As a former ER nurse, I would never recommend anyone who value their license to work there.  The managers are there for their bonuses and paycheck not for the growth of the employees. There are no standards and anything goes until something happens and you are penalized without progressive discipline or correction just straight suspension, fired or loss your contract.   
Work culture is terrible. Managers don't take responsibility for their poor management , instead blames the nurses and are very disrespectful.  This behavior is sweep under the carpet by administration and HR.
Your vacation time will not be granted no matter how many times you request it , unless you've worked there for over 6 years. The senior nurses take up most of the vacation time periods every week not allowing others to take vaction. I've worked there for over 3 years and never had a vacation time approved.  
There are no opportunities for growth. The way the ER is runned is  very chaotic. Very unorganized. You will be over worked and underpaid.  Staffing is always short. Nurse to patient ratio can go up to one nurse to 10 to 15 paitents. NUMC rely heavily on  travel nurses to function.  Nursing retention is POOR!
The nursing staffs are very nice to work with despite the poor management and unorganized ER. 



NUMC is a great first stepping stone to becoming a therapist. Linda Walsh, director of recreation keeps her staff moving from floor to floor, never staying on one unit for more then 7 months - which provides a new therapist with many new experiences and the chance to constantly be surrounded by new practitioners.
Starting out right out of school and only having art therapy experience as an Intern, I was able to move around the hospital, work with many different people and really find out which populations I enjoyed. I also had the opportunity to work with social workers, CASAC's, nurses and other hospital employees from various backgrounds that led me to learn interview strategies, group practices and confrontational steps that I now incorporate in my own daily practice!
As great of a first step as NUMC is, it's really a first step kind of place. Knowing what I now know from being in the field, I'd like to further my own education, gain certifications and really sink my feet into one unit to make a continual difference, especially to those that rotate through the door every few months!

The staff have alot of potential and alot of talent in what they do jut management doesn't give them the opportunity and boost that they need for the job to make them at least feel appreciated but says things like "it is what it is" which is a sorry excuse for being in management. Every time employees voice out their opinion it is met with retaliation and the employees feel like there isn't any point protesting assignments or going to the union for help since the union just tells you " it happens all the time" which is a sorry excuse to give to be honest. We pay good chunk of money to get the union to do something not brush off concerns. The nurses are expected to do everything in the unit that they can't even do their main job which is taking care of patients. The doctors are overwhelmed due to crazy work hours and patient load and not enough ancillary staff to help.

I am very glad I chose A Holly Patterson for my social work internship. I was able to gain a lot of skills in case management, learned a lot on Medicad and Medicare. A typical day would be learning, meeting different clients, completing a psychosocial assessment, doing unit rounds, checking in with the head nurse to make sure their is no issues going on with the clients. I also get to participate in staff meetings, care plan meetings where we discuss the well being of each client as an interdisciplinary team. The most enjoyable part of the job as an intern is learning about a new client and completing a full psychosocial on them. The hardest part of the job is working with a client who is not coorportive in his/her care plans.

What is the best part of working at the company?
We worked together and supported one another. It was a great team effort to care for our patients.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When preparing for JACHO to make sure everything was prepared also when preparing for different disasters .

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment was one of team work unity , we were expected to be professional and courteous to the patients and families. To get our work done in a timely manner, management was helpful in keeping the team together.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day consisted of keeping things in order and dealing with the patients and family needs , I was the first person to meet once they arrived on the unit.

Enjoyed helping others for a living. The milti team approach to the betterment of the patients was interesting and educational. There were Psychiatrist, psychologist, medical doctors, social workers, nursing and PCAs which contributed to the multi disciplinary approach to treatment, so it was great learning all the aspects of all the disciplines.My coworkers were mostly personable and team players. The hardest part of the job was occasionally the limitations with a referral for continued treatment. The best part was a patients sucess.

• Clinician, acute patient rehabilitation unit 
• Administer evaluations, develop treatment plans and conduct therapy for patients with dysphagia, dysarthria, apraxia, aphasia, cognitive disorders and traumatic brain injury 
• Comprehensive knowledge of Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) and perform bedside swallow evaluations
• Recommend appropriate diets with multidisciplinary approach to assure compliance for appropriate diet, textures and consistencies
• Counsel patients and families on plan of care
• Participate in weekly team meetings to develop individualized treatment approach 
• Provide coverage to the inpatient acute care units to administer dysphagia evaluations

Worked there for several years. They move incompetent and nasty people and managers to different areas frequently when they treat others poorly and just don't do their job. Many bullies in the workplace. They can't be fired cause they are all unionized, including upper management. This perpetuates an uncaring and lazy culture. There are some really good and caring people, but the rest of the people (especially management), make it hard for those who really care about doing their best.

They keep changing their name but that does not change the culture.

With the various job I've had I realized they were all connected.
 Meaning I had to deal with all kinds of people, This may have been my employer a person in need or a family member. I realized no matter what my tittle was It was still all customer service. With great customer service and a ambitious attitude you can go very far. I've enjoyed my different work experiences because I loved what I do and working with people. Coming to work positive and knowing that today I may make a difference in someone else life no matter how small is rewarding to me.At times work can become a bit stressful and over whelming but again I keep a positive attitude.

I worked so many assignments in New York Florida and Texas I have been to so many facilities my greatest Personal accomplishments my learning experiences and sharing between doctors nurses and ancillary staff to not only keep someone alive by to make sure that they would have a quality of life I cannot say enough about  NUMC Out of every hospital I work whatever state it was in my happiest days my most fulfilled days Were there. I wish I had not aged out of the system or else I would work there until I pass from this life  into  another.
