Nashville General Hospital at Meharry

I worked here for a grand total of 5 months. Upon being hired, I was not properly trained to be able to do my job in the pharmacy because A. Nobody seems to have time to properly train B. When training does occur, each person involved has a different way of doing things so the process becomes confusing as to what is right and what is wrong. Also, be prepared to be written up if you make any mistakes at all by the lead pharmacy tech. I was constantly on the defensive after a while because it seemed like every move I made would be wrong or not in the manner of how whomever was in charge that day wanted the task completed. Eventually, the hospital somehow came to the conclusion that "I was not a good fit" and they didn't really need a legit reason to fire me because it was during the probationary period. One person even accused me of forgery but would not give me a chance to see what I supposedly forged and the person in HR didn't even seem to know what I was written up for anyway. Ultimately, if you decide to work for this organization, at least in the pharmacy, you better be very careful in your actions because you will not last long if you don't learn and adapt to each pharmacists way of doing things, along with a lead tech that feels like she is basically God and even wrote up a pharmacist for not doing her job. I don't see how that could happen because a tech has little to know knowledge of how to do a pharmacist's job to begin with.

The process of staff allocation within the hospital appears to be influenced by subjective preferences by management. 
Being agency staff in the hospital contradicts the equitable treatment of both agency and in-house personnel in terms of scheduling. This discrepancy is shocking given that agency staff receive higher pay and possess the autonomy to set their schedules, which does not make sense.

The primary incentive to work at the hospital would seemingly be the benefits offered; however, it may not be advisable to invest time in an organization that compensates its employees inadequately. 


The pay wages provided are not realistic to sustain living expenses in Davidson county, contributing to being short staffed. 


This hospital mainly takes in homeless & those without insurance.  This is not a place you would send yourself or your loved one.

Work through Agencies! 


A typical day at work would be either doing the whole hospital or two floors as a EVS tech. I learned that the management isn't concerned for the employees but for themselves. The workplace culture is so bad that the management doesn't want employees to get along. Wants everyone to snitch on each other.  The most enjoyable part of the job is that some employees do get along won't snitch and makes the job fun . When you have a doctor's appointment, the management refused to let you go but let's everyone else have their doctor's appointment 

This is a culturally diverse environment.  It is a teaching institution so learning opportunities were vast.  However, often times working with residents, the nurses were put in a bad position.  The residents frequently think they are "right" as they are "doctors".  However, the nurses are very knowledgeable in their field of expertise. This allowed the nurse to be held accountable for what the residents did or didn't do.  The Physicians are very supportive of nursing.  There was constant turnover of upper management positions causing policies and rules to be changed frequently.  As a nurse, you go to work each day wondering if you will have a job tomorrow.

Prior to leaving the interim pharmacy director was escorted of the premises. A volunteer interim director was replaced by a newly graduated pharmacist with less experience and training. Upper management applauded movement of clinical services, but it was to the detriment of inpatient pharmacy since staffing was not adequate. I was transferred departments without my knowledge or consent which is against hospital policy. It was a department without direction and upper management allowed preferred individuals to perform as they saw fit. Growth protentional based on likeability not pharmacy abilities.

Nashville General from a maintenance standpoint is a old hospital that is short staffed with poor management. The obvious recent and continued turnover rate of newly and long term employees should be a clear indicator that this is not the fit for anyone who takes pride in their work or believes that hard work deserves fair rewards and respect. I was not fired or forced to resigned, rather after having spent 30 years in the field of maintenance and knowing what a good company looks like - after only ten months at Nashville General, it was clear that it wasn’t worth my time fighting a useless battle. 

Unless you're a nurse, this hospital will work you to death and refuse to pay you fairly. There is no communication between departments or even within departments. It is basically impossible to get fired, which leaves the hospital full of not-so-good employees. After years of working here, I have only seen it get worse. They do not care about their employees or the patients. The lab is seriously suffering and has a horrible director that doesn't even try to fix any of the problems. With a better lab director, I think the lab would be much better.

Work-life balance at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry is productive and fun place to work. As a Nurse,  you workdd your 3 12 hour shifts / week with flexible scheduling.

Pay & benefits
My pay and benefits at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry are Fair and reasonable. Pay was negotiable upon hire pending years of experience.

Culture
Collaboration with my colleagues at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry is Great. You felt like apart of the family. Employee make an effort to greet you even when walking down the hallway. Environment and culture of the hospital was warm and inviting.

Toxic organizational culture. Bullying, targeting & retaliation condoned by several senior leadership including CEO/CNO. A few good leaders are there but many are afraid to speak up. Hospital Board doesn’t interact enough with middle management and staff to give a platform to share their concerns. Worst hospital I’ve ever worked. Low quality patient care but senior leaders practice a culture of hiding safety concerns to avoid dealing with actions and accountability needed to actually improve patient care. 

Management  curses at employees and makes threatening remarks regarding job security. If you ask questions it is considered as a complaint. Managers don't know how to do her job so will put work off on anybody who will do it and take your credit. Office manager thinks she is in high authority of the Registered Nurses. Doctors have temper tantrums ,very unprofessional work environment. Nobody cares what is going on wrong.
