NATIONAL AIRLINES

National started as a smaller "mom and pop" kind of shop with big plans to expand upgrading from prehistoric DC-8's to a fleet of 747 and 757 aircraft. The company cares about it's employees offering, among other things, free juices, sodas, coffee, and teas. This was followed by the addition of free lunch provided every day. But just as with most expanding companies the costs of expansion, relocation, and asset acquirement start setting in and they have recently went through the process of eliminating a level of management and are now operating from a point of trying to maintain said expansion while reducing the size of the work force. I have been told by a number of employees since I had left that is not even close to the same company that it had been when it left Michigan. I know if I knew the company was going to turn into what it has, I never would have left Michigan to support this company. The company does offer some really great benefits to it's employees, however it is sounding like the amount of cow dung you have to shovel to get the benefits is shifting to the "it's not worth it" side.

This was a very productive environment to expand my customer service skills as well as the benefit package was a plus, I've learned to various airline codes and procedures that was used on a daily basis. Management was always helpful whenever an individual were to have his or her hands full with a complicated task or if a solution needed to be rectified by a manager. My co-workers were also the backbone of the company and like myself,always put the customer first. The hardest part of the day would be either the flight were to be late taking off due to inclement weather or the passenger's luggage didn't arrive with them on the flight and then a lost bag claim has to be submitted. The most enjoyable part about the job is once you know the airline protocol,it stays with you and you can take it with you and apply for a position in the airport or in the airline industry.

National was acquired in 1980 by Pan Am Corp. They needed a domestic carrier to feed Pan Am's international hubs. What actually happened was Pan Am saw a valuable asset in National Airlines, and instead of using it as a feeder to their route structure, they started selling off National's assets to raise cash, which they needed desperately. Thus, defeating the original purpose of the acquisition. Some say this was the real purpose of the acquisition, and that this was the only way they could get the approval of National stockholders to make the deal. Many of us at National smelled a rat right from the beginning. We coined the slogan "We urge no merge."
We were right, there was a fox in the hen house, in the name of Bud Maytag, CEO of National and the Pan Am board of directors.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very little is good for Ride on mechanic.  The pay is 400 per day 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Living on the airplane for 18 days a time.   With a shower every 6 to 7 days . No overnights in hotels only enough time to shower and return to the aircraft.   

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work until you quit .  Upper management has no problem firing you when you say no I won't do something.  Even after being on the plane for 2 weeks without a shower 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start at a Station mostly Anchorage.   Spend 3 hours on the ground then fly 10 to 12 hours then 3 hours on ground and repeat over and over for 6 to 7 days then 6 hours on ground to get a shower and right back at it

Management is constantly changing every 2-3 years. Company doesn't care about their employees. They only care for the bottom line. They are in a bad REP with the FAA. They never follow their manuals. The current management has very little or no experience. Most of them have been fired from their previous jobs and they all come from the same sh*tty company. (Google management names). The operation is Garbage. It is a one man privately held company, so anything goes. Micro managed at every junction. Very little training and zero percent open to feed back. The overall management culture is very cutthroat. If you don't like the way things are ran then your options are suck it up or leave because nothing is going to change. HR is bad too! 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Having the opportunity to travel around the world while getting paid to do.so. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The entire maintenance and operations department. No experience between any of the managment team on how to properly run either operation, constant crisis to deal with on a daily base and no regard for business ethics. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Do what ever it takes to move airplanes, no matter what the circumstances are. As long as they can make a flight schedule, the operation does not care about what the meaning of airworthiness is. All that matters is that the owner is able to make some money.

Terrible place to work at.  The HR department has had a lot of turnover and it's always the good people who leave.  Right now the HR department is not to be trusted at all, they act as cover ups.  They promote people in to HR who have no clue of what they are doing. There's no real growth unless you are someone's family member.  Like literally they hire a lot of people's kids/siblings/spouses etc.  It's a total joke. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
there is noting good about working for this company . lots of FAA illegalities , labour laws broken . 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
always incompetent people that knows noting about aviation works there makes working there stressful 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Hostile , arrogant , do not care about its employees. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long hrs . no compensation for work done on duty . don’t care about employees times of rest .

If you want to see some of the most beautiful destinations in the world and travel internationally this is the airline for you. It’s very tight knit so you know who you fly with and everyone is close. The passengers are incredible mostly DOD, private orchestra, group, sports team flights. The only downfall is it’s difficult to do this job with personal commitments at home since you are gone for long but it’s manageable. If you volunteer on your days off you can make some incredible money. Being flexible is key to working for a charter operation so if you are okay with that I suggest this airline. 

I enjoyed working for the company when I was younger because I was able to travel the world. I learned a lot and met some amazing people. Including my coworkers, we became family because we would spend so much time on the road together. I also learned the value of hard work, some days would be 15-20hrs long. We flew a lot of military personals so I was proud of the work I did and I believe I became more culturally aware. The hardest part was the schedule, working for an airline is a lifestyle not a job. I would be overseas for weeks sometimes months on end.
