A typical day at work entailed myself as a lead lab assistant and two other assistants preparing our samples to start a run (loading machines).  We would assess any challenges upon starting the shift from earlier shift and split up responsibilities as needed.  I learned about the intricate world of gene's and how to look at DNA on a monitor, assessing problems, running quality assurance programs and the pioneering way of manually loading DNA into a machine.  My coworkers were fun to work with and always working together as a team to have a successful day.  The hardest part of the job was when things would go wrong, figuring out what the cause could be and when to contact someone in the middle of the night that there was a problem that needed someone's awareness.  The most enjoyable part of the job was having a job that didn't exist only a few years ago, being part of something cutting edge that would change the course of the world for the better.  My department sequenced the world's first complete rice genome which made world news.  I thought it was exciting to be a part of something so huge and important.   The company was also one to help process the remains of the victims from 911.  I took a lot of pride in doing my job with utmost accuracy and appreciation for the amazing world that we live in.

I started out in one department and it was fine then we all got moved to a new role and department with new managers and it went downhill quick. The managers and HR DO NOT listen to employees. I told them I did not want to move to that department after they asked if I wanted to and they moved me anyway. They expect you to do so much work that the managers themselves have no idea what to do and if you don't meet your numbers, you get written up and put on corrective action. My new manager is the worst person I have ever worked under. She openly makes inappropriate jokes to employees.  So disrespectful, only knows how to discipline. Makes people cry in the office. Many people dislike her. Almost everyone on her team including myself has gone to HR and they did nothing. They definitely favor the managers over the employees. It's an absolute nightmare. I feel stressed and unhappy everyday and I had worked at myriad years before that and loved my job, currently looking for a new job.  As time passes, the company is falling apart and not treating the employees good. They should listen to us when we say the manager is awful and makes us feel uncomfortable. Instead the employees get in trouble. I would pass on Myriad so you can stay happy and find better people to work with.

Really easy work.  You could show up drunk (several coworkers drank on the job) and still at least pretend to work and management wont notice.

I could not discourage someone enough from working here.  The unethical and borderline immoral things that went on in the business and between coworkers was unbelievable.  The amount of infighting and badmouthing that went on between coworkers meant there wasn't enough work to keep people busy, and management spent alot of their time trying to play mediator, establishing clear favorites and throwing everyone else under the bus. Management is entirely incompetent, and only have their job because they've worked there longer than anyone else. (Which is a true achievement in reality, it really is a terrible place to spend your limited time)

No pay raises, and pay rate is already much lower than other companies that perform the same tasks.  The turnover rate at myriad is very high, 4 people left my small team in my short year there.  The few people that remain think its a badge of honor to be abused, most people have more self respect and end up leaving.

I have never experienced a more miserable place to work.

During a typical day, you are expected to assist nearly 100 patients with obtaining insurance coverage for genetic testing.
You obtain insurance coverage by consulting with insurance customer service representatives, physicians and patients. 
You work as a team together to complete daily caseloads and can sometimes be a challenge.
The hardest part is when you think about what it's all about. The majority of the people you talk to every day have been touched by cancer in a very close way and often times the patient's themselves have cancer and that can be very difficult. Another element that is difficult is dealing with insurance companies all day long.
I love making a difference every day. All of the patients requesting genetic testing have a goal in mind when it comes their personal and family life. Everything I do in my day is to help other people.

Fair pay and wonderful benefits.  The company mission to help patients is amazing and many of the employees share a passion for it.  Management keeps making changes that prevent employees from being able to follow through on the mission.  They push employees to sacrifice quality & accuracy of their work for speed, even if it is to the detriment of patient care.  If you share any concerns to this practice with managers, they don't listen and just get mad.  Once you have done this, watch out, most managers will take issue with anyone that has disagreed with them and try to make their work life miserable until they quit or the manager finds an excuse to fire them.  I watched this happen repeatedly in my department and heard about the same abuse by management in other departments.  Upper management doesn't seem to have a clue what is going on in most departments, or what the employee's jobs entail.

Company takes good care of its employees: there is Gym, numerous lunchrooms, lounges, clean and cozy washrooms, etc. Parking garage and open area, with assigned lots starting on the 5-th year of employment. Company provides free travel to celebrate 10-th and 20-th anniversary of employment. 
Hard to get recognition or promotion after management gets used to your presence, it is easier for new-comers to impress supervisor and /or manager. Pay is very decent for Utah, and annual salary increase can be relied upon, with rare exceptions.
Interesting or intellectual work is considered as a reward here, and employee's punishment is routine and stagnation, day in and day out.
Whenever overtime is required, management provides pizzas, doughnuts, or even full lunch from Cafe Rio or such.

I have felt completely supported from day one. Everyone in the lab is always willing and happy to help whenever I have any questions. I have been in my position for a little over a year and even still, if a machine is acting up, my coworkers are always seeing if I need any help to fix the issue. Often times I do not even have to ask for help because they are already checking in. My manage truly cares about me and is always providing the best resources so that I can be successful. 

Covid has impacted the lab by creating supply chain issues. It seems like every week there is a different item we need that has been difficult to get. The supervisors have all been great at keeping us informed about these issues and helping create solutions. Even if the supervisors are not on site during one of these confusing changes, they are always available and checking in to see if we need any assistance. 

Myriad is an innovative company.  Therefore, things are always changing as management invests in new processes, more efficiencies and new ways to stay competitive.  Change is not easy and requires constant adjustments.  Work is exciting for people that love a challenge and can be challenging for those that want more stability.  Myriad is dedicated to genetic testing.  If you are not in the areas of genetic counseling, marketing or willing to perform as prescribed than one may feel like opportunities for advancement are few.  However, if one is willing to adapt to the expectations it is a great company to work for and I recommend it fully!

I really like working with my fellow colleagues. They are knowledgeable and eager to help when I need assistance. I'm excited to work with my supervisor. She knows all the stations in the lab well and also helps when asked. She is fair during annual and biannual assessments. She encourages and promotes a fun atmosphere where people want to work and get things done. The company as a whole offers decent benefits but the pay isn't exactly what other companies in the industry are offering. My wages are just enough to pay bills. I don't have much left over to afford many luxuries. I must work nights and weekends to keep my pay at it's current level. I would like to move up but there really isn't an opportunity to do so. There are people in the lab that haven't even moved up to a level II or III technician in 5+ years.
