New England Cancer Specialists

In the past two years, they've lost a lot of employees. The lack of support, work morale, and bad management have hugely caused people to find other employment. They expect you to put the company ahead of anything else in your life. They will use the well-being of the patient to have you push yourself to the brink. Also, promises of "it will get better" It's been years and the work environment has only gotten worse.

Even before Covid, there were certain departments really understaffed. Management had this view that these departments were not important to enjoy to get another person on. BUT, important enough to have you work overtime and get on your case if you get behind. 

To make up for being understaffed they have a majority of their staff cross train almost everywhere. This doesn't really help as it just leaves their main department more understaffed when helping another. 

They play favorites badly. There are employees that work their butt off, stay late, take up projects that are not part of their job, etc but because they are not the management's favorite, they get the short end of the stick. Lack of favoritism will affect not only possible advancements in the company but also any sort of raise. 

One employee I know has committed to the company for a few years now. When review day came, not only did the new person (who only worked there less than half the time the senior coworker did) got more of a raise during a review, that new person actually ended up getting paid more than the senior person. The senior coworker worked a lot harder and was more knowledgeable about the job than anyone else in the office. 

Beware if you do become a favorite, however. You can fall out of favoritism and when you do, you're going to be treated worse than those who have been unfavorable in management's eyes. 

Management is a mess. It's too much to go into detail about how much backstabbing, bad-mouthing about others in management, etc. There are some in management who put their work on their employees and then take the credit for the work.  

HR is not your friend. A big group of gossipers that care less about other employees. They rarely want to help and rather just chit-chat in the hallway. 

Unless you're a workaholic who likes to be in a high-stress environment, working 50-60 hours a week, with little to no support, this may be the job for you.

You stay late or come in early because you want to make sure the patients get what they need. Management does not approve of this.

Benefits are horrible being an oncology practice. PTO and sick time are a joke. You don’t get much PTO

They do encourage training and certifications

Management is a joke. They do walk around and speak only to their “friends” or people they like. They don’t care to get to know others. Nurse manager could care less if you are happy or the staff. Many complaints but nothing is ever done from upper management. Clinical nurse leader can’t practice what she preaches and people have been written up for the same things she has done and continues to do. Such as coming in early and staying late.  She is out for herself.  The staff that do click get a long great but often times you are pitted against one another because they simply do not have enough staff and they do not foster working together as a team. Often times you just fend for yourself. If they are now hiring with a sign on bonus run far away from it. You get sucked in and once you leave you realize how dysfunctional NECS really is. While working there you begin to doubt yourself and years of education and training prior to working there does not matter to management at all. They do everything they can for patients.

If you don’t care that management is horrible and you don’t mind losing some self respect than the job is for you

Patient care is 100% amazing. I could never lower my standards and work for their management team. There is a reason they are always hiring. Once we had a meeting after the staff did a survey monkey and they realized how unhappy people were. We had 2 meetings with staff from every area. We listed everything that could be done to make it better. We never had a follow up after they were going to present it to the board of directors. LONG before Covid this happened and not one thing changed and no follow up meetings even though many staff members had reached out. Wanting to make positive changes only to see so many people leave. Going back to work at NECS is like PTSD. You don’t go back.

The management here is pretty poor in multiple locations. (Shared in Kennebunk and Scarborough)  There is a huge, constant turnaround. I saw someone recently get fired because she wasn't picking up on the job fast enough. 
I was thrown to the wolves when I first started, and they never made sure we had proper equipment and resources until a year later. We were expected to be in multiple places at one time, and use our cars to travel with specimens without reimbursement. If you aren't a nurse or a doctor, don't expect to be treated fairly. Most of HR (other than one) is a joke, and if you aren't their "friend" like management, also don't expect much. MAs are treated poorly in some departments, if you're working under a nurse. Expect to be asked to do a lot for them when you're already trying to juggle 5 different things. 
That being said, the patients are amazing and some staff are very supportive and willing to help out. Management is New England Cancer Specialists poison. Patients are the main goal, but management makes it easy to lose sight of that when you're overworked and treated poorly. Also, if you have a personal problem, and tell a manager, expect every other manager to know about said problem within the day.

New England Cancer Specialists does hard work.  We are here to make others lives better and we succeed at this everyday.  The work is rewarding in so many ways.  To know that you are making a difference in someones life when they are going through treatment is incredibly rewarding. We take patient customer service very seriously.   The company does what it can for its employees, we get excellent paid time off, paid holidays, and if we have a problem outside of work I have found them very responsive and do what they can to work with the employee.Every year the company has a party to honor its employees, as well as little things all throughout the year like gas cards and cards to get your Thanksgiving Turkey This job is not for everyone, as I can see if other reviews, but for me and my coworkers it is!  If you love to give the best care to patients, if you love making a difference NECS is the place for you.

So the service they provide to patients is amazing, I am blown out of the park with out much they emphasize that the patient is #1.
Working at NECS has been a rollercoaster and when I left it was time for me to get off. Upper management turnover is surprising. They expect a lot from their PCC's, Prior Authorization specialists, and nurses. They need more staff and to retain said staff, in order to assure they stop their burnout cycle of employees. They expect too much from one person, often overloading staff. They say, "just let us know if its too much, we don't want to overload you" but then reprimand you when you step up and ask for help. Saying things like X can do it, so you should be able to. Well, I talk with X every day and they are at capacity too and about to fall apart, but they don't want to mention it because nothing will be done.

I worked at NECS for about 3 years, but had to leave for medical reasons, however, it was a terrific place to work and my coworkers were always there to help with any questions/problems and I feel that we worked together well in the billing Dept. Our dept always had fun, of course before Covid19, at Christmas time we had "Pajama Day", "Ugly Sweater day", Cookie swap, etc. We received lunches or incentives when we met our monthly goals!
NECS paid for my AAPC membership and recently for a course and exam for the COC certification and prior to that for the CPB certification. They have a very generous 401K and Profit Sharing, in which you're enrolled after 1 year of employment.
I would recommend this company to anyone and will maybe one day return if something opens up!

This is a company that truly cares for their patients and employees. They go above and beyond to help patients when they need it most and they show that same attitude for employees. My managers are always willing to hear my suggestions/ideas and then do something with it afterwards, not like other places where nothing comes of it. I truly enjoy going to work because it's a place I feel wanted and encouraged to succeed. The company has great benefits- pto and paid holidays, they pay for education advancements, certifications, and willing to work with you with when you have a personal matter that requires you to leave work for a bit. (I am a current employee, not a past one like other reviews written. If only the past employees write reviews then your not hearing what the people who want to be there and love working there.)

The people that work for NECS make this company special! Our staff works diligently every day to go above and beyond for patients and their families. Nursing management is supportive, thoughtful and proactive. The office is busy due to the patient volume but the team works collaboratively to get everything done for patients in a timely manner while ensuring staff maintain a work-life balance. Management has also been flexible with schedules and hours, ie reducing to 32 hours from 40 to promote employee wellbeing. The company offers many financial perks like random gas cards to staff or a Hannaford gift card before Thanksgiving. NECS is also expanding to a brand new location to better meet the needs of our patients and staff! NECS is a great company to work for. 

Management at this company leaves something to be desired to say the least - the staff here are a bunch of catty women who do nothing but choose a target and cause as much drama as possible for that person while their own unprofessional, inappropriate and abusive behavior goes completely unnoticed and is apparently perfectly acceptable. I felt bullied and uncomfortable every day. Working for a verbally abusive doctor who stomps around angry all day isn't fun either especially when you're told to "just nod and agree" with their behavior. Everything here is based on favoritism and hear-say I had absolutely no chance to defend myself or be heard in any way even after asking to speak with HR . Be very careful about accepting a position here.

Management/HR are the real bullies here. I’ve been put in trouble multiple times for things that are either out of my control or because I didn’t interpret the poorly written and vague policies the same as HR. When concerns are brought up to HR or management, they are quickly dismissed without truly listening or understanding and then they turn it around and make the issue the employees fault. HR even told me to “change my face” because I didn’t look approachable enough, but HR constantly walks around the office looking like someone just killed their dog. They’re hypocritical, insensitive, and just simply bad at what they do. If you value your mental health you’ll steer clear of this atrocious hot mess of an office.
