National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

As the volunteer coordinator, I was responsible to train and mentor volunteers to assist in the office, at fundraising events and in the community with education programs.  I was proud to be a part of this awareness in our community.  The mission is crucial now more than ever. The Internet has made it a challenging world in relation to the safety of children.
The best part of my job was working with our dedicated volunteers! I made sure to recognize and appreciate each volunteer. I also enjoyed mentoring the high school and college students. Never a dull moment in our office.  My co-workers and I worked hard, but always managed to keep the office upbeat.
The hardest part of the job was hearing about another abduction, exploitation or murder of an innocent child. But with education programs and community awareness events, I know we were making a difference in the lives of children.  And isn't that a great way to feel about your job?!

While the rest of the agency appears well run, my experience with the Call Center was unfortunately very negative. I learned a great deal during my time of employment through day to day operations and experience gained as a result. My main issues lie with management as they were very unwilling to work with employees experiencing any hardship outside of the workplace. Consideration in regards to shift assignment were flawed, and requests for change were often ignored. Management rules with an iron fist and any questioning of how things are run resulted in employees being "blacklisted" from volunteering for overtime shifts when offered. Some employees are considered favorites and were allowed to get away with almost anything, while others were clearly disliked. I experienced immense stress and anxiety that had nothing to do with the nature of the job, but because of the individuals who manage the call center.

I loved working here more than any job I had before, but I left due to the workplace culture. I wish I had done more to keep it, but the feeling of hostility, passive aggression, and the lack of support created isolation and discouragement. Even now, I feel uncomfortable saying too much on the subject. The other cons weren’t great, but they were probably the least of my problems and manageable. The work is tough enough that leaving for the reasons I did was just sad. I sure hope it changes. 

Working at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is a meaningful and challenging experience. The work is mission-driven and requires a high level of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail. The role offers exposure to complex issues, opportunities to develop analytical and operational skills, and collaboration with dedicated colleagues who are deeply committed to child protection. While the work can be emotionally demanding, the organization provides a structured environment and emphasizes accuracy, responsibility, and impact. Overall, it is a valuable experience for those interested in public service, research, or justice-oriented careers.

NCMEC's mission and purpose are AMAZING. But staff are highly overworked and underpaid. Caseloads range from 80-120 cases. Stressful job with no work life balance. On call occurs way too often. Upper management is not supportive and NCMEC is very cliquish. I have been with the organization for a while now, and have not received a raise. 

If you are looking to support a great cause and mission and do not care about low wages, high stress, and often being in stressful work situations then this is the place for you.

There is definitely room for improvement in the working atmosphere, which has become less people oriented and more about it's bottom line.  Also many bad decisions have been made by management that has adversely affected the lives of many employees.  This once was a very pleasant and family oriented place to work, but over the years and changes of managerial personnel, that has become a thing of the past.

NCMEC was a great non-profit to work for. Not only is the mission one to be passionate about, but management cares for their employees and they truly do their best to ensure a work/life balance. The only thing I would have liked to see was more inner organization advancement for those with experience vs. degree. I was working towards my degree, but was limited as far as advancement despite my knowledge of the organization itself.

NCMEC could be a better place to work if they lived up to what they actually said. Upon hire, they give you the idea that there are many opportunities for growth and that they do not condone cliques. These two situations could not be any further from the truth. Other individuals have the ability to block you from growing but put on a show as if they care. For the amount of work that we do and the content that we deal with, this company is not worth the hassle. 

The work itself can be rewarding, but the amount doled out to each person would be impossible to accomplish with even an 80 hour workweek. There are no protocols for employee training, and even the management seems unclear on what they actually want done. If you have a question about anything, the answer will always depend on who you ask (and you'll rarely get the same answer twice). The pay is about half of what others in the field are earning, and the burnout rate is high. Promotions don't happen often.

The job is amazingly fulfilling. The majority  of the people were not only committed to the cause but helpful. The main issue is the type of management at the upper levels who terminate without cause or explanation. Being told that your work ethic and work product was outstanding but that they had to terminate my employment was disheartening. Then being told that they didn’t have to tell me was indicative of some back room deal that had zero to do with the job  no positive recommendation from me
