What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
While the mission of the organization is important, the internal environment leaves much to be desired. It often feels like only corporate staff are secure and valued, while those on the front lines deal with unclear expectations, low morale, and little support. The downtown front desk manager, in particular, is extremely difficult to work with and often comes across as rude and dismissive. Unfortunately, these types of leadership issues are not uncommon across the organization. Overall, not a sustainable or healthy work environment for long-term growth.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work culture is often disorganized and lacks clear communication across departments. There's a noticeable disconnect between frontline staff and upper management, with corporate positions feeling far more secure and supported. Gossip and unprofessional behavior are common, which creates a tense and sometimes toxic environment. Leadership can be inconsistent, and some managers are difficult to work with, contributing to low morale. Overall, the culture feels more focused on hierarchy and control than collaboration or employee development.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You’re juggling walk-ins, a list of clients to assist, and tasks from other departments — some of which typically require months of training. You're expected to handle complex issues quickly, while working with little support or access to direct guidance. Communication with key departments is restricted, which makes things worse. If you don’t know an answer, you're expected to use the company’s internal system to search for it — even while someone is waiting in front of you. The pace is fast, the expectations are high, and the tools to succeed are minimal.

This job is not worth the low pay. The stress, lack of training, and poor management make it unsustainable long term.

Nan McKay and Associates was, by far, the most challenging and poorly managed workplace I have ever experienced. I was hired as the Supervisor for Special Programs, yet I was never given the opportunity to actually supervise my team. Instead, multiple managers micromanaged them directly, which undermined my role and created confusion and frustration.

Rather than allowing me to build relationships and lead my team, I was repeatedly assigned Housing Specialist duties. When concerns were brought to me about team communication, I was not allowed to address them. Some staff members would bypass my direction entirely and go straight to upper management, who would then tell them they didn’t need to follow my instructions. This made it impossible to establish authority or consistency.

There was also a noticeable lack of respect from Directors and Managers. At one point, a Director implied I was “partying with staff,” which was untrue, inappropriate, and unprofessional. The comment felt targeted and carried undertones that made me extremely uncomfortable.

The turnover speaks for itself — every Supervisor hired during my time there eventually quit. The workload was overwhelming, roles were unclear, and responsibilities were constantly shifted downward. Supervisors were doing Housing Specialist work, Managers were doing Supervisor work, and operations were completely misaligned.

Upper management frequently spoke negatively about clerks, Housing Specialists, and Supervisors in Teams in front of staff, creating a toxic environment. My manager often held long personal conversations at his desk in front of staff, yet still insisted that employees “weren’t doing enough,” despite everyone working nonstop.

The culture was defined by heavy micromanagement, inconsistent staffing decisions, and an emphasis on termination rather than support or development. The combination of high workload, low pay, poor communication, and minimal support made this job extremely stressful and unsustainable.

I would not recommend working there at all. 

I worked at Nan McKay & Associates in Miami, and my experience was largely shaped by poor management and a lack of accountability.

There was a constant cycle of hiring and turnover, which created an unstable environment. New employees were often trained by others with only a month or two of experience, leading to inconsistent processes and widespread confusion. Instead of addressing these gaps, management frequently pushed for speed over accuracy, resulting in avoidable errors.

Rather than improving training or internal systems, leadership often blamed frontline staff—many of whom were set up to fail due to the lack of structure and support.

What stood out most was how the work was approached. Despite dealing with Section 8 housing, which is fundamentally a social service, management often treated operations like a high-volume business focused on metrics rather than people. There was little emphasis on properly guiding renters or property owners, and communication was often unclear or insufficient. In some cases, issues appeared to stem from internal mistakes or lack of clarity, yet the consequences were passed on to tenants or landlords.

From my perspective, these systemic problems contributed to the loss of the Section 8 contract in Miami. Given the ongoing issues with leadership, training, and accountability, this outcome was not surprising.

Overall, this was a disorganized and frustrating workplace that would benefit from stronger leadership, better training, and a more service-oriented approach to the communities it supports.

Nan McKay is a rare company in the American corporate world these days. They actively strive to pull their candidates from a diverse pool of applicants and they try to treat everyone as fairly as possible. These days, too many employers in America use the poor economy as an excuse to abuse and exploit job seekers. If you are lucky enough to be hired here and go in with a positive attitude and and honest desire to do your best, you will find one of the most caring, supportive workplaces ever. They believe in allowing their employees chances to better themselves and genuinely care about the employee as a person. I learned a lot of valuable skills here and brushed up on a few others as well. The one major downside that I've found is that it may take a while to either be promoted to certain positions in the company or to be scheduled for certain tests, but overall it is a great company. I can safely say that this is one of the jobs that I've liked the most as an adult.

If you liked cliques in middle schools you’ll be perfectly satisfied here. Upper management is rude, vindictive and abrasive. They’ll make sure you know how replaceable you are. The rumor mill here moves constantly and the smallest thing you do could have you being made fun of, cursed at or ridiculed even by managers. HR isn’t at the building and reaching out to them has actually resulted in corrective action for some people as management didn’t appreciate staff talking about what goes on here. If you speak up about anything then you have a target on your back. Favoritism is rampant and staff are unfairly targeted if management decides they don’t like them. There is no accountability and team leads can blame their staff for shortcomings. Honestly one of the worst places I have ever worked.

Your free time trying to find a way out and once you put your two weeks in they’ll make it the most miserable two weeks of your life, that’s why most people just walk out.

The Best Part was being able to Help people who really needed Housing get their vouchers and understand  the process and commitment to finding their place to live

The most Stressful part about working for the company was the supervisor who was in charge and her work ethics to her employers  other than that it would of been a great position to stay in and advance in I had no other issues other than the supervisor picking on me

The environment is a fast paced one but it was rewarding to be able to help the public be aware of the housing vouchers and the steps to ensuring they can find a place to stay I truly loved the position

Typical Day was making Appojtments with clients to come review the class on how to receive their housing voucher and explaining the requirements they need to meet and presenting them with their housing voucher

I worked at nan McKay for about a week, I left my previous employer with hopes of being able to settle into nan McKay and be able to eventually move to a better position however that was not the case. first of all the "call center" is a group of 6 individuals in a corner of the office. The job has NO TRAINING whats so ever and yet youre expected to pass a Miami Dade county housing test by your 90th day. I should have known something was going to be wrong when I did not have to do a drug test and seems that 24hrs was a very short amount of time for a background check to return with accurate results. nonetheless I took the job, I had to shadow an employee for 4 days before the new manager (she had recently started working there) decided that I was ready to begin taking phone calls. after about my 6th day, I noticed she was being rude to her employees and personally did a few things to me that I do not wish to discuss on this review however it was enough for me to resign immediately from the position.

If you are not management, you are disposable. Supervisors are encouraged to abuse their staff. Their learn on the fly method of training has much to be desired of. If you even remotely catch on to what you are supposed to be doing, they drop a thousand files in your lap. If you manage to keep up with that, the reward for doing your work, is doing someone else's. You would think we were union here, we aren't. They are real quick to burn out great employees and there is no real punishment for being a bad one. They fix you with ridiculous goals and then when you can't meet them, they write you up citing that you just can organize to do the job. As if you were the failure to begin with, not that we literally cannot do the job if the tenants do not supply us with the required information. The office culture is literally pitting people against each other. It turns everyday into a tattle festival. It's honestly so toxic, but most of us cannot afford to not have a job, so it's suffer and not be homeless or speak your truth and get walked out the door.

Seriously. Don't even waste your time applying for any job here, much less working here. It is a unprofessional and toxic work environment with many many unhappy employees due to bad management, disorganization and things changing daily.  The managers are disrespectful and petty to the employees.  They have no problem firing people left and right.  The employees are all overworked, overqualified and underpaid.  The job description on Indeed does not match the actual work you will be doing. Very misleading, confusing and short interviews let you know that they will literally hire anyone.  Indeed says it requires a bachelor's degree, it does NOT. Managers hire their friends and literally just anyone. There wasn't anything enjoyable about the job other than the few coworkers I did develop a friendship with. You have to be careful who you say things to and who might be eavesdropping on the other side of the door here thats for sure.  THE most unprofessional place I've ever worked. My few months here seem like a fever dream now. Employee beware!

NMA has a lot of different opportunities for people at different stages in their careers. The company is growing rapidly is always looking to improve. Yes, they may still be trying to get out of the small business mindset but there are great people that work here and if you apply yourself, you will reap the rewards. As someone who started off their career at NMA, I learned so much about how to be a professional and how to respond to a variety of problems. NMA tries their best to train you on all the regulations required for their project. Most of the leadership are very supportive of their staff and want them to succeed and grow. This company often promotes from within and welcomes staff who may want to switch from one department and/or project to another. Of course, this is more of a niche industry being related to public housing experience, but you can get exposed to a lot of different concepts and develop many skills. If you put some solid effort here, you are likely to go far.
