What is the best part of working at the company?
If I could leave zero stars for this job, I would. There is honestly no best part about working here , the only good part of my day was finishing my shift and being able to leave.

Management is disorganized, inconsistent, and rarely takes accountability. Communication is unclear and constantly changing, which makes it nearly impossible to feel confident in your role. Expectations are unrealistic, yet support and training are minimal. When concerns are brought up, they are ignored, minimized, or somehow turned back onto staff.

Staff are severely overworked due to constant understaffing. It’s not uncommon to be scheduled or pressured into working over 80 hours because there simply aren’t enough employees. Instead of addressing the staffing shortage, leadership places the burden on the remaining staff. Burnout is normalized, and exhaustion is expected.

The workload is overwhelming, morale is extremely low, and turnover is high. Hard work goes unnoticed, favoritism is apparent, and policies are enforced inconsistently. There is little appreciation for employees, and no real effort is made to retain or value good staff members. Work life balance is not respected, and employees are treated as replaceable rather than supported.

Instead of fostering growth or professional development, the environment feels draining, stressful, and emotionally exhausting. Leadership prioritizes keeping shifts covered at any cost , even if that cost is the well-being of their staff.

I would strongly discourage anyone seeking a healthy, supportive, and professionally managed workplace from applying here.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at this company is the chronic understaffing and the unrealistic workload that comes with it. Employees are regularly expected to work excessive hours sometimes over 80 hours just to keep shifts covered. Instead of addressing the staffing shortage, management places the burden on the remaining staff, which leads to constant burnout and exhaustion.

On top of that, management shows little genuine concern for staff well-being. Concerns are often ignored, minimized, or dismissed rather than addressed. There is a clear lack of empathy and accountability from leadership. Additionally, on call support is unreliable and unhelpful, leaving staff to handle difficult or high pressure situations without adequate guidance or backup.

The combination of overwhelming hours, lack of support, and leadership that does not prioritize staff well-being makes the environment extremely stressful and unsustainable.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment honestly feels very draining. Most people seem exhausted because we’re constantly understaffed and overworked. It’s hard to feel positive or motivated when everyone is just trying to get through their shift. Morale is low, and a lot of good employees end up leaving, which only makes things harder for the staff who stay.

The culture doesn’t feel very supportive. Management seems more focused on making sure shifts are covered than actually listening to staff concerns. When issues are brought up, they don’t always feel taken seriously. Communication can be unclear, expectations change often, and there isn’t much recognition for the effort employees put in.

Overall, it is a horrible company, horrible management, and the staff are not support or valued AT ALL.

I worked at Newport during the opening phase of three McLean-area locations and was initially very excited about the opportunity. At the time, it felt like a huge step forward in my career while I was still in college. The mission, benefits, and client care model were genuinely strong, and there were aspects of the work itself that I found deeply meaningful.

Unfortunately, the internal work environment was one of the most unhealthy and disorganized professional environments I’ve experienced. During the launch period, there was constant interpersonal conflict among staff, extremely poor morale, high turnover, and ongoing operational instability that leadership did not seem prepared to manage effectively. What should have felt like a collaborative mental health treatment environment instead often felt tense, emotionally draining, and unsustainably stressful for many employees.

One of the biggest issues for me personally was being hired for a 3pm–11pm schedule, then being expected to work 7am–3pm for most of my employment there. The role I ended up working was significantly different from what was presented during hiring, and the scheduling issue became serious enough that employees were at one point offered unpaid leave while waiting for accommodations that ultimately never materialized during my time there. While I tried to adapt, the situation created significant strain on my work-life balance and outside responsibilities.

Several employees left during my time there, including leadership, and there was a widespread sense of burnout and frustration across the team. By the end of my employment, it felt clear that many of the internal issues were not being meaningfully addressed despite how heavily they were affecting staff wellbeing and retention.

I genuinely wanted this role to succeed because I believed in the mission and cared deeply about the work. That’s part of why the experience was so disappointing. The program had a great deal of potential, but the internal culture, instability, and lack of organizational support ultimately made it unsustainable for me and many others who left during my time there. 

If you're looking for a job with purpose, and meaning.  This is NOT the job for you. If you're looking for a job for a paycheck! Well GOOD LUCK.    When I first got interviewed to work at Newport, I was extremely excited.  I though about how unique the work was as a "teen rehab" facility.  I got hired after the interview.  It took 3 MONTHS to start the actual job.  Sometimes the employer wouldn't reach out during that time, which made me anxious about having  a job at all.  Upon starting with this company, the training was very very shallow.  They had me shadow a few days with their worst staff members.  I heard the staff curse just as much as the kids if not more.  The other staff members that work there make it their duty to target you as a new employee.  They paired me with another staff (random person) for the day and sometimes the other person would disappear and leave me with all the kids.  They wanted to get coffee or grab a bite to eat.  The other staff who have formed clicks whisper back and forth to eachother, and they don't include new staff to discussions about the kids or redirection efforts.  It was an awful experience to say the least.  The residential facility is run like a summer camp for kids.  The kids curse at you and belittle you as staff with zero regard for punishment.  The staff spend the majority of the day catering to the kids, never ever saying no to a task the kid may pose no matter how disruptive it is, or unimportant.  They make it there duty to be extremely passive.  I mean EXTREMELY passive.  I mean the staff actually act like the kids themselves.  I saw little to no treatment techniques, the kids never talked positively about the program.  They spent the majority of everyday coloring, making bracelets, listening to vulgar music, and gossiping as peers.  ,I never heard them talk about recovery, and the company doesn't even implement the 12 step program.  Day to day actually, I barely heard them (company overall) ever talk about treatment.  Management plans meetings for the kids and not show up, so the kids run their own meeting.  No voice of reason, no adult morale, no role models for them.  I felt pathetic working here, and I feel if you're a humanitarian like myself this place will ruin your morale. Such a High quality facility, with nothing more than a daycare inside. I may sound a bit bitter but I had high hopes for this place, but it's truly such a sorry place to work.

Working as a tutor, but you are not just a tutor, but a teacher's assistant. You support the teacher and the teacher is your direct supervisor. The co-workers were in the same age group (Millennials and Gen-z) so it was great having like minded people and having a helpful work culture without the managers & directors and up. You need to get stuff done every week and put the information into their supporting EHR program within 24-48hrs. The higher up only care about the students being admitted to the program and use the education department as a selling point. You have to work with different schools and keep track of their studies. Certain school portals might be blocked, so you will be the middle person to  print out the assignment, scan it and email it back once completed, while answering emails, completing administrative work and tutoring in various subjects if possible. Each location is different, the people and management is the reason for you not enjoying your job. The students were not the problem is you know how to handle stubborn, difficult teenagers. The management was not great and favor the higher ups then supporting their own team at the location, which caused people to quit. You do need to be comfortable with mental health industry to accept this job. I did get an opportunity to understand the industry by having a professional development after my 90 day review. the most enjoyable part of the job was planning the fun Friday activities (outing trip, movie, art n craft, games) for the students. The company is a business and will take students for money and see employees as replaceable workers. I was promoted from Tutor I to Tutor II, where my supervisor fought for my pay increase. I had started at $20/hr and ended at $24/hr. A typical day is checking-in with all the students and plan out their goals for the week, tutoring during the classroom, providing them resources. Completing draft weekly reports on each student by the end of the week, filling out EHR in the program and keeping track of grades and hours for extracurricular activities, writing weekly academic notes for student review with other shareholders and planning fun friday activity weekly.

Newport Healthcare is a great stepping stone if you’re trying to gain experience in the mental health field. You have hands on experience with clients, the opportunity to pick clinicians brains, and get the experience you’ll need to further yourself in the field or in your career. 

Although it’s amazing experience, Newport is extremely passive in the way they handle situations on the programming side. There are supervisors on campus, who simply shouldn’t be supervising. They were hired because of tenure within the company. When a staff member continues to make mistakes, that staff member most likely won’t see much repercussion because their supervisor most likely doesn’t know how to supervise and/or handle that situation. They claim to have had a conversation with them, but most likely it was just a passive conversation barely touching on the issue. The supervisors and directors will sugar coat the situation because they don’t want to be the “bearer of bad news” or make that staff member upset. But in a residential facility with fifty or so clients and hundreds of staff members, there needs to be either a director or residential supervisor with the intestinal fortitude to inform staff members(both on the clinical and programming side) when a mistake continues to happen. It only helps that staff member grow, but it’s hard to grow when their own supervisor isn’t helping that staff member learn from their mistakes. A lot of complaints or emails that get sent to supervisors will get the response “we’ll look into it. Thank you for letting us know.” You’ll ask yourself, are they really though? Because that staff member continues to make mistakes and no one has done anything about it despite the continuous documentation on it. It gets frustrating after a while. 

As stated before, the experience at a residential facility is great. Especially if you’re trying to receive a CAC or any license. It’s a great starting job. There’s room to grow within the company. Just depends on how much of the weak/passive management you can take before you wind up leaving. 



So I worked at this company for about 6 months. While I was with the company I saw 10 second shifters leave in one week. We all asked to be switched to part time or a different shift. NO ONE was granted these changes. We were told there was a waiting list in which no one EVER got off that list. So instead of taking 5 minutes to adjust a schedule they let 10 employees quit. All the while they would hire new employees and give them the part time hours or the shifts the original staff asked for. This company DOES NOT care about their employees or clients. At any point of the day you are a care coordinator, a therapist , crisis management and an all around caregiver for pennies. Staff is so underpaid. Therapists are never on duty. And if they are they see their clients for 5 minutes. How do you expect anyone to get better with 5 minutes of therapy. I had such high hopes for working at this company and they were shot down within 1 month. I stayed for the clients. Staff does nothing but gossip about each other, management does nothing to assist you when you have a problem. If you have pto and you want to use a day, but don’t find coverage you’re reprimanded. If you’re sick and don’t want to use your pto they take it anyways. This place is an absolute joke. All they care about is the money , they get 3000 a day per client. They overflow the houses and expect us to work out of ratio, but then will deny us activities due to the ratio being out of balance. The residential supervisors have absolutely no clue what they’re doing, they do not communicate with each other so they’ll book more than one pod for an activity at the same time then not allow both pods to do this activity due to COVID. So one pod then has to sit around with their thumbs up their butts. Now let’s talk about the eating disorder clients. One meal is prepared for a very client. There are no options. How do you expect someone with an eating disorder to get better if there are no options ? The food was often over cooked and impossible to eat. Honestly eating disorder clients got worse here. It’s just really sad. All in all this place is terrible. I would not recommend it to anyone. 

Starting with the positve being a  care coordinator is a good entry level position where you can gain experience in the mental health field. However, it seems the company very much cares about profits and image over people. For example, at the beginning of the pandemic we got an email stating that we were not allowed to wear cloth face coverings. As soon as guidelines from the CDC and DCF came out we were immediately required to wear them. The comfort and protection of staff was not a priority, only keeping a certain image. Care coordinators also have no say in clients treatment or care even though we spend the most time with them. For example, you have to sometimes go through multiple clinical and management staff for a client to be approved to abstain from an activity or do something as simple as take a shower after exercising. Additionally, care coordinators are expected to manage daily tasks and notes, while virtually serving as clinical staff when there is no therapist on site or they will not meet with a client because they need to "use their coping skills". Additionally, there are rigid rules and guidelines that do not have any apparent benefit. For example, clients cannot use their free time to watch television. Newports policies around food are also strange and potentially harmful. Clients are not given options in regards to food and if they do not like what is offered they cannot eat. It doesnt make sense to me how restricting when and what someone can eat is healthy especially for clients with eating disorders. Hours are also inflexible and many staff are required to work weekends. I had no work life balance until i was approved for a schedule  change many  months in. I did not agree with many of the company policies or philosophies but I gained experience and it got me by for the time being.

I truly believe that Newport Healthcare is one of the best places for a client to receive the best mental health treatment possible. Their dedication to even the most challenging clients is better than any of the 3 treatment centers I've worked in previously. No other place does the same quality of work as they do.

However, their treatment of employees in terms of pay, benefits, and consequences for mistakes was laughable. On the alumni team, I was required to be on the team for one year before I could begin their "leadership track" project. A 3-5 month project leading to a 2$ pay raise. 2 months into the project I made a few mistakes and received the lowest level of company discipline. As a result, I was forced to stop the project, restart all of my progress, delay 6 months, and lose my eligibility for tuition reimbursement. This cost me an estimated 6000$ in lost income within one year. During the height of inflation at 9% within one month, I was only offered a 2.3% raise. I left that job earning significantly less month to month due to the rise in inflation, and the company refused to address it.

I remember asking my manager several times for additional work to further my career and was told "There will be more coming, just focus on the "why."" Referring to why we support our clients. More work never came and the leadership tracks would take 4-6 years to receive only a 6$ raise. I could barely afford rent due to inflation at this time.

They do amazing work for their clients, but employee treatment is very poor.

Newport Academy does not promote fairly. Newport Academy will post open positions with said requirements but will look over someone more qualified for the position for someone who simply "looks the part" but possesses credentials equivalent to a high school diploma. Newport Academy only posts the positions to make it seem like they are looking for candidates. Yes it looks like Newport hires fairly but if you are in recovery and in recovery by the higher ups who are also in recovery/using then you are likely to have a great experience within this job. There was a more recent instance where someone was hired as a CC, but was promoted to resident supervisor within their 90 day probation. Newport Academy provides their workers with handbooks that state how a promotion should work and it should not be done within the workers probation period. When the initial resident supervisors position was opened many workers who had tenure 1-2+ years applied for this position. Unfortunately this position was "already filled" Newport Academy (CT) already choose who they wanted as a resident supervisor before even making the job posting. Newport is sneaky and there needs to be a union or something that can ensure fair promotions.

Newport Academy does not provide meals for 3rd shift despite what is "advertised". Since there are no meals 3rd shift should be entitled to a break. 3rd shift receives neither. When higher ups are asked about meals for 3rd shift they always respond "We are working in it". Newport academy has been "working on meals" for about 2 years now. Each time we bring up food for 3rd shift or breaks we are repeatedly told they are "working on it". Pretty sure this violates CT labor laws.

Working with the kids is great, challenging sometimes but not the hardest job I ever worked. At least right now, if your coworkers like you they will help you with things and have your back, if they don't, they will report anything you do wrong. I got one "final warning" and then fired. I saw other coworkers having the same mistakes or breaking the rules or just straight up not doing the work, so it seems a matter of your coworkers liking you enough to report you and your boss liking you. 
Which the biggest thing I'd say I learned from the job, it doesn't matter sometimes how much you like your job and how hard you work if your manager and some coworkers don't like you. 
Other than the cliques, it was a fun job a lot of the time. 
Biggest cons is that they say they care about their workers...but I wouldn't say that's true for all management. They don't allow you to wear hats or shorts and that can be terrible in the summer going outside with the kids in the summer. I got sun sick once and would have probably more had I continued working there. 
If you have the experience or education to get paid 24-26 an hour and the ability to get people to like you, I would say its a good job. If not, its probably not worth it or you will get fired as well after the 90 days (at least if you had the same manager as me).
