Northeast Georgia Health System

It's not just a branding campaign - it's the culture of NGHS: doing the right things for the right reasons.  From working with patients who can't pay their bill to providing services that lose money but the community needs to making tough decisions to ensure employees have competitive and affordable benefits, I've seen the administrative decision making in action (although I am not a senior administrator) and can attest to their integrity and their heart for employees, patients and the community they serve.

The organization recently went through a core values clarification process which involved employees from all levels.  They did not come up with values they aspire to, rather called out the values that are already inherent in the organization: Respectful Compassion, Deep Interdependence, Passion for Excellence and Responsible Stewardship.  These speak clearly to the type of organization NGHS is and the types of people who work there.

There are numerous long tenured employees at NGHS; many have been there more than 20 years and it's not unusual to have dozens each year celebrate 30, 35 and 40-year anniversaries.  This is a place people stay.  It's no wonder NGHS has been named one of Atlanta's Top 100 Workplaces four years in a row - one of only 20 to place in the Large Company Category.

These comments speak to the employee culture, but it's also worth noting that working at NGHS places you at one of the best health systems in the country.  The heart program has ranked best in state for a solid decade, and other specialty services such as orthopedics, women's health and critical care have also placed top in state according to healthcare rankings organization such as Healthgrades and CareChex.  They also have been a Truven Top 100 Hospital for three years.  You can take pride working at such a stellar organization that is attracting physicians and clinicians from across the country.

As a hospice aide, I  was given an average of 5-8 patients a day to see across so many counties. We established our own route on a daily basis and made an appointment time with each patient. Each new patient represented a challenge, because you never knew what kind of family environment you were walking into. I really learned how to adapt and change according to the needs and expectations of  the patient and their families. A typical day usually averaged around 85 miles total, personal care for each patient and addressing issues with the family about their personal care. I also assisted the patients and the family through the dying process, therefore providing comfort and peace for all parties involved. Management was sometimes difficult to approach if there were any issues. It's hard to relate to a topic when it's not experienced first hand. The co- workers were the best I've ever worked with in the field and I've been in this field for 10 plus years. I forged some very valuable friendships while I was there. They were a large part of what made the job more enjoyable. Meeting new families and patients was another. I so enjoyed meeting new patients and the families that helped make them so special. The miles that you drove were sometimes hard and the hardest was losing a patient and watching the grief the families went through. But knowing the peace and comfort that I ultimately brought to the patient and the family made it all worth it.

The ONLY good thing I enjoyed about working here were my coworkers. The health insurance is expensive. If you work in Braselton on night shift, you have to bring your lunch bc the cafeteria closes at 7. No matter how much you voice your opinions, you get absolutely NO support from management or administration. I worked there for several years and not once did I even meet a single member of Administration. I NEVER felt appreciated. I'll say it again, I NEVER felt appreciated.  Policies get "bent" always in the company's favor. Speaking as an RN, you are constantly being floated to other units. There is never enough equipment, as in telemetry boxes or IV pumps or even sectors for patients to even be monitored on telemetry.  So you literally have to physically search other units to find equipment. There isn't a transport team, lift team or an IV team. So again, no support for nurses. Let's say the ED calls you to give you report and you aren't able to take the call bc you're busy in another patients room...if you don't call them back within 10 minutes, they automatically send the patient up without report. There have been MANY occasions where charge nurses are being forced to charge multiple units and have patients of their own. Therefore you can't rely on them for support. EVS is always behind on cleaning rooms. The curtains in the rooms rarely get cleaned or changed even after isolation patients. I could go on and on...

Many multitasking days trading off project planning, workflow evalualtion, and implementations with real time system management, troubleshooting and testing. Have a matrix resource system to manage and apply resources as necessary. Evaluate and negotiate with vendors from infrastructure to software and end user training. The IT department as a whole is one of the best I have encountered in my travels in term of knowledge and critical yet logical thinking about healthcare information technology. Most all of the systems are cutting edge technology, with an attempt to keep current and yet ground breaking in others. For example the HIE I have as a project for data exchange between facilities in 23 counties and, eventually the state, has a base environment specifications but continue to improve the system performance with the vendor well beyond what began as the original design. The most difficult part has been bringing so much change in so little time to quite the range of technical ability of the physician and customer base. The challenges of doing such is also some of the most enjoyable, being challenged keeps me on my toes, aware of the patient, not merely system advancement.

I enjoy working for Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The employers work with your school schedule to encourage growth of education. While patient care is very important to management, profit is equally important. I understand that profit is what keeps a business alive, but patient satisfaction is what draws profit. It is essential that there is an equal balance of priority in such businesses. One thing that should be remembered is overall, "the customer is always right," we must strive to satisfy the ones who keep us running. The hardest part of the Job is staffing. With the medical field there is always a turnover rate that is hard maintain. Lets face it, the medical field is usually not desired for its fashion. Maintaining fully staffed floors is an issue for every medical facility housing more than one floor of specialty. Therefore, there are days where we do not have enough staff and the work load is heavy. This does stress your patients as well. They are not able to recieve the same care that would be readily available if we were properly staffed. Overall, Northeast Georgia Medical Center is a good facility to work for.

As an employee, it’s disheartening when management disregards concerns and resorts to dishonesty. It’s even worse when bringing up legitimate issues results in being labeled a problem for the company.

In my experience, management’s indifference and readiness to manipulate the truth have created a toxic work environment. Despite raising concerns through proper channels like HR, the response has been to vilify rather than address the issues.

As a veteran, I’ve learned the value of integrity, a principle seemingly lost on some in leadership positions. It’s alarming when upper management casually dismisses valid concerns as “mental breakdowns,” especially considering the sacrifices made by veterans like myself and my husband, a Purple Heart recipient. The next time upper management wants to make ignorant comments about someone with a mental illness, they should ensure it’s done behind closed doors, not in the hallway where others can hear and be affected.

It’s time for management to recognize that fostering a culture of honesty and accountability benefits everyone. No employee should fear retribution for standing up for what’s right. 

It’s also  hypocritical for this company and management to preach about integrity while allowing it to slip through the cracks when it comes to their own actions and decisions.



Worked on night shift due to nature of job/position. Worked as a sleep disorders technician. Limited room for advancement in that particular area and pay was not as high as the industry standard but still not an unfair pay amount. Management was a mix of competence and incompetence but I guess the same could be said for most company's management team. Shifts were long and being exclusively night shift work, at the time, it prevented me from completing my college degree but I knew that prior to signing up so I can't blame anyone but me for that aspect. Most divisions operate a lot better from I know of them as I have two friends that work in other departments/divisions. One is in a charge nursing position for the E.R. and the other is in a supervisor role within the hospital security. They both absolutely love their jobs so my review would all but exclusively apply to the sleep disorders sector and even still I have a friend that still works with them since the hospital took complete control of the sleep disorders division and they tell me the pay has significantly gotten better and so has the treatment of employees. So treat this review as "dated" until you hear otherwise.

Very fast paced place to work, every shift had different experiences and challenges.  Multi cultural employer that dealt with many different social and racial groups.  I was taught the newest system to assist all medical team members with patient demographics.  I personally learned further how to work with the many different personalities within the diverse departments I worked with.  Management was always present and ready to assist and give encouragement when needed, but also gave correction in a fair diplomatic way when needed.  The hardest part of my job was having to deal with traumatic circumstances on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. This was quickly contradicted by being a part of the relief and happiness extended by the patients and their families upon hearing good news about their condition.

I worked in IMCU and float to ED and PCU when census was low.
A typical day at work involved staying busy, multitasking, and working closely with a supportive team. Each day brought something different, which kept things engaging and challenging. I learned how to manage my time more efficiently, improved my communication skills, and gained hands-on experience in problem-solving under pressure.

Management, she was generally approachable and willing to help when needed. They provided guidance and support but also gave employees the space to work independently. Feedback was fair and consistent.

The workplace culture was friendly and team-oriented. Everyone was willing to help each other out, and there was a strong sense of community, which made coming to work enjoyable.

The hardest part of the job was dealing with high workloads during peak times, holidays especially when it was flu season. It required staying calm and organized under pressure. However, the most enjoyable part was the people — both coworkers and customers. Building relationships and being part of a team that truly cared about doing good work made it wonderful.
I wish to return back but unfortunately no day shifts never available for my specialty.

This clinic was a fun, but busy place to work. I truly enjoyed most of my coworkers, but there was a lot of favoritism played by management. I was terminated for talking about self defense with other coworkers in the elevator after work because I admitted to having a taser in my vehicle. One employee lied and told HR that I stated that I carried the taser in my purse which was not true at all. I was not given the chance to explain the situation that actually happened and HR completely ignored the statements that were written by three other employees that stated that the taser was never in my purse, no one had ever seen it, and I clearly told them that the taser was in my purse. NGPG's rules of weapons is that you cannot have any kind of weapon in your vehicle on their property as an employee. I was unaware of that rule and although I never walked inside the building with that taser, because it was in my car (which was on their property) and I admitted to that, I was terminated for it. I am not bashing the company, but that was the most humiliating and devastating situation that I could have ever experienced with an employer, especially when you have two kids that you have to feed.
