National General Insurance

Rules and management changes daily. Bait and switch company. Told us one thing when we were all interviewed and hired and then changed everything 2 months down the line. Never know what they are doing next. They do not believe in keeping promises made. Management a good ole boys network that hangs out at the bar every night after work. Accounting sucks. Although they have pay trackers, they are not accurate and when you get your check it doesn't show exactly what you are paid on or for in detail. The pay structure makes it impossible for you to calculate your own take home pay and when management makes a mistake in your pay, which happens often, they take it back out of your check and you have know real way of keeping up with the numbers you have been paid by. Unstable, management acts like kids throwing balls around the office without regard to employee safety and they want you to participate in this "Cult" culture that was discussed in one of our meetings in a call center invironment where people are up on there feet high fiving and running to hit the bell, while you are on the phone with clients trying to meet individual needs and concentrate on the client with all the noise and activity going on around you. They take away your voicemail but expect you to develop relationships with your customers in developing report. So if you spent an hour building a 3000.00 policy and the client needs to go to the bank to put the money in and call you back, they will call back and if your on the phone (which you will be since it is a call center) the call goes to the next available agent who just has to take a credit card and make the sale and take the credit and commission. The other downfall is a client calls back to speak to someone he already spoke with and gets you and refuses to talk to you, the call counts against you in your pay.

You also get tones of customer service calls that have nothing to do with sales that should not come to the sales floor, some actually directly from customer service agents who call up to ask questions and these calls count against you, your percentage, and your pay.

With this mentality they are going to an all commission pay structure that they call points. Sounds like every decision they make is at the bar.

Supervisors are talking to Accountant about how sales agents and what sales agent pay structure should look like when they have no accounting background or experience otherwise in deciding pay and salary. Then they hope the management they hang out with at the bar will sign off on it.

Not family friendly. They give you days off in one area then later down the line take them back out of your check after they have been approved in the system.

Every supervisor has there own set of rules so if they tell you it's ok to do something you had better get them to sign off on it as it could be your tail.

Their computer system doesn't work. You have dozens of screens with some programs that don't work but yet they keep telling you to use them. You have to repeatedly put information in on several screens to get paid. The systems they have created and approved for use will sometimes disappear in the middle of a quote or just won't work at all but they insist on using these systems.

Unless you are desparate, it's not worth the headache. Never worked for such a disorganized organization. They use the fact that they have been around since 1939, but it is not owned by the same people nor is it the same management. Has changed management at least 2-3 times since February of 2012 and it is now November. Can't keep up.

Above all in the beginning we were told that employees come first but in the real of things their is no real sincere regard for employees unless you are in with the part of management that hangs out at the bar. In that regard, they cover each other.

I worked in CV which had lost a lot due to claims activity and created stricter Underwriting guidelines soon after I started. A lot of business was lost due to Underwriting Cancels and Non-Renewals as a result of these changes. People would call in to ask why their insurance policy was cancelled regularly and ask if there was any way they could be reinstated. Usually they found out at the last minute as their Agents wouldn’t want to tell them, so they were desperate to find coverage in states where insurance is required.

Mid-cycle Rate increases without warning were also very common in this department, especially for businesses that required a DOT # or MC number. Imagine a customer being on auto-pay, renewing for a $2,000/mo policy and suddenly their payment jumps to $9,000/mo or more. People were livid and there was nothing you could do, other than tell them they should’ve known to log into their account before the monthly draft so they could see the increase. Otherwise, there was no real communication and certainly not in a timely manner so they could prepare and get other rate quotes before accepting the increase.

If a vehicle was totaled, there was no internal process to remove the vehicle after the claim was completely processed. The customer would wait months for the claims process to complete and then suddenly they’d have an inordinate charge on their bill for insuring a salvage vehicle. And yes, they would go back to the day after the claim and charge the customer for the several months or more that it was still on the policy, ALL IN ONE LUMP SUM. Again, customers would be livid and leadership could care less.

Work culture was very hit or miss. Most people, once working there awhile had deadened themselves to customers reactions and had gotten used to saying no and Telling the bad news without any empathy or feeling. Instead a lot of the people who had been there years or were in a leadership position, were in the habit of believing all customers are bad or wrong. They never thought the company was wrong and were quick to judge the customer, often calling them liars and acting indifferent when they couldn’t afford to pay or would have an insurance lapse or even if they had duplicate coverage due to a lapse in their Agent notifying us timely of a cancellation request. Basically overcharging was the norm and OK with the company because it made them more money and the company couldn’t care less about people trying to save money...in fact, customers were looked at as evil “rate evaders” when they were just trying to make ends meet. Very hypocritical.

As far as trying to make the work environment fun, leadership would schedule time Off the phones for “training” and reps would go in a conference room to play games and chit chat. Meanwhile the call queues would stay high for other reps stuck on the phones. 

There were also a lot of people asked to go home early pretty regularly due to lack of call volume, so they would not get their 40hrs regularly. It seemed as though certain reps were offered to leave early much more than others. 

Pro: If you can harden yourself to not care about others this would be a good fit for a long-term career option.

Con: On the other hand, calls are scored on ability to empathize with and be friendly and understanding with the customer. This seems completely at odds with all the company stands for, listed above. Good Luck!


No work/life balance. They play favorites. Over worked and underpayed. Some of the other employees treat you like their personal assistant and expect you to do everything for them, even the things they can do themselves. Oh and the claims department, they can be so incredibly lazy and rude. They basically make you be the mediator between them and the customer because they don't want to help them if they aren't assigned to that claim and if you tell them you will not assist the customer since it's not your job (if the customer won't take no for an answer) they will finally come to the front and be so rude to the customer all because they had to do their job. As a person with compassion, its no fun looking a customer in the eye to tell them you are sorry that no one there wants to do their job to help them during their time of need. And when you bring it to a managers attention, they say they have no control over that department. Well my suggestion is you should probably get people in there who will do their job then. You are literally EXPECTED to do everything. The vacation time is used for sick time, vacation, or any time you are out of work and if you miss work, they write you up even with a Dr note because the time you are out is considered unexcused. Basically if you are going to be sick make sure you give them a few days notice to avoid getting in any trouble. They treat you different when you miss any work for any reason, except for the people they like. Those people can miss days or even weeks at a time and they are totally fine with it. They talk about you when you aren't in the office and I know that for a fact because someone foolishly left a conversation on my computer when I was out sick. If you go to the manager with a problem, it doesnt get handled. I have been told I need to "stop being so Blunt" but then they turn around and say "I need to be more firm with the customers and not let them walk on me" all because I asked someone to do their job because I didn't like being put in the middle of a customer and the person who is supposed to be doing their job to help the customer. They make you feel unimportant and unappreciated. They give a shout out to the agents and the claims department for making their business successful but what about the accountants and the receptionist who make that place run smoothly and deal with all the upset, angry customers. This company is a joke and total waste of time. I regret ever working for them. Its a headache, draining, and exhausting. I personally think the stress of the job, literally made me sick. So glad I am no longer there!

Review of National General Insurance Company (An Allstate Company)

While National General Insurance does offer some benefits, such as covering the cost of licensing and providing a work-from-home opportunity, my overall experience with the company was disappointing due to a number of fundamental issues with management, performance expectations, and workplace culture.

Pros:
	•	The company covers the cost of insurance licensing, which is a financial benefit for new hires.
	•	Remote work opportunities provide flexibility.

Cons:
	•	Toxic Management Culture: Once out of training, management frequently emphasized various ways employees could be terminated rather than fostering a supportive and growth-oriented work environment. This approach created an atmosphere of fear rather than motivation.
	•	Unreasonable Performance Expectations: Even with near-perfect Quality Assurance (QA) scores, employees are often placed on Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) immediately after training. This practice undermines employee morale and suggests a predetermined intent to push employees out rather than develop their skills.
	•	Ineffective Coaching & Development: Coaching sessions provided little to no actionable guidance for improving sales performance. Feedback was often focused on minor, nitpicky details rather than strategies to help agents successfully close deals.
	•	Lack of Transparency & Control: The company maintains complete control over call routing, queues, and the types of calls assigned to agents, limiting their ability to succeed and directly impacting commission opportunities.
	•	Non-Competitive Compensation & Unfavorable Hours: The hourly wage is not competitive with industry standards, and scheduling is not conducive to work-life balance.
	•	Bait-and-Switch Hiring Practices: Upon hiring, I was provided with one expectation regarding my schedule, only to have it changed immediately after training, demonstrating a lack of honesty and consistency in their hiring process.

Overall Impression:

While National General provides the foundational resources to obtain licensing and enter the insurance industry, their management practices, performance policies, and lack of employee support create an unsatisfactory work environment. Employees are placed under unnecessary stress with unrealistic expectations, ineffective coaching, and little opportunity for success. I would not recommend this company to individuals seeking a stable and growth-oriented career in insurance.

The training environment can be discouraging due to inconsistent guidance and a lack of standardized instruction. Agents are expected to be compliant and deliver smooth, high-quality calls, yet scripts are not always fully embedded or consistently reinforced during training. This makes it difficult for new agents to clearly understand expectations, especially while they are still learning and building confidence.
When a class has more than one trainer, guidance is not always aligned. Conflicting instructions and visible disagreements between trainers create confusion for agents, who are then left unsure which direction to follow. This inconsistency directly impacts performance and confidence during the learning phase.
Additionally, there have been instances where a trainer appeared to make fun of one employee in front of others. This behavior is unprofessional and negatively affects morale, trust, and psychological safety in the classroom. A training environment should be supportive, respectful, and focused on helping all agents succeed—not discouraging or humiliating them.
Effort and progress during training are not always acknowledged equally, which further impacts motivation and confidence. Agents cannot be expected to perform at a professional level overnight. Everyone learns at a different pace—some faster, some slower—and training should account for those differences.
If compliance and call quality are priorities, scripts should be clearly embedded, standardized, and consistently reinforced throughout training. Expectations around call flow, conciseness, and compliance should be clearly defined. Trainers should be aligned before delivering guidance to ensure agents are not impacted by internal inconsistencies. A more supportive, respectful, and consistent training approach would significantly improve agent confidence, compliance, and overall performance.

Typical day is processing homeowners policies. Training was a joke and there are never straight answers. Basically figured it out myself. I learned how to bite my tongue and that nothing you say or do matters. I honestly don’t think management cares if you do your job correct just as long as you suck up to them. Brown nosing allows you to do sloppy work and make mistakes. One associate will make 10 mistakes to your one and just get a slap on the hand when you get a QC for it. A very unfair environment. The best part of this company is working remote. Management at first puts on a good show but if you’re not into degrading yourself to a brown nosing then you aren’t part of the cliche. You Will be treated with disrespect and disregarded of your hard work. Promotions are far and few, if busting your butt and meeting quality and production every month and picking up every extra task asked of you and then lied to and let down on the empty promises of advancing then this place is for you. Such a shame because it is not bad work. I have tried to transfer departments for a year and a half on numerous accounts with no luck. The same no followup Just a standard email from HR saying sorry try again. Management lies and keeps you in the dark about team work. When you try to transfer to another department management will retaliate and take special projects from you and boot you down. Pay is menial compared to others in the industry. Benefits are pretty good but NO Christmas bonuses or incentives. Raises are yearly and left up to management what % you get. But only cents on the hour. Once again not based on your performance but how much butt kissing. If you enjoy kissing butt and making mistakes then you will be managements golden child. Hirer ups have no clue what goes on on the bottom, it is a cut throat environment. Hardest part about the job is getting along with the fake team mates that behind your back are trying to take you down instead of helping each other. The most enjoyable part of my day is clock out and knowing I do a good job and when you work a policy correctly. 

This place is a mess.. where to begin???

They claim to be a growing company but nothing more than a call center who is looking for ways to nickel and dime people out of commission.  Incompetent trainers (and I mean incompetent; guy says "like" every 3rd word and stares at the wall) who race you through training and wonder why you are lost in class.  Then has the nerve to get upset at you if you ask a question!

Management is just as clueless.  They do nothing all day but stand around in groups and BS with each other... it's the good old boys club.  They force you to work OT and give you a very complicated process to sell policies with. If you do not follow it to a T, you lose commission and then, you guessed it, you get fired.

They also have a very complicated array of software that they do not fully train you on (see above) and instead throw you into and tell you to sell with it.  This is all in the middle of a sales floor with people shouting and you unable to hear yourself think.  

There is also micromanaging galore!  You have to check with management on everything.  You cannot sell an RV by itself and you have to check with management to be off the phone to call someone back, etc.  In many ways this place was a gigantic bait and switch.  I was told when I was hired my desk had an "entrepreneur" way to be handled but the micromanaging began right away.  Oh, then I was going to be paid a percentage of the premium as my commission?  After I began, that turned out to be $25 a policy!  What a joke...!

Here is the real kicker:  When you leave the company, they cancel your benefits THE DAY YOU LEAVE!  No matter if you quit or fired, they cut them off.  No matter if you already paid for them, they just hope you don't notice.  I had to call them and tell them to either cover two claims or give me the money back.  They of course said they would do the latter and when I checked my account, they gave me a few bucks back instead of the entire amount.  I am still going after them for the rest.  Talk about a cheap company...!

They are a joke... stay far away from them!

There is an amazing opportunity for advancement with National General Insurance Company. At the same time, as a Claims Adjuster, you have to be humble and have really thick skin to make it happen. You are going to have handle death, dishonesty, extremely long hours, moral ambiguity, never ending phone calls, and a ton of screaming. Also, your life and your family will be threatened on a semi-regular basis. Luckily, your immediate manager and co-workers will be supportive and sympathetic. I can promise that you will work with some of the best people you've ever met in your life at NGIC. You will be eligible for a bonus and a raise every year based on performance. Every manager will be willing to mentor you to move forward . If you can complete the training and do this job for at least 2 years, you can accomplish anything. 

Unfortunately, the top-level management is a dreadful collection of  sycophants, and weirdos. They are willfully oblivious to the day-to-day requirements of the claims department and there is a "work 'em until they quit" mentality that permeates every aspect of their decision making. The owner of the company will occasionally show up from NYC, scream at employees, and fire them. As long as you're able to avoid eye contact, you'll be safe. Also, the worst part of NGIC on an immediate level is the Human Resources department. Interacting with HR is a bizarre and defeating experience. There's an inside joke about one of the HR reps arriving at 11:30am and leaving at 1:30pm. If you have a question about anything you're better off figuring it out yourself or asking your direct manager (The employee handbook is actually really helpful!). The HR department at NGIC doesn't even actively recruit/interview. They appear to exist as some kind of corporate formality and/or requirement. They have absolutely no impact or quantifiable role in the company other than to hand out sandwiches.

From the initial interview until after you have begun taking sales calls, National General supervisors and management actively engage in dishonesty as a company value. The commission structure (referred to as "incentive") is the worst aspect of the Sales Agent positions, and is a tightly held secret until after you have completed training and are taking calls. In order to earn anything beyond your hourly rate, you have to forfeit an amount in commission equal to your weekly hourly pay and only take home the difference. Example: $15/hr = $600/week, so the first $600 in commission you earn per week just evaporates -- you will never see it. This is the biggest secret held until after it is too late, leading to a lot of turnover.

The goal in selling policies is not to provide the customer with what they are seeking. In fact, if you provide a customer with what they are seeking on a call, supervisors will respond negatively to this. You are actively told that it is not your job to provide the client with the coverage they are seeking, but that your job is to make sure you sell them something they did not intend to purchase when they called. The sales process is deliberately manipulative and seeks to take advantage of clients. 

Above all, this is not an ethical company toward employees or clients. The only real benefit is that you will get your property and casualty licenses paid for in all but three states (plus DC). If you hold a life license when you join the company, you will also have your life licenses paid for in 15 states. If you are looking to expand your licensure, working for National General briefly is and easy way to do it, but do not plan to stay around and make a career out of it. Anywhere that looks to siphon off $30,000+ in commission from you every year is a dead end.

I have been employed with National General Insurance for 11 months to date. I came with no prior experience in claims and currently work as an MD adjuster. The company offered me a $2,500 sign on bonus that is split throughout the year. When hired you will go through a 3 week training. For me all training was virtual with live instructors. The instructors really do care about each student and want to see you succeed. Any questions you have during training will be answered and if you find your self struggling in a specific area they will stay after class to help you through the problem.  
After you pass your training you will have 2 weeks to study for your 6-20 adjuster license. You will then take your state exam.
 In my case I already had my license and started to run claims immediately. Once your assigned to your team and manager your manager will assign a mentor that you will shadow for 2 weeks in which at this time you will have live hands on practice through each claim. 
Once you're on your own you will be assigned claims and be required to run each claim accordingly. 

Being a claims adjuster for National General insurance which was acquired by AllState, can be very challenging at times. This is a very fast paise environment that requires time management, effective communication skills, and the ability to be very organized. You will have assistance at all times if you ever run into any issues or have any questions on making any type of decision in reference to a claim.

The company does encourage work life balance. You are given all the benefits you can think of once employed. Work life balance if encouraged here, but it is up to you to organize your work load to balance out your daily work life.
