took on those job tasks?? After the dept was already very understaffed to begin with. The only thing that made it worth it was the amazing coworkers I had, very good hardworking people. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The returning patients, satellite locations, majority of staff. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The bullying, low pay, disrespect, and disregard when going to management. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Can be hostile, overworked,  favoritism, disrespect from several providers, always short staffed, however, some staff is very supportive, has your back, and get togethers for any reason. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy, minimal bathroom breaks, a few jokes and laughs thrown in.

I worked as a business office specialist for almost two years. While the pay could have been better to compete with the cost of living, It made up for it with PTO accumulation. Management was also very easy to communicate with, no high and mighty attitude to create communication barriers. Requesting time off was also very fair and reasonable. The only drawback, office always seemed to be short staffed. If Mahec hired more reliable workers that could easily be resolved. The mandatory uniforms 4 days a week made it also easy and comfortable. All and all pretty decent place to work.

MAHEC is a great organization for graduating medical students who are seeking a residency and concentrated education in Family Medicine. Physicians and staff work well together to provide excellent education and opportunities. There is a strong sense of camaraderie between the physicians and staff. The most enjoyable aspect of my job was the creativity associated with my job; planning and carrying through events, assisting with resident orientation, and working with outside vendors.
