The direct care staff and unit management team are great; it is a good on the fooor environment to work; for the most part, you are able to work well with the team since they are competent and friendly. The management team from the DON to scheduling was a much different story. Often times I would be mandated, which happen very frequently for the CNA’s but for the pay and the job demand, CNA’s are under appreciated and get burnt out as evident by CNA’s that have there for 7+ years. The scheduler is tough to work with; on many occasions I or other staff is work would run into encounters that we would have to make appts and the schedulor made it virtually impossible to try and commit to personal obligations, which brings me to my reasoning to seek other job opportunities. 
Right before the holidays (Christmas), I was scheduled to work the weekend before, and then Christmas, which fell on a Tuesday. Our schedulor asked me the Friday before if I would be able to work Christmas Eve for 4 hours in the morning, I told her I would get back to her; she wrote me on the schedule anyways. Then I realized I had a prior obligation the morning of Christmas Eve and immediately called her back. She didn’t respond to my call but messaged me back. I then responded to her message and she didn’t respond until 6 hours later that evening telling me “it’ll have to be marked as a call-in, nothing I can do to help you now.” I worked Saturday, and then had an obligation to tend to in Grand Rapids. We were stuck in Grand Rapids until late at night, encountered Michigan winter weather, and then had a flat tire. I arrived home at 4:45am and was scheduled to work 8 hours starting at 6:30am, with the always possibility of being mandated for 16 hours. It seemed unsafe to work such a job on so little sleep. So I called in; I called in for both Sunday and Monday, since management was already aware I would have to call-in for Monday. I was informed that I lost my holiday pay for Christmas because I was marked as a call-in the day before, which is a “company policy.” Merry Christmas right? 
I am not an employee that is in trouble or has had issues with attendance or competence; I was admitted into nursing school, working between full and part-time and going to school full time.

On an average night shift you could frequently have 30 acute residents with complex needs ( 2-6 trachea patient) or 45 plus long term residents. Frequently the cena staff would disappear and because the nurse is so overwhelmed with the needs of those she is caring for, the nurse would have to pick up the slack from the cena'. As a nurse I didn't have time to chase the cena' down, and it was impossible to leave the unit unattended to hunt them down.  They really needed an off shift supervisor. The  basic duties such as passing meds,  documentation  and supervision of cena's that could never be found, along with the direct care of the resident left no time for any out of the ordinary events such as falls etc.. I frequently would achieve at least 1.5 to 2 hours of overtime because of the lack of time that was allocated to misfortunate events. Often you would have to work an additional 4 hours due to lack of staffing and frequent call ins. Management sits in there ivory tower and only frequent the units (during the daytime hours) if something is a miss. The nurse educate would rarely scheduled off hours training and if she did she never showed up. I have no intentions every of placing either my mother in law or my mom in this so called managed care facility. The only thing the going for this place are the residents, they are wonderful individuals who put up with sub standard care due to over worked and poorly staffed units. Nurses train to care for individuals on a one to one bases, I know this can never be achieved realistically, but providing safe and caring care should be the standard not the exception.

I've worked at quite a few nursing homes and I have to say Fairlane is different. There is definitely a lot of work and a lot to remember, but it isn't a 'difficult' job. On a good day there are around 17 residents to one nurse on 3 out of the 5 units...the other 2 units need 2 nurses but are only usually staffed with 1. There are a lot of nurses in management but not enough on the floor. From what I understand,  the DON has been known to talk to staff any type of way. Most nurses on the floor will not help each other. The CNA assignments do not go in order by room number,  so you may have a CNA with room 46 and 75...so they're bouncing all over the unit which makes it difficult to track them down. Management constantly pages staff asking them to answer the call lights... Meaning they rarely answer them themselves. Any type of patient is accepted which makes for good experience. Holidays are not broken down into A and B like normal facilities. If a holiday is on your scheduled Thursday for instance,  then it's your holiday to work. So you may end up working Thanksgiving Christmas and New Years. You work like a dog and it still isn't good enough.

Unfortunately, the support from leadership isn’t where it should be. One moment that stood out was when I asked another CNA, “What are we gonna do?” and the executive director walked out of her office and said, “You’re screwed.” That response pretty much sums up the lack of support staff experience at this facility.

In my opinion, the building is not very clean, and upper management is rarely involved or visible on the floor. Staffing is a constant issue — we’re short more often than we’re fully staffed, and people frequently show up late without much consequence. That leaves those of us who are there to carry more than our share, day after day. In addition, there's no jobs posted for CNAS but they message us everyday asking to pick up…

There’s potential here if leadership chose to step up and actually support the staff and residents properly. The work is hard enough without feeling unsupported and undervalued. With better management, accountability, and attention to the facility’s conditions, this could be a much better place to work and live.

High workload and high expectations for low pay. The dietary department gets paid much less than facilities in the surrounding area. If you're full time, be prepared to cover for the part-time employees who call in often but are seldom reprimanded, and if you refuse to cover, you will be reprimanded. No gratitude for going above and beyond, so if you do decide to work here, be mediocre. The overtime pay is  decent and the pto is decent, but you're lucky to make a dollar over min wage for unlicensed work, and raises are rarely seen. Lazy co-workers are condoned, especially praised if they've been there awhile. Hopefully you're thick skinned, because as you're learning the ropes, you will be treated like the biggest idiot they've ever seen. Management knows it all, although they don't ever actually do the work, so making suggestions or explaining why things aren't working will only make you a target. Be prepared to pick up slack.

I have worked for a Nexcare owned facility for >4 years and loved it.  All good stuff for both the residents and employees.  Once hired in, people stayed.  We were encouraged to develop relationships with our residents and the person centered culture was of great benefit to both. Now, we have new people running the Nexcare facilities and our once stable facility is now on edge.  Good people are leaving and we have lost that family feeling.  It has been said that the new people are going to start taking away some of our benefits too.  Not sure if that is true but regardless, it is very sad to see a once healthy company brought down and disassembled.  I have been here for 4 years and am sad to leave but have just interviewed for a LPN position at the facility down the road because I am not happy at Nexcare anymore.

This job itself isn’t difficult for a cna. It gets busy but it’s not all that bad if we are staffed good. That don’t happen often. Mandation is awful. Someone is always getting mandated to work past their shift. People should know this before applying. You will be mandated!!! It’s exhausting!!! Building is old, supplies (if available) are cheap and hard to come by. The facility isn’t properly cleaned at all! With any nursing home you have good and bad staff. I’d say first shift has the worst attitudes out of all shifts. It’s an OK place to get some experience but I wouldn’t bank on staying there. By far the worse part of this pace is management!! Unprofessional, sneaky and no communication!! Rules change whenever they want them to and everything is to benefit management and not their employees. Place could be a lot better if there were new management.

The nurses are very helpful and encourage the aids to ask questions.  The aids work together and are very willing to help each other.  Everyone is very sweet and friendly.  Although it can be stressful to get everyone up for breakfast on time or to get one task done while you are needed for multiple other tasks, everyone is very understanding and willing to help.  The best part of the job is being able to build relationships with the residents and making them feel cared for and more comfortable.  I love being able to help people and it is so rewarding to just have a sweet conversation with a resident where they get to share who they are or where they have been.  It is really hard for me when I see them in pain, but I'm glad that I have the opportunity to serve them and help improve their quality of life.

If you are an administrator you will have it made. Very business minded- but clinical?  Quality care?  Not valued. It's all about the business side- about the buck. It's sad the changes made over the last year. It's not about care it's about making money. Directors of Nursing- good ones- being let go on the whim- no improvement plans, no training- as if they are of no value. These are not new DONs either. They are experienced leaders with proven results. DONs you will not be valued here; you will be worked to death and not supported. Find a company that will value your dedication to nursing, to your patients and to its company. This is not that kind of company.

I work at NexCare newest center, Cascade Senior Living Center in Jackson, MI. 
It has been horrible since this new owner took over. Our staffing was cut which means that the quality of care that residents receive have gone down. Management doesn't care about the employees. 
I will say this, a healthcare company that doesn't care about their employees can not possible care about the residents of that facility. It's all a money grab for them. They came in, fixed up the place a bit only so they could charge more money to residents and families. But, the quality of care is trash.
Be very careful working for this company or considering placing a loved one in this facility.
