Norton Rose Fulbright

Working at Fulbright was a great experience and one I will hold dear for my lifetime.  The attorneys I worked for supported me during my darkest hours and celebrated my greatest moments.  My typical day ended with a thank you from my attorneys and I learned that hard work was well rewarded not only in compensation but in appreciation.  The people I worked with were also inspirational and supportive and were great people to spend the majority of my waking hours with.

The hardest part of the job was the commute to and from work.  Thankfully, the people I worked for knew how bad the traffic was on I-10 and never confronted me when I was late for work.

The most enjoyable part of the job was the support and kindness of those I worked with.  They will always be a part of my work family and I am thankful to have the memories we share.

Norton Rose Fulbright was Chadbourne & Parke prior to July 2017.  Chadbourne was the position I accepted back in 2011 and I was supporting the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Management Committee.  Since the merger, all departments are being restructed and the COO has departed and the Executive Management Committee has dissolved and I now support the Vice Chair and Chief Deputy of Finance.  I enjoyed the day to day active with the COO and setting up all internal and external meetings and events.  I also coordinated  the Litigation Practice with their monthly luncheon meetings and Holiday gatherings.  It was faced paced and I enjoyed the interaction with everyone involved.

Now my position has slowed down and I still assist Litigation with their internal luncheons and evening event gatherings.

I supported two partners and two associates in the practice finance group.  A typical day recently would be do focus on billing issues (we recently changed billing systems to SAP).  I also made travel arrangements, worked on expense reports, etc.  I learned how to use File Site and SAP.  The workplace culture was laid back, but could be stressful at times due to the merger, and the combination of two different cultures.  The most enjoyable part of my job was working with good people, including my assigned attorneys.

I worked as a patent paralegal for three years and never felt that the partners were genuine or considerate of their team, their needs, their workload, and their responsibilities. It is very top-down as management style goes, and they are not open to changing that or even considering comments even in a city with a culture like Austin’s.
If you are dead-set on working in Big Law, this isn’t a bad place to work but I wouldn’t stay there long.

Typical duties include making copies, scanning documents, burning CDs/DVD, making booklets using GBC and Coil binding supplies in addition to various other tasks. During my employment I learned how to work smarter as result of co-workers who showed me more proficient ways of handling certain tasks.

Counsel in  providing best service to our clients. 

We had all the litigation skillls and mental knowledge to achieve excellence for our clients and strive to provide the greatest outcome of the worst situation in each case.

No training for new people, no advancement even after years of employment, and work culture is not the best. You are so busy most of the time trying to organize that you don't get any time to visit or have fun. It's just strictly billables that are pushed and if you miss too much work, you will be prompted.  

At this firm everyone comes to work to WORK. Throughout the day I would deliver, drop off or pick up files; while gaining insight in different parts of law. The Lawyers are awesome, they will answer any questions you have. I love this Place I can write a book.

It's a great place to work.  But the overall culture is that secretaries and other support staff are commodities, like furniture and about as interchangeable. However, there are attorneys working here who value what their assistants do.  It's just a matter of finding those individuals and being fortunate enough to work for them.

There seems to be a reduction in workforce once/twice per year since just prior to going global with the combination of Fulbright & Jaworski and Norton Rose.   Prior to the combination, F&J was very loyal to it's staff, and the staff enjoyed their employer.  As the original partners are retiring, the younger partners are only concerned with numbers.
