Barstow Transfer & Storage is the Franchise. It is family owned and family managed. It also employs more than a handful of family members.

Owner's Sister owns Apple Valley Transfer & Storage (Atlas Van Lines franchise). They employ all employees through both companies, and tend to cut corners on overtime hours by shifting employees from one company to the other during the shift and throughout the week and pay periods.

They do offer benefits, but no help paying for it. They are very cheap. Most of the trucks do not have AC (it gets over 110 degrees in the summer every day). They do not offer PTO. They do not offer Vacation. No chance at promotion unless it's a Driver that obtains a Class A license. Back breaking work, and do not offer PPE or tools. They just recently started issuing Dollies to drivers. 

Before they stopped contracting and became company, they did not pay over time to any employees.

Summer time hits and it's over time to double time every day. Spring and fall are slow, and winter there are little to no hours (I have received a $0.00 pay check). 

They are very understanding when it comes to mistakes and personal life. They give more hours to those who earn it. They are rated #1 moving company in the High Desert of Souther California. They have a great mechanic, and the GM and Warehouse Managers are understanding and easy to get along with. If you ask for something in the right way, you usually get it. 

What they lack in pay, equipment and benefits, they make up for with understanding and easy going attitudes.

I liked the work, the environment, and the people there at the company.  However, there was no chance for me to stay permanently at the company.  I initially started as a claims clerk in their claims department helping out in their file room since they were behind.  They were also behind in answering e-mails.  I finished those tasks within two weeks (they thought it would take me one or two months).  Since I finished those tasks, they gave me a lot more to do including opening claims, starting and following up traces, opening mail, answering phones, etc.  So a summer clerk job turned into a prolonged administrative assistant job.  Handling multiple tasks a day was challenging at times but that job taught me a lot of skills.

I am writing a review after working in the claims unit at NCS - a subsidiary of National Van lines for three months.

It has been some time since I worked with such and engaged and supportive management staff.  The particulars of working cargo related claims can provide a long lead time on training.   

If you hit a snag or need assistance, the whole team is there is help out.  Also getting status requests from HR on how things are going seems to ensure a smooth running operation.  

The building looks a bit outdated, but the facilities are well looked after and the place is well maintained.  

No regrets after three months in.

Getting awkward pieces of furniture thru doorways 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Cool and layed back nice group of people inside the office and inside the where house 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A three man crew 8 hour day load/unload

A typical day depends on the job, what I have learned on the job is nothing I didn't already have experience in, management has a problem with lack of communication, I have to show and teach my co workers what to do, hardest part of the job is the job itself and the most enjoyable part of this job is the different views of the places I work.

Generally everyone in every department "pulls their weight". Sure there are some who don't which is saddening/aggravating in itself.  However, its hard to see those who are giving 100%  everyday versus those who spend more time trying to look busy.

The company itself is amazing, the agent was great too. Loved the work with the military families we moved. Was not looking forward to leaving the company and the many things this company offered. Kids come first, and family first, and that is one thing National Van Lines understood.

Management is great. The company is flexible regarding time off and work life balance. The benefits are incredible and paid time off, paid holidays are given. I was given the tools needed to succeed. My training prepared me to be successful in my position. My immediate supervisor valued my input, is supportive and always went to bat for me.

This company takes very good care of their people. Just like family. A day at work is driving your rig to and from all states. My dispatch is the best in the industry. The hardest part of the job is not is not really hard. Just do your job whitch is driving the truck. Most enjoyable is getting loaded in a timely fashion.
