I really wanted to continue working at NMMC, I had 22 years in and wanted to get in 25, but my daughter wanted me to move closer to her and play grandma. NMMC had extensive educational opportunities, with each unit's educator making sure each nurse had at least 25-30 CEs each 2 year term, enough to renew their licenses and then some.  They had ACCLAIM insurance, which paid no matter where I went, and took care of all of my health needs, be it vision, dental, medical, or pharmaceutical, using but a single card. They offered a great life insurance plan which I took advantage of with my late husband. They also had yearly health fairs, which determined whether or not one would get the lower insurance cost. They encouraged a healthy lifestyle, as evidenced by the food served in the cafeteria. There was always, salad bar, baked potato bar, deli, etc. For Christmas, they closed the cafeteria for everyone except for the employees, who were served the best possible cruisine for their Christmas meal, and there were drawings to distribute monetary gifts, of anywhere from $20.00 to $500.00. Employees had a garage in which to park at no cost, along with a covered walkway to keep them out of the rain, providing the rain wasn't blowing sideways. I could just go on and on, but I think I've made my point. At one time, employees were given bonuses, but that went to the wayside after Medicare started taking back money.

Working at the hospital is great but the hospital isn't doing so good financially and its causing people to get sent home or they will call and tell you to not even come in at all. The department I work in is hurting because of poor management and its hard coming to work knowing how to do your job but you have a supervisor that knows nothing about doing theirs and you basically have to do what your supervisor tell you. That kind of situation bring a lot of chaos everyday you come in and its very aggravating because it seems no one care so you have to just go in and do the best you can. Working at the hospital is not at all like it used to be when I first started and I have just been there for three years. It doesn't seem to be getting any better. Also trying to transfer out of the department is very difficult, its more about who you know and not about your work ethic. Although the hospital have a lot of opportunity its hard to experience all it has to offer and learn more because of the situation with trying to get transferred. The most enjoyable part of the job is really just meeting and talking with all the different patients and their families that come into the hospital, hearing some of their stories will change you.

I have worked for this company for 6 years. I worked the first 2 years in the float pool at the main hospital. This was 12 hour shifts. I transferred to home health and have been working in home health for this company for the past 4 years. The schedule is flexible. As far as if I or my children have a doctor's appointment, I can go to the appointment without using my PTO time. I will just have to work longer later that day or a different day to make up my time. I am on salary. I worked a lot working in the float pool, as this gave me experience in all different areas. I have worked med surg, renal, cardiac, oncology, ortho, neuro, step down, etc. This gave me a strong background in nursing, and has helped me a lot in home health. In home health, you are at a patient's home by yourself and you really have to be able to critically think, concerning the needs of the patient. Home health is  like a case management job, because you take care of all of the patient's needs. You also see this patient for a longer period of time than you do in the hospital typically.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Onboarding was great including computer training.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
6 south has the WORST culture. Alot of infighting and excuse driven. The regular employees hate it there and the traveling nurses are overwhelmed. Poor management.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Some floors are great. The south halls seem to be the worst with staffing.It is a culture of every man for himself.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Really short staffed, patient complaints, and a  high acuity of every patient on the unit. The patient to RN ratio is about 1:6 if youre lucky. Morning med pass can literally extend into the afternoon. The aides on 6 south hide from you orrefuse to help. It is mentally and phyzically exhausting. Complaining makes you a target by other staff. I literally went all day wo anyone speaking to me.

It was a normal night shift, very fast paced and we where always short staffed. On occasion I worked 12 hr night shifts but a couple of times I stayed over and worked a 8 hr day shift because we didn't have extra staff. Overall it was a great place to work with job security.I loved my patients and most of the family members. It is a place to have a career and provide for your family. If you don't work out in the department you are hired in , they have in house transfers available. One thing about North MS Medical Center is that you will have job security.

The pay is decent. As a non-benefitted employee I started out at $22/hr. 12hr shifts but we are always so short staffed (mainly techs like me) and we obviously do the majority of the heavy lifting and all the patient care ourselves. It’s great that they offer continuing education but the points system is a little wild. You got sick or was hospitalized and had to call out and provided a drs excuse? They still count that against you. You have Reasonable accommodations in place for a disability that flares up and they tell you that they won’t count it against you, but they do. I attempted to transfer to a different department and go PRN but was informed that they’re only accepting external applicants rather than current employees wanting to transfer first like they used to do. Other than that it’s a great place to work. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
They cater to their doctors, overload their nurses with patients putting their licenses at risk, give millions to their CEO and surgeons and only repay nurses with 1 car cupholder coaster. 
Hospitals cannot run without nurses and they wonder why all of them are quitting. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Overloading nurses with high acuity patients and ratios, putting your license at risk because the nurses can’t give sufficient care when they are stretched so thin. 
Doctors are catered to and nurses are given the short end of the stick. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful, not respected, pay nurses what they deserve. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Anxiety ridden and burnt out by the time you get home

A typical day at NMMC may require working on your home unit or being floated to another unit very frequently; therein learning a lot of skills in a short period of time. My immediate charge nurse is wonderful to work with. My co-workers are good team players and we help each other consistently. The hardest part of my job is being frequently floated to other units and expected to take a full load of patients that I am not accustomed to taking care of. The most enjoyable part of my job is learning, teaching, caring, comforting and hoping a I make a positive difference in someone's life.

When I started out here it was great to work for but now it has turned all political and not about patient care. Put on a big show for the camera and TV, but it is about the bottom $$$ for the CEO and Admin of the company. They figure employees are "dime a dozen", but quality employees are priceless to any company and this place does not care for the quality employees....only if you are a nurse or doctor MAYBE! Everyone else is expendable. Without those expendable employees the doctors and nurses could not do their own job...TEAMWORK!  This place has forgotten all about how to be a team. It is about how much $$$ the CEO and Admin can put in their pockets. We have lost a great deal of quality employees due to the political scene at NMMC.

Unsafe patient to staff ratios.. no yearly raises.. orientation times are very short and you are thrown on the floor with little training.. constantly wanting staff to work on off days because they don’t have enough staff.. turn over incredibly high… yearly raises were took away in 2021.. no way to increase your pay unless you submit a whole book/binder full of proof you deserve it by gaining “points” in various categories and you can still be denied if they feel your proof isn’t good enough.
