I came into this role with prior recruiting experience and quickly noticed significant differences in structure, communication, and performance management compared to other organizations where I had recruited.

In previous recruiting roles, expectations were clearly defined, processes were standardized, and success was measured by a combination of activity, candidate quality, hiring outcomes, and overall contribution to the business. While metrics were certainly important, they were used as tools to support results rather than being treated as the result itself.

At Mutual of Omaha Advisors, the recruiting function felt heavily focused on activity metrics, particularly the requirement to hold 15 interviews per week. Candidate quality, advancement through the process, and overall hiring outcomes often seemed less important than simply achieving interview volume. Because candidate show rates were frequently outside of a recruiter’s control, this created pressure to schedule a significantly higher number of interviews just to meet expectations.

Communication and follow-through were also recurring challenges. There were multiple instances where I was informed that concerns or issues had been addressed, only to later discover that no action had actually been taken. This created unnecessary confusion and contributed to a lack of confidence in internal processes.

Another challenge was the amount of time spent in meetings and administrative activities while simultaneously being expected to maintain aggressive sourcing and interview metrics. In practice, this often meant working through lunches or extending the workday to complete core recruiting responsibilities.

There were talented individuals across the organization and opportunities to learn about the financial services industry. However, the overall recruiting environment often felt reactive rather than strategic, with limited emphasis on process consistency, accountability, and long-term recruiting effectiveness.

My recommendation would be to establish clearer expectations, improve communication and ownership, and place greater value on recruiting quality and hiring outcomes alongside activity metrics. Doing so would create a more effective experience for both recruiters and candidates.

My Honest Review
I think the first thing that really stands out to me is the people. I’m surrounded with people that actually care about my wellbeing and want me to be the best version of myself. Going into this career, I did not have a clue what to expect. I had never been in a Sales role before but with the extensive training we had the first 2 weeks and scripts made me feel a lot better. After the first two weeks, we still had daily training, but we were able to get into the field and see how our training was paying off. I’m currently 7 months into the career and I’m constantly learning new ways to improve my business. 

The thing that really stands out to me is the Leadership that I have gotten while working at Mutual of Omaha. I couldn’t imagine doing this job alone, and being a part of a team is huge. Being new in the industry, I feel confident going and talking to individuals that are older than me because if there is something that I do not know, I have a team full of advisors that have my back and can help me. I love the people I work with and I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else. 

The onboarding process is pretty swift and easy to operate. My recruiter handles all of the heavy lifting and makes the transition as smooth as possible. 

The compensation is unlike many other companies that I interviewed with. To start off, Mutual of Omaha offers you a “financing plan”. What this really means is that if you hit the bare minimums, you will get X amount every month. This program is huge because yes you are in 100% commission job, but you also have this to lean back on when things are rocky. 
Another unique feature that I found many other companies don’t do is the joint meetings. What this means is that when a mentor or another advisor comes with you on a meeting, they typically run the meeting and you talk every once in awhile. For the first couple weeks, my mentor ran almost all of my meetings and didn’t take a single cut of anything I make. Mutual of Omaha pays the mentors on the side for this, so what this means is that they are not diving into my pocket and asking for the commission to be split. This is HUGE. Everytime that you split a commission or case, this means that you are only getting half, so it takes longer to build your book of business. Well this is not a problem here at Mutual of Omaha. 

I have been working with the company for a little over 7 months and I have yet to insure a fee. There are no fees for new advisors and they pay for all the study material to pass required exams. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
They offer you an education program the one online university, and provide up-to-date educational information to keep you on top of new trends with new insurance products.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
A commission only job where they expect you to sell to your family members prior to making any other sales which results in too much controlled business which could cost you your insurance license in the long run they offer no help when it comes to building your own book of business and expect you to arrive with up to 220 clients waiting to have insurance policies written for them, and my personal case I had an accident after completing my own boarding process and signing a contract and I needed to miss a couple months of work for rehabilitation and they sent me a letter of termination in the middle of my rehabilitation and recovery process.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The office is full with people who seem like they're genuinely interested in seeing you succeed although the help offered by most people will be a bare minimum management expects you to come up with your only from day one and I have over 200 clients ready and urgently awaiting insurance policies to be written for them in my tenure the the company was undergoing restructuring and my office manager stop answering my phone calls and I had no way to contact the higher up to ask an acquire questions about or resolving any matters with potential clients additionally I was never given a sales navigator tool to be able to evaluate clientele potential to be eligible for specific insurance policies

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sitting around in office spending hours a day trying to chase down leads based on people you know if you do not already know people who either own a company or a high earners it could be rather difficult to get your own business up and starting when you start they'll claim up and down to you that you are your own insurance firm representing the Mutual of Omaha umbrella but this is a facade designed to enamor new agents to dive head first into writing business

My experience at Mutual of Omaha left a very bad taste in my mouth. When I started at Mutual of Omaha I was very excited and I felt privileged to work at such a prestigious company. I went to college to obtain a specific diploma so that I had something additional over other candidates that were applying . My experience there was good. I loved the incentives , discounts, parties and restaurant options that were available only to employees.  The workplace environment could have been better but my plan was to advance to a specific department so I was accepting of the fact that I had to start at the bottom. During my stay I became ill and had to undergo treatment for my illness I ran out of FMLA the first year and at the beginning of the second year I ran out of my FMLA as well. Because of this I was terminated from my employment with Mutual of Omaha. I was told when I was finished with treatment that I would be eligible to come back and work for Mutual of Omaha but I would have to go through training because things had changed. Although I was disappointed I understood because I could come back. Once I was told by my doctor I was in the clear, which was shortly after I completed my treatment, I went back and was told to refill out the application excetera. I did these things but I never got my job back. I was aware I had to start at the bottom again and work my way up again and I was fine with that. Unfortunately I tried for the next two and a half years to get my job back and was very unsuccessful.  I spoke with several people in Human Resources as well as management who were rude and short with me.  They would give me false hope stating that they would contact me and NEVER did. It was very clear that I qualified for this position but unfortunately no one reached out to me. Finally I gave up after trying for 2 years. This is why I say Mutual of Omaha is not a place to work unless you're going to be healthy for the entire time your an employee.

Typical non-caring institution. I was terminated because I did not disclose a possible illness that I had at the time of being hired. The illness is one that there are no official tests for therefore I said that I did not have it on the original survey. When I did call the nurse in Omaha to explain that I in fact did have a real diagnosis, I explained that maybe I had both --she asked why I did not say yes to the previous illness, I said that I wasn't sure if it was real and that I was afraid maybe I would not be hired. She then said she would have to bring this to HR. I asked if I could speak to someone in HR, she said no and they would get back to me. The next step was I was terminated for not telling the truth about a private health matter. I was never given a chance to explain my situtation. I was a good employee never called in sick. No job since Nov 2011, we will probably lose our home now. Mutual of Omaha Bank is a prime example of another non-caring institution, they say they are but my experience proves to be different. This could all have been avoided if someone would have cared enough about a good employee and discussed the issue. The day I called the nurse I was very emotional and not thinking clearly -- I tell everyone without going into detail that this is not a good institution. Shame on Mutual of Omaha especially with the workforce being so tight for terminating someone over a private health matter -- who do they think they are? What ever happened to second chances? I didn't steal, did my job, never called in sick. Living in AZ/Nevada employees have very little rights up against these large institutions. I did not have the money to get a lawyer so yes Mutual of Omaha had the last word. So sorry wish I were working.

Mutual has some great benefits but the past 2.5 years I feel mutual could be a better place to work. For starters, since we began working remotely the employees have overwhelmingly requested flexible work and sure enough, every review , it gets pushed aside and says it's in the works . They have done the same thing with our pay, while boasting and complimenting our hard work that business is well above plan ..as is profits ..we are told again to wait while they review  paying us a wage that we need to sustain in today's economy . My work has quadrupled , it is a production environment and after 2.5 years im starting to feel like a tiny screw in a well oiled machine. Everyday is the same I think mutual could be a very great company however they need to listen to their employees we are overworked,  exhausted and underpaid ...in addition, if the concern of the employees was a top priority they would have figured out a way to implement a flexible work environment...many departments do not have to be manned in the  9 to 5 time slot...yet it remains unchanged ...actually if they took the time to listen and then implement the suggested changes everyone could have a flexible work life which ensures a much better work life balance . After these whole 2.5 years of the pandemic mutual employees has bore the influx of business & worked countless hours of overtime to keep up with our seemingly endless workload  . The record numbers have been directly off the backs of mutual employees ... and in return directors decided we need a new and extremly costly building that is said  to attract new talent . ...how about attracting the employees they have by giving them what we have asked for time and time again. What we ask for is not  unreasonable. Our workload , pay and work life  balance has been and still is unreasonable with all things considered

•	Responsible for the analysis of business requirements and design implementation of the business solution.
•	Developed Conceptual, Logical and Physical data models for central model consolidation.
•	Worked with DBAs to create a best fit physical data model from the logical data model.
•	Conducted data modeling JAD sessions and communicated data-related standards.
•	Used Erwin r7.3 for effective model management of sharing, dividing and reusing model information and design for productivity improvement.
•	Redefined many attributes and relationships in the reverse engineered model and cleansed unwanted tables/columns as part of data analysis responsibilities.
•	Developed process methodology for the Reverse Engineering phase of the project.
•	Involved using ETL tool Informatica to populate the database, data transformation from the old database to the new database using Oracle. 
•	Involved in the creation, maintenance of Data Warehouse and repositories containing Metadata.
•	Involved in the critical design review of the finalized database model.
•	Involved in the study of the business logic and understanding the physical system and the terms and condition for database.
•	Created documentation and test cases, worked with users for new module enhancements and testing.

You're not an employee, you're a contract worker.
No fixed hours, but NO employee benefits.
Boring! I loved getting to meet all sorts of new people as clients. Finding clients is the troublesome part, though. The most frustrating thing about this job is struggling to find leads. After becoming contracted and earning your first $3200, Mutual of Omaha will give you an account to buy leads from them, however most of these leads will not pay off. Also, until you hit that $3200 you will be expected to pander all of your friends and family members for their money. BUT BE ADVISED. Another source of leads is calling on a list of "orphan" policy holders. These are existing clients who either bought through the mail or their agent left the company. So if you manage to sign up your loved ones but then decide to leave the company later then you will further strain your relationship through this level of harassment.

Honestly, most of my time felt like a waste because it is only commission based pay and bonuses. Call people all different times of the day just because they showed a faint interest in your product. Also, ordering medical records from a hospital can take anywhere from a week to several months! Not Mutual of Omaha's fault, just the medical administration's, but when you're waiting all that time just to see if your client is approved is enough to drive you crazy!

I love helping people, and I do feel that people are helped through my work here. But this job does not make me happy because of the lack of work available.

Another thing! file your own taxes because they don't withhold any. You're not an employee, you're a contract worker!

I am no longer with Mutual of Omaha, but I miss the company and the coworkers a lot. I used to work in IT, so the review is only for IS/IT department. They are hard to match in terms of freedom of decision-making, flexibility and people make you feel like a family. I had five managers over my 11 year span with the company, and every manager was simply stellar - they really cared about my professional development, about keeping me engaged, and never ever tried micro-managing.
Mutual is a mature company with awesome culture, they treat employees fairly, keep unnecessary stress out and make work fun.
Jobs are quite stable - they haven't had a layoff since 2000. Bonuses are practically a given. Compensation may not be the industry highest, but "close enough" for the Midwest. You will be working alongside some bright folks - it's a great way to learn and build a career from ground up. Plenty of openings for experienced professionals along technology stacks too. Lots of flexibility to accommodate remote work, cross-train, switch positions inside the company. If you struggle with your current role, they'd move you into a different position to give you an opportunity to succeed (several times if needed) rather than give you the boot.
The leadership is proactive and is very serious about future strategy, rather than being purely situational or reactionary.
What can I say - I miss that place!

My experience as an advisor here is similar to other people's I'm seeing. The company had convinced me that I will be a financial advisor for them, I got my Series 65 and everything. But that ended up being a lie. Being a "financial advisor" here just means that your job is to sell as much life insurance and annuities as you can, because those are the only things the company bases production on. They push you to sell a lot of Universal life insurance because the premiums are high so that will make you and the company the most money, even though a lot of the time it's an inappropriate product for your clients. I was doing pretty good for a while selling to my family and friends, but eventually I ran out of people in my network to sell to, and that's when the company stopped trying to help me, because they know that once you run out of your own network to sell to, it will be very difficult to sell to other people and that you will likely end up leaving. At that point they just waited for me to quit so they could bring in the next person to repeat the whole process over. I wish the company cared about their advisors, and not just use them as guinea pigs to make their numbers look good. You're paid 100% on commission, plus the company charges you for rent at your office and won't reimburse you for any business expenses. In the end I made very little money because I had so many expenses that ate away at my pay. Worst job experience of my life, and I would not recommend working for this company to anyone.
