Encompass Omaha is an organization that aims to provide support and intervention services, particularly for individuals affected by violence ans who has experienced extreme trauma. While the organization has noble intentions, my personal experience has unfortunately been marked by several significant challenges.

Firstly, there is a notable discrepancy between the organization's stated values and the actual workplace culture. Despite the professed commitment to excellence and teamwork, the environment often felt divisive and lacking in collaboration. Instances of gaslighting, manipulation tactics, and nepotism were observed, contributing to a sense of mistrust among employees.

Moreover, there appeared to be a disconnect between leadership's priorities and the well-being of employees. Instead of fostering a supportive work environment, there was a prevalent focus on individual agendas and egos. This lack of genuine care for employee welfare was concerning and contributed to feelings of disillusionment among staff members. Concerns and personal safety issues that were raised several times during the process of this new organizations development, which is the first of its kind in Nebraksa, were met with hositility and lack of support needed to maintain a healthy and safe working environment for violence intervention workers.

Additionally, the organization's approach to training and support for employees working with individuals from backgrounds of trauma was found to be inadequate. There were instances where data manipulation and dishonesty were observed, undermining the integrity of the organization's work.

In summary, while Encompass Omaha endeavors to fulfill its mission of supporting individuals impacted by violence, my experience suggests there are significant areas for improvement. Addressing issues related to workplace culture, leadership priorities, and employee support and training would be essential steps towards creating a more positive and effective organization.

This review aims to provide an objective assessment of my experiences at Encompass Omaha, without bias or personal animosity. It is my hope that the organization will use this feedback constructively to enact meaningful change and better serve its mission and employees in the future.

I worked at this organization for 20 years and watched it slowly, but consistently decline. I will forever be indebted for the years of diverse experience I received as an employee, but I won't forget how this organization advanced individuals who had no business being in a management position. It is toxic workplace, and unless you are willing to compromise your integrity and commitment to the nursing profession, then you will never be considered for a management position. Putting nurses in dangerous situations by continuously ignoring the unsafe staffing ratios was the final straw. After years of working under these conditions, I made the decision to leave this organization and I have absolutely no regrets. Thank goodness I left before COVID hit, because the conditions my former colleagues were subjected to during that time were abhorrent. Aside all of that, it was very disheartening to watch new nurses come in being offered more money, while administration capped senior nurses pay. Travel nurses brought in making an obscene amount of money, and not paying nurses that had been there for decades was unacceptable. I was a dedicated employee and didn't want to leave what I thought was a fairly decent place to work because I didn't know any better. However, I found that there are much better places to work that treat their nurses with so much more respect! 

The employees that are employed at Nebraska Medicine works very diligently and sacrifices a lot of their personal life to back their teammates up at work. The management and leadership do not recognize this or take it into consideration.

There have been many times when the staff schedule would be wrong, whether employees are on PTO or when a Traveler completes their contract, those employees would still be on the schedule. When the day is going and it gets really busy, our leadership and management team leaves at 3:30 pm no matter what. There have been times when we were left in a bind and as employees and co-workers, we had to make our own plan to get the job done. The next day, there's no remorse from those managers or leaders.

We would bring concerns to management and leadership but all we get "We'll have conversations..." Its more important to perform cases and see a lot of patients even when staff is overworked, understaffed, and lack of resource.

But the employees do such a great job and completing tasks, the results are remarkable and patient satisfaction scores are elevated. Employee satisfaction are low which is a reason for the high turnover.

In the last 3 years, there's been 2 different CEOs, 3 different Chief of Cardiology, Various changes in management, and vast changes with staff.

Culture was an inauthentic, aggressive, meritocracy plagued by office politics. Would rather work where cooperation, joy, and hard-work are valued.   

Pros: 
-Commitment to innovative research and medicine, 
-Loyal and hardworking staff of medical professionals who are dedicated to their patients, 
-Compensation and benefits were continually reevaluated

Cons:
-Goals were unclear & poorly communicated, 
-Little work/life balance for management, 
-Management spent more time in meetings than with units, 
-Consistently understaffed, 
-Little room for feedback & dialogue from frontline staff, 
-Values the voice and education of RNs over other patient care positions (mostly for MAGNET purposes), 
-Outdated, dysfunctional work spaces unless you work in a cash cow specialty area such as cancer, 
-Company has bad habit of focusing on initiative for short period then fizzling out, so no one takes on change with much enthusiasm

When you interview here they will talk a lot about "ITEACH values". When you work for them, these values are nowhere in the actual working experience. Respect for you as a worker, and the good the work you hope to do for any employer, have nothing to do with "meeting productivity" at this employer. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is when you have a clear path to solving a given problem.  The least enjoyable part is finding this path with only about 1 out of 5 problems you will be tasked to resolve.

Learn a lot in a given role when you begin here, staying in the same role will hinder your learning opportunities and ability to be a modest employee who wants nothing more than to learn better ways to solve everyday problems.

Also, before you begin here, suggest you ask about "break times" if you are expecting these, daily.  Suggest you also learn of your personal expectations in the event of a natural disaster, or any other circumstance to working that is "beyond your control".

I generally enjoy working here, the teamwork is amazing and our physicians are professional and compassionate about what they do. The overall culture is inviting and easy to learn and grow in.

We are a multicultural facility and frequently use interpreter services to assist in patient care. This is an important part of our teamwork approach to quality care in a changing world. This facility cares for patients within a multi-state area and is continually growing as we seek to provide the best care available to the people we serve.

The hardest part of my job is working a double or triple booked schedule with multiple procedures and being understaffed. 

My most enjoyable part of the job is when we can see patient satisfaction and know we have done our jobs well, when the patient sees that we truly care for them and do our best to help them. I enjoy when I get to spend time with a patient, listening to their concerns and when I am able to ease their anxiety by giving wholesome care.

I started at Nebraska Medicine as a "patient care tech" on the oncology med-surg unit, in the Buffett Cancer Center. That was a very stressful job, mainly for two reasons: We were short staffed for techs more often than not, and many of the nurses didn't help much with answering their own call lights. Last year I was hired on in the emergency department, which I enjoy so much more! The work load is more manageable, in my opinion. Others can find it very stressful, but not everyone, myself included. The best part of the job is how much I've learned - so much more than I would've imagined! As you gain experience, you have the option to learn to work at the desk some shifts/part of shifts, which brings a lot more responsibility and management skills. I enjoy this, but unfortunately, this does not come with a pay raise. Overall we techs agree we are underpaid, given the workload and medical knowledge and responsibility we take on. So it's not for everyone, but I mostly love it!

Having a typical day at work is fun and fast paced you get to meet new people every time you turn the corner, having the patients felling better and seeing them smile and walk around knowing I may have cleaned the room they are in and they love how clean it is would make me smile tremendously. I learn something new every day like cleaning a different way will make something else way better than I was doing and using a different chemical to clean makes the room 10 times better than it was. When I come into work I love talking with some of the co-workers they make days go by faster and they make it fun also, I have became friends with a lot of co-workers, but best part about my job is knowing I am helping out someone in some way and everyone is doing a great deed for someone else. Patients will come and go everyday and seeing the ones that leave feeling better is all worth everything I ever do to help keep the hospital clean and bacteria free.

This is the most toxic, catty, self-serving group of people I have ever worked with. It’s the biggest hospital in the state and we’re very busy with the most difficult patients, but what makes it unbearable is the employees. If any given person leaves the room, they’re getting trashed by the remaining people. Everyone hates everyone. Teamwork is nonexistent. If there’s a difficult patient on the way from the ER they will literally run and hide, leaving maybe one or two people to deal with it. They drive away anyone who actually works by making every day exhausting, leading to constant turnover and a miserable work environment. And it won’t get better because the people with their mouths to the manager’s.. let’s say… ear… are the worst of them all. I honestly don’t know why these people are in healthcare, or how they all found each other. They’re going to be there forever, though, because nobody else will hire them. They can’t get anyone to vouch for them.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working at UNMC is we/they care about their patients. They go out of their way to ensure that patients needs are met in an immediate way. The management is a well constructed group of people who communicate effectively in order to make sure task are always flowing in the right direction for patient care.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at UNMC was going through the COVID rules and regulations. But when up management figured it out everything was smooth sailing.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is cool, people are quick to help you when you need help. Everyone is nice, and at some point you almost feel like it's a family atmosphere.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day is getting in, getting dressed, and tending to the needs of the patient's.
