While employed at Nikon Inc (USA Sales) I worked under very little supervision directly for the Inventory control Manger.  I was able to performed my job responsibilities fully and very well. I interfaced daily with the sales department in forecasting sales in preparation of purchasing various products for resale and dealing directly with all the vendors with negotiating prices while soliciting bid proposals  for standard domestic products.  I worked closely with A/P and the warehouse to bring the product to the retail consumer or for stock.
I was able to see the global picture of a multi-warehouse operation and want to be able to utilize that experience in my future endeavors.

I worked for Nikon for five years and during those five years the benefits for medical were top notch. The 401K match is 3 percent so average. Advancement and raises are very low no mater if you are a top tier employee or not. expect about 2 percent raise. The company has been downsizing are restructuring its self over the past couple of years. I think the only reason they are still in the semiconductor game is so that their competition who holds over 80 percent of the market place can not hold a monopoly. 

I learned allot and worked with allot of great people. People started flocking to the competitor for a better work environment and much high pay and better culture and advancement opportunities. They have lost allot of employees due to not being competitive with pay.
One other thing is that if you have a better way to do something or a fix it most likely wont be implemented due to the Japanese culture. If your idea is better it could hurt or insult the feelings of the person who first designed it, thus the company wont change it.

Throughout my time at Nikon I have had the pleasure of working with some really great people. Management is great to work with and allows me to self manage. The downside is that management has little knowledge of what employees are doing; lazy employees are not punished and hard working employees are not rewarded.

One of the greatest skills I learned in this position is the importance of clear and concise communication with customers. As with all customer service positions, there exists a fine balance of making concessions and following company protocols and Nikon has allowed me to hone this skill.

With most large companies change comes slowly or not at all. Nikon is no exception to this rule. This is a very deliberately conservative Japanese company with very few advancement options and low compensation overall.

I enjoyed my years with Nikon Instruments.  During my tenure with Nikon I worked in the Baltimore Field Office and then relocated to Kentucky. For the first 8 years working for Nikon, I was the sales administrator for the East Region of the United States.  I'd say the most enjoyable past of my job was getting to know the employees.  The most stressful part of my job was when their would be changes to the delivery schedule in the last minute.  I'd then take a deep breath and follow through with what needed to be done to make the deliveries by the dates & time the sales rep had requested.
The last 2 years I relocated to  Kentucky to continue my employment with Nikon.  The working environment changed some because all interacation with the sales personnel was by phone.  Kentucky was centrally located and became the shipping hub for Nikon Instruments.  Every day was fast paced and new!

Nikon culture is the primary issue at this company. At my level, we are treated as "dealership" employees rather than real engineers. We are not given full access to the design specifications and rely too heavily upon the parent company, Nikon Corp.for solutions and guidance. Translation of technical information creates unnecessary delays. Training practices are lacking and often not documented. Documentation is poor, logistics are not well-managed, and general efficiency is rarely considered. With new management, this could be the best job ever. The equipment is very high-tech, the industry is solid, the working conditions are generally nothing to complain about, but the leadership does not exist.  We are at best, a reactionary company which will not likely realize true success.  Many employees are leaving on their own accord as the pay is simply not worth the stress.

Nikon Precision is a unique company. It offers decent benefits and pay, but the work itself is challenging for all the wrong reasons. It is stuck in a rut with its customers and its future largely remains out of its own hands. The layoffs seem to be more frequent, and the long term outlook is unknown given the major business choices made in the past. If you are looking for a flourishing career, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a relaxed and comfy job with decent pay, it might be right for you.

Overall Nikon is an incredible brand and company. Nikon Inc in the USA is however slipping behind the curve and is a real toxic environment to be a part of. The paranoid upper management is driving this company into the ground and it is a shame to see that happen. There are no goals (outside of sales numbers), no career tracks, only bullying employees with the term "restructuring" whenever it is convenient to keep whomever is not willing to kiss butt and subscribe to the "good 'ole boys club" mentality under fear of being fired. It is a very "old school" company that does things very outdated. There is no loyalty to any employee... and that's not the way to sustain a great brand such as this. Too bad. 

At Nikon Metrology there is one driving factor, new product sales. Providing world class support for their existing customer base is not considered relevant. The core focus of the company is to continually increase the profit margin returned to Japan at all costs. Typically this is accomplished by new product sales and by continually reducing the number of employees. Continual reductions in staffing is a core directive from Nikon corporate management. I would not recommend Nikon Metrology to anyone looking for employment.

A typical day consists of traveling to customer sites, engaging with customers at a high technical level. Qualification on our product lines then demonstrating our ability to provide a solution. Closing the sale then coordinating installation and training on the types of equipment. The business model seems difficult to sustain because the more you sell, the more installs you have to complete, the more training and larger your troubleshooting workload becomes. Then you sell more and the process grows.

Good culture, lots of projects, fast pace, freedom to innovate and change things, constant improvements, fun workplace, good work-life balance. A lot of their hires come from within, meaning loyalty is usually rewarded with promotions and training to get to where you want to be. Also, company morale is at an all-time high, with a really positive, chill feel to the place that makes it an enjoyable place to work.
