Was originally hired on a 3 day from home, 1 day in office basis but since there were some people abusing their work from home abilities in other departments the entire company was punished to 3 days in office 1 from home. This shift is long and unsustainable as many people just switch to 5 days (3 home/2 in office). Hiring process was quite stressful. Training class for P&C was great but I imagine it depends on the class and instructor. After passing the test is where it can go downhill. Software with major flaws that complicate the job for applications, billing, payments, documents, emails, etc and even those who’ve been there for years know but they haven’t made adaptations. Once done training the onboarding is a brutal as you start taking calls soon after but the programs they show you and teach to you is forced to you. Instead of genuinely instructing the ins & outs they correct on the fly. Imagine getting that feedback but taking tons of calls and then getting pulled to side for them to tell you you’re not doing well. It could all be corrected that even the onboarding team knows this. After the onboarding they stated that a revamp to the training system is coming as well as updated software but who knows lol. It was so bad for the training class I was in that they put us back in the “bridge” as they realized just how flawed things are. Yes with exp and time it gets better to be fair but be mindful of yourself. Benefits were good, typical office gossip some people are very nice but not everyone is your friend. Ironically heard supervisors talking bad about a coworker after a tiny mistake, this supervisor was one of the people just weeks before was in a networking event for us new hires ironically. Can’t speak for every manager/supervisor but how’s networking supposed to go when you have supervisors talking negatively about you on a call with a customer you just transferred them to. After a while I found a better opportunity. No flexibility in scheduling, no callouts but give 20 days PTO only with certain plans to try and compensate, hard to get days off anyway. 

I’m an account representative in the Personal Lines department. They are constantly hiring for our position. Because of retention issues, they recently let us choose to work from home up to 3 days a week. However, this does not solve the work/life balance. Every November you have to bid for your pto days a year in advance. It goes based off of metrics and seniority so you are not guaranteed to get the days off you requested. As others mentioned, everything is micromanaged and measured. Not a minute goes unnoticed. It does get stressful having to take back-to-back calls and are not allowed more than 3-4 minutes to get work finished and breath in between phone calls. There is constant policy changes along with training for multiple states and multiple lines of business when you barely learned the previous states requirements. When you first start, they give you only two options for shifts, which includes working every Saturday or the night shift. This would be fine if you were allowed to use your PTO days as needed. However, they block out which days you can take off so even if you request a day off two, three, four, nine months in advance, it does not matter. Unless it is a major life event  in which you can request “special consideration” but the managers say themselves they cannot guaranteed it will be approved. If a Mon-Fri shift become available, you bid for it again based off metrics and senority. Then if you switch shifts for better work/life balance, you have to take a 5%-15% pay cut. Most people stay in this shift for years because of this. The onboarding training is great but afterward, no emphasis is placed on training and furthering your career. It starts to feel a lot like you are a number instead of a person at NJM.

What attracted me to NJM at first was the fact that they have been around for more than 100 years and that they were financially stable (always a good thing). I'm pleased to say that with two plus years here, I still think joining NJM was a great decision. From what I gather from colleagues who work in various parts of the building, above average work-life balance seems to be fairly consistent, which is important to me and my family. The benefits are also really good as far as the health insurance and the 401k. Dental coverage is limited, but most of the coverage is pretty good over all.

The culture is good. I'm sure every department may be a little different, but my personal experience has been really positive. My co-workers are great as well. There are a lot of (overdue) changes going on with technology and alike, which are bringing NJM up to speed with other companies. I think those of us who have worked for other employers in the past decade probably all see this as a really good thing, but some of the people who have been at NJM forever (and only know working here) seem to fear change a bit more than most. Understandable, I guess. Overall, I would recommend them as an employer.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Complimentary breakfast, hot beverages, water, and soup! Also the very helpful colleagues who work in your isle or surrounding cubicles.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Trying your best to grind out 2-4 days worth of work in 9 hours; Administrative expectations in the midst of “the great resignation”.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Environment is beautiful, plenty of natural light, and indoor plants. The claims department was a culture of walking on eggshells, choosing at least 2 days off when you could just to catch a break from receiving overwhelming numbers of claims & activities, everyone I knew were always looking for another job, but had zero time to search because of working over 12 hours just to keep up. Burnout is a very fast and real thing.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Walk in, get to the cubicle, check activities/new claims—complete quick/easy claim activities and try to get them down from about 55-15; open new claims (call claimants to initiate investigation); maybe go grab food from the cafeteria, but the 8 ball creeps up and you find yourself just trying to chase it then get ahead.

  It’s a hard job that I would not recommend to friends. Each day comes with a new set of struggles and challenges and leaves you pretty drained by the days end. Despite that, most people who work here are very kind and it help’s especially with customers who really aren’t always the nicest. 
  It’s not really spelled out how you get promoted. Like the actual steps you would need to take or marks you would need to meet for a certain time frame. Although you are told what you could potentially become just not how to get there. 
  I find myself feeling lonely here A Lot. Most of the people who I have started with have quit, and the ones who haven’t are separated into other groups that I have no contact with. Also they have moved me around from group to group and supervisor to supervisor with little or no explanation why, which makes it hard to connect with others. Some of the people you work with don’t even work in the same office. 

You can work from home, but it requires that you work over time and you’re still required to go into the office at least once a week even if you do the over time. And it’s very busy so you are bound to get stuck for overtime outside of what you have to do just to work from home.

My department is big but it is divided into smaller groups.  Can’t really say much about the job. My position is very repetitive on a daily basis and you feel like you’re living the real life of the movie Office Space. The rules are changing constantly. Lack of communication is big in the department I work with and also a lot of pressure to make quotas.  They expect more than what you can bring. Also micromanaging I’ve experienced and I am not a fan of that.  I do my job, I leave and I shouldn’t have to feel stressed after work .  I do not need to have someone breathing down my back constantly about anything and everything.  I have been looking outside of my department and I am very disappointed to see the lack of jobs that I am actual qualified for without having “experience “ or a “degree” so it’s been very discouraging.  The only thing I can say is a lot of employees are very friendly, the work from home option (which is why I accepted the position ) and the benefits are very amazing but I guess that’s to make up the lack of salary for my position . I am only hoping that things get a lot better for myself so I can plan to retire from here. It seems a lot of employees  stay and retire but I would think it depends on their jobs and how happy they are doing it. I think if my department management was better , I would have an entirely different opinion. 

During my internship with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) at NJM Insurance Group, a typical day was dynamic and challenging. My mornings often involved analyzing large datasets to identify potential patterns of fraud. Collaborating with legal and management teams, I presented insights and drafted comprehensive reports summarizing my findings.

This experience deepened my understanding of the insurance industry and sharpened my ability to communicate technical findings effectively.

The management team was approachable and supportive, fostering an environment where I felt encouraged to ask questions and take initiative. The workplace culture was collaborative yet structured, promoting accountability and teamwork across departments.

The hardest part of the job was navigating the complexities of interpreting large, multifaceted datasets within tight deadlines. However, this challenge was also rewarding, as it pushed me to think critically and creatively.

The most enjoyable part was seeing my work directly contribute to successful investigations. It was fulfilling to know that my efforts protected company assets and upheld ethical business practices.

Most of the co workers are nice and friendly. In my position I get to work from home 4 x a week and one day in the office as long as I work one hr of ot., we are required to work one Saturday a month . Pay needs improvement compared to competitors. NJM does provide incentives, rewards, raffles to win a little extra something but it’s taxed. Lunches are 30 min unpaid. We get a lot of upset customers they should really consider 1 hr paid lunches. They will give u a pen as a reward if u work extra hard but I’d rather get a raise or extra bonus. Sup and managers don’t care for our lives they just want us to work in the same position forever. It’s hard to get promoted or even try to go into another department. They offer classes for certifications but only based off ur current role so if u wanted to go into a higher level but it requires a certificate your not allowed to take it unless that position that requires you to have that certificate hires you. NJM has good benefits and an 8% 401k match

All the reviews are true! The micromanagement is ridiculous to the point where it becomes harrassment. Getting off is so hard, you literally have to request off months in advance and theres still a huge chance you will not have the day off. The company lores you in with the good starting salary and pto days but guess what, YOU CAN NEVER USE YOUR PTO. Also reps make about 10k less than reps at other insurance companies. NJM is extremely behind when it comes to technology, most employees still dont have the capability to work from home. They basically force employees to come in ill so the whole building is a cesspool of sickness. Managers and supervisors barely even know how to use a computer or do their jobs properly. This company is not headed in the right direction at all. If you are thinking of apply, DONT. You will literally be chained to a desk. A 5 minute bathroom break will have you in trouble.

Working at NJM Insurance has its pros and cons. On the positive side, the benefits start quickly after hiring, the training is thorough, and the employees I met were all kind and supportive. The job is fully phone-based, so there’s no face-to-face customer interaction, which some may prefer. However, the call center environment is extremely fast-paced, with constant back-to-back calls, little time to think, and mostly frustrated customers. The high-stress atmosphere and strict performance metrics can be overwhelming, and short breaks don’t offer much time to reset. While the structure and support are there for those who can handle the pressure, it’s not the best fit for everyone. If you thrive in a fast-paced, high-energy setting, this could be a solid opportunity—but if you prefer a less stressful work environment, it might not be the right choice.
