Norwood Crossing

While working at Norwood Crossing I was able to learn the regulations of running an Assisted Living building.  In the past, I had only worked in a Skilled Care setting.  I was a able to work closely with the nursing department, physicians as well as the Life Enrichment department to assist in Dementia programming.  My co-workers were very friendly and really cared a lot about the residents as well as their families.  

The hardest part of the job was that there wasn't consistency in the administration staff.  Throughout the duration of my employment I had three different supervisors.  

The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to work with the elderly specifically those resident's with Dementia.  My passion is working with residents who have Dementia and setting up purposeful and meaningful days.  I also loved interacting with families and getting to know the history of the residents. I also really enjoyed working with my staff including the nurses, c.n.a.s and activity aids.

On the surface, Norwood Crossing appears to be a pleasant place to work.  Friendly staff, interesting history. But soon you will learn that there is a very insular administration that does not welcome new staff with ideas or suggestions, even if valid. If you question or suggest anything, you are branded a troublemaker, and more than likely your life will be made miserable and you will resign or get fired. Nursing managers are chosen not because they are experienced, highly skilled, or exemplary leaders.  They are chosen because they are willing to be patsies for upper management. With their lack of experience, they don’t know any better and woefully lack critical thinking.  If you want to develop as an expert geriatric nurse, know your clinical knowledge is respected and your opinions are heard, and be challenged and grow in your profession, you can do better than Norwood Crossing.

Being around the residence, getting to know the residence and getting to know my coworkers

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I really didn’t have no stress because I love to work around the residence and I love cleaning their rooms making sure they had a clean room there environment. I made sure was very clean and I love my job without stress.

Getting to know the nurses in the CNA‘s and all different culture

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Getting my day, started by introducing myself to the residence and the activity peoples, and the nurses and the CNA‘s and my coworkers

My day at work would be considered of taking report, making rounds, prioritizing, passing meds, doing treatment orders, answering phones, making phone calls, taking orders, supervising aides.  I learned all my nursing skills at that facility as I stayed with them for 5 years.  Management was good, but also needed improvement in building relationships with staff. Co-workers for the most part were team players.  The hardest part of the day was when it would get so busy that I wouldn't have a break.  The most enjoyable part of the job was to watch my patients heal or put interventions in place that kept the patient safe.

Norwood crossing may seem beautiful on the outside but is ugly on the inside.The managers are bullies the supervisors are bullies, the nurses are bullies too.they will pick on you and intimidate you.The pay is good but if you care about your mental health run for the hills.As a CNA they will Make you wash dishes....Yes you will be washing dishes.Watch your back most of the people are fake,YOU DON’T GET BREAKS and they will watch you drown in your work.My advice for anyone who wants to work here stay to yourself!! Be low-key don’t talk or befriend anyone there.get your money and go home. Don’t help anyone with their residents because they won’t help you with yours.


My day would start with getting report and then making rounds. After that, I would start out with my morning insulin shots and morning med pass. Right after that, I start the wound care for my patients. After I'm finished with that, I sit down and take care of all the things that are supposed be done from the report and new tasks. At 11am, it is time for bgm. The patients who need sliding scale insulin will get it. Then I start with my 12pm med pass. After that, I go to lunch. After lunch I do my 1-2pm med pass and then I finish all the tasks and documentation that needs to be done.

Used to be 5 cnas per floor, two nurses, by the time I left a year later we were so understaffed that we were lucky if we had more than one CNA on the floor. Management doesn’t realize if they offered shift incentives, and better pay across the board WITH BENEFITS FOR ALL they would not be hemorrhaging staff. Nurses and CNAs are quitting in droves. This used to be a place to be proud to work for. Now it’s just like every other nursing home. Understaffed, underpaid. They have no problem calling you at 10pm begging you to work an 11pm shift. Or texting you from three different numbers when you’re on vacation. Or asking you to skip school to work. Run.

Didn’t learn anything new. Typical day. Working on skilled unit, no time to have a break. Night shift having to also pass medications to AL residents maybe 3-4. Management was mainly the charge nurse, supportive. The work place culture is one way. Diversity is low. Didn’t feel I belonged. Hardest part working there was working the skilled unit, having to do wound care for many patients and possibly an admission and having to also pass medications. Nurse patient ratio 1:17/21 Enjoyable part of job, talking and providing care for some of the patients. and getting off at end of shift. 

Working here is immensely frustrating. Constantly short staffed so you cant provide the care your residents really need because you’re rushed and over worked. People burn out quickly and quit within months. Huge superiority complex among management and staff. Drama between the cnas on the units. You get antagonized by other cnas for doing too much for the residents and antagonized by the nurses for every little mistake. Working here makes you feel guilty because the staff only puts forward real effort when residents’ family are around. It’s a good place to get your start as a cna or nurse but don’t plan on staying long or getting treated fairly.

The atmosphere is wonderful at Norwood Crossing, it's a very family oriented culture. Everyone knows your name and always makes an effort to say hello to you. You will even see administration walking around saying hello to all the employees and residents. When working here you need to be a little more flexible with hours your able to work. We are a 24 hour facility and require staff here at all times to ensure the residents get the best care. If you like a small, tight knit community and friendly atmosphere this could be a good fit for you. It was for me!
