My typical day at work is very busy with different assignments to follow and keep updated, multitask is crucial for my job. I’m usually the first one in the office, once I get there I have to make sure our waiting area is clean and have all supplies for our office and our patients. I start all the equipment and updated the EKG machine. The next is start working on charts for the next week. Making sure all the appropriate documentation is completed, the phone never  stop, I  answer within the third ring, and patients without appointments always are flowing into our office. I have to make sure to keep privacy and update their information. I work real close with all the nurses, making sure they have all the tools they need, I do all the EKG’s and orient patients to other departments once they are done with us. Is busy, but my days are fun, I love to multitask and make sure all my patients expectations are fulfill. I’m the emergency backup for Patient Access Department; I’m cross trained in all their areas, patient registration outpatient and ER, admissions and birthing center. As for my part time job I’m a safety sitter, I usually work Friday and Saturdays overnight, this position a few years ago gave the interest of becoming a nurse, it did clarified my goals. In Orlando I want to work in my field and to complete my dream of becoming a Nurse. I’m an excellent worker and I encourage all recruiters to check my references.
What I’ve learned since I work in the medical field, is you  can make a difference in this world, helping others when they are sick, be their friend and understand what they are going trough. A smile can heal, a good gesture can heal, and a good laugh can heal. Be there, listen to them, and make their day, I can change somebody’s life just doing what I love my job.
I being bless, I have the best management team, in all the departments I work. They are always there for me and everybody else. Is wonderful to feel my questions are  answered, all these years they work hard to make sure patients are safe, employees are trained, is a never ending story what my management do, going above a beyond their duties. I do love all my management and is going to be hard to let them go, but life is giving my family the opportunity to move and is not easy to let go of my hospital family, it is my second house and I know everybody around the hospital, this is a big transition for me.
My co-workers, what can I say about them, they are my family, we have had so many great times and hard time. We had grown older together like a marriage, my friends have kids now, but we always work together as a team, we back each other and we are a strong team. M y closest co-worker is very talented, she smiles and giggles all the time, she knows when I need her and I know when I have to jump to finish our work.  My department know that this year is the moving, and they are not too happy about it, they are happy for me, but they say I’m leaving a hole that they can’t fill, and that just shrink my heart, because when I started working there I thought it was for the rest of my life, but life changed our destiny, I will miss my co-workers, my friends for life.
The hardest part of my job is always when I don’t see a happy ending. As a medical professional I will never get use to the idea of losing a patient or giving the news to a family member. It is my duty to maintain posture and be strong for the people that need my shoulder.
Everything about my job is enjoyable, be in contact with people make me feel alive and fortunate to be there for them.  Sharing my compassion for others, talking to my friends, sharing good energy around the hospital and be nice to each other. I love the fact that I work in different departments for both of our locations. I get to experience different areas and needs that teach me to be a better medical professional.  I’m in the category of essential personnel, and make me feel proud of what I’ve become in my hospital.

I started here as an intern and then came on board as a full time employee shortly there after.  The more that Novant Health has integrated into New Hanover the more it's started to feel like a business instead of a hospital. It's somewhat frustrating because healthcare just can't be run that way. 
The pros is that the management in my department genuinely care and there does seem to be an organization wide commitment to transparency with I appreciate. The employees are very kind and the hospital it's self is very innovative and provides great care to patients, which I love being a part of. 
The cons is that pay seemingly across the board is very low and that's lead to issues with employee retention and recruitment. Pretty much every area of the hospital is understaffed and overworked. We're repeatedly told they're working to adjust salaries, but also frequently told that the organization is facing financial challenges that limit their ability to "expand and innovate." I've repeatedly requested for my salary to be adjusted by providing accurate comps and job postings that include salary ranges to show that I'm being paid roughly $10-15k less than other professionals in my field. They have repeatedly told me that they acknowledge that my salary is not on par with my education, experience, or the rest of my field but done nothing to actually correct the problem. 
I am also asked to do way too much work for one therapist. I cover roughly 15 medical units (physician referrals) and on top of that I'm being asked to help manage and coordinate program development at other facilities. I have also had some problems with coworkers and even after intervention and mediation between myself, the coworker, and our manager, things continue to be a problem, but I do believe that is just this specific coworkers personality more than anything. 
A current issue facing this facility is nursing shortage and an overabundance of travel nurses. They are of course great nurses, but there is definitely challenges that come with having such a huge portion of your nursing staff being made up of travel nurses like lack of familiarity with certain policies and procedures as well as programs and resources available to help support patients and families.
The people who are responsible for making policy decisions are a mix of business and clinical minded individuals and they are generally good at soliciting and incorporating input from people who are providing direct patient care when implementing policies that affect those people. 
Overall, this is a fairly good place to work. The feeling I get is that they genuinely want to improve across the board but are limited by finances and staffing shortages. Not necessarily the best excuse but I do understand it.

Working at Novant was one of the things I wanted to accomplish in my life. I was thrilled to get the job, very easy interview, perfect fit for my career path. Boss was, per HR, very family friendly. Either HR was fooled or had their head in the sand. In retrospect, I believe it was the latter. That, or they chose to ignore the obviously reported issues. As work life started, it was good for a while, but was very political and full of backbiting angry people who intentionally sabotaged your training so you fail at your job.

Novant is a very intense and high paced workplace. I like to work and stay busy, but Novant takes this to a new level. I was trusted with integral parts of the business, yet I had to punch in and out, not allowed to work one minute over or under time, but was considered "mission critical". This was nothing more than chains and locks, with no thanks or regard for your work. Assumed guilty, never allowed to state your case and punish everyone instead of fix the problem. Horrible people management. Do not join this company.

Interview turned out to be easy because turnover is very high due to boss that had serious issues with nepotism. If you love constant changes in the workplace, in bad ways; always trying to figure out where you stand; and mocked up accusations against those that speak up for positive change, then apply away.

Otherwise, do not waste your time or talent. Senior leadership is in the dark and has no plans to save anything but money. They preach and spend millions on their mission: Remarkable People, Remarkable Medicine. The only thing remarkable is that they still exist in the competitive healthcare marketplace.

I gave up after a few years...they managed to almost break my spirit, lose faith in human kindness and thoroughly destroyed the hope for change and positive reinforcement of your contributions to the team. I just wish I had stayed long enough to help that certain boss pack up her things and help her to the elevator, like she did me. She got sacked after giving her life to Novant. I doubt it's any better with her gone, but I sure would liked to have been there to see her take her own poison...the same poison she forced on all around her.

I do not miss the strife, sleepless nights and feeling of complete unworthiness.

Working at Novant used to feel like being part of a supportive and patient-centered organization, but over time the culture has noticeably shifted—and not for the better. There’s a growing sense that employee well-being is no longer a priority, and that change is being felt across multiple levels.

Work-life balance is one of the biggest challenges. Expectations have increased while flexibility and understanding for life outside of work have decreased. It often feels like personal circumstances are overlooked, making it difficult to maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal responsibilities.

Support for emotional well-being is also lacking. Healthcare is already a high-stress field, especially in acute care rehab, yet there are minimal resources or meaningful efforts to help staff manage burnout or stress. This creates an environment where employees feel undervalued and unsupported.

Opportunities for upward growth are limited, particularly for those outside of nursing roles. Career advancement pathways are unclear or nonexistent, which can be discouraging for employees looking to grow within the organization.

Management in acute care rehab is another area of concern. Leadership often feels disconnected from the realities staff face on a daily basis, and communication is inconsistent. This contributes to low morale and a lack of trust between staff and management.

Compensation is also not competitive with other healthcare organizations in the Charlotte area. When combined with increasing workloads and declining benefits, it makes it difficult to feel adequately rewarded for the work being done.

There are also concerns about cost-cutting measures impacting both staff and patient care. The newer health insurance options are not as strong as previous plans, and even basic supplies—such as gloves—have raised safety concerns, which is alarming in a healthcare setting.

Overall, the environment feels increasingly focused on efficiency and cost reduction at the expense of employee support and patient care quality. Without meaningful changes, it’s hard to see long-term satisfaction or sustainability for staff in this organization.

The hardest part of the job was not letting death. of patients from cancer, people discussing thoughts and desires of ending there. lives and injured children in Dept. of Social Services investigations who are recovering, affect you mentally.

You work 12.5 hour shifts and are required to work a certain amount of Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in a 6 week period. 12.5 hours are the only shifts you can take unless you are wanting to pick up an extra shift on top of your normal 12.5 hours. Then the rules change to 4, 8 or 12 hours for a pick up shift only. If not compliant then you are fired.

During your 12.5 hour shift you rarely get a lunch break and you can forget the two 15 minute breaks they tell you, you will get claimed in the interview. Many of us had to wait to urinate many of days for over 2 hours until a nurse had the availability to help relieve us. I received 3 bladder infections during my 2 years there due to the long wait time to relieve myself. Many of the others suffered infections as well from this issue and when the manager was made aware of this several times nothing was ever done to fix the problem of long wait times to urinate. 

The best part of the job is the satisfaction in knowing you get to provide protection for injured babies against there parents while the department of social services investigates the parents for abuse and neglect. Knowing the children are safe under your watch as they heal in the hospital makes you feel like you are accomplishing something. 

What I have learned from this job is my health is more important than a job that pays well ($11 an hour). I will not allow my mental or physical health to be taken advantage of again. I hope people see this and prevent a headache for themselves as well. Money isn't worth everything, nor your life.

Every day at work for me is different, and I enjoy the variety of my role. I may be in clinics meeting the clinic administrators, providers, or the team members discussing practice operations or a new initiative or challenges that the clinic is facing. Or, I may be in operational meetings or sub-committee meetings or construction meetings for new practices or service line update meetings. 

I have learned that in leadership roles, when team members respect and trust their leaders, the team members are more engaged and feel as if they are a part of the "bigger picture" and take ownership of the success of the company. Trust and respect are earned and not given freely, so a leader must work to gain this from providers, peers, and team members through transparency, effective communication, and servant leadership. All team member must feel a sense of "ownership" in their roles. This will create a workplace culture of a teamwork and commitment to always keep the patient at the center in every aspect of the patient's experience. 

The most difficult part of my role is managing multiple, changing priorities when information is not shared timely. However, given that I enjoy a challenge and working in a fast-paced environment, and that I work well under stress. I am able to effectively manage and lead through this type of difficult situation. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is when I have the opportunity to speak quality time with my clinic administrators, team members, and providers to identify opportunities for success and create a plan to reach the goal or, most importantly, to celebrate successes--both great and small--with them! I feel at my best when I support my clinic administrators with day-to-day operational questions and needs. I feel that my time is well spent if I am able to help them by bearing a little bit of their load and decrease their frustration points when things may be stressful for them.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I am a new hire with Novant in Salisbury. I was extremely happy to get the job but, they treat new hires horribly and now I understand why they can't keep staff. The management in the laboratory is poor. They allow Shady co-workers to run the laboratory. The job is full of bullies and favoritism is prevalent.  If the bullies do not like you and they feel like you don't fit in or follow along with whatever they are doing no matter how wrong they are you're an outsider. The bullies will lie to management and blackball you to make you lose your job. Management listens to the bullies because those bullies are their favorites. Training is poor. You are required to know the job within a day, you basically have to teach yourself. A new hire is bounced around from Department to Department expecting to know how to work each department quickly. Before you can get a good handle on the job that you were hired for you are taken to another department to learn it immediately. It's unrealistic to have a person bounce around to different departments. It's better to have the person that you hired work that one area and perfect that one area to be good at their job. I am now putting in applications to find another job because I can see that the gossipers and Liars run the show in the laboratory. SAD!

Management is poor. Management relies on the opinions of the gossipers and the liars. Shady co-workers run the laboratory.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Because I'm new I am still learning my work area but I am continuously taking away from my work area to learn another work area that causes me to forget the things that I've learned from previous training for my area. Being bounced around is not fun. And because I work with gossipers and Liars they tell management that I don't know what I'm doing.

When I came to this job I had no idea what I was going to be doing. But whatever it was it was light load off the company. Everyone was thrilled to have me until it became easy. They found out what my position was and realize I didn’t deserve the position. I don’t know if it’s because of who I am or what I am only God knows that. Something’s you can’t say out loud because you have to learn to be professional. I’m glad God has placed me here temporarily. It proves one of my former colleagues were right about this place. I can’t go into full detail but the way they treat you is not professional. If you trying to help they don’t want your help. If you don’t try to help then you’re being lazy. Then expect you to talk to you any kind of how. I learn something not just from this place but the people all around. You can become great at what you do but because of who you are and what you became people feel you don’t deserve to be in that profession. Or maybe they don’t want you to succeed. Let me would have been the type to collect unemployment and didn’t work hard for my profession then I would have been called lazy. In this world or better yet this country will never see us fit to be anything unless it’s what they want us to be. They will start with you to get you to react and then go crying wolf like they didn’t do a thing. Somebody has to stand up and say it. I can still say thanks for the opportunity to work here. But I’m not surprise because I had a gut feeling things were going to turn around. Just know you going to forever remember my name. Because of the lies someone told made up a reason to do what they did. You place me to be someone greater. You were a coward and sneaky to get your goal accomplished.  Once you look in the mirror you will realize what you done. You tried to destroy a person who may have a family to take care of. Your ways lies or whatever will catch up. When it do, you will reap no benefits but you will lose. 

I thoroughly enjoyed working for this company but had to resign due to the hours. I worked on a step-down unit and my management team was hands down the best I have ever experienced. They consistently had an open door policy and were willing to jump in and help out with what ever was needed (even med pass and patient care). The staff was friendly and helpful. They were always there to support each other and help without question. I have made many great friends through my time at Novant. I was a new grad and was taught everything I needed to know to be successful in this setting. 

The patients were the hardest to deal with due to the fact that they would use profanity, be physically violent and overly demanding. This company strives to provide excellent customer service, but often times this is not appreciated. Due to reimbursement rates being issues by patient satisfaction, the system (and many systems) have to cater to patient's impractical requests. Many drug addicts reside here and even when d/c'd come right back through the ED. 

There are, as always, many kind patients as well who appreciate the hard work you put in. These are the patients that make it a great place to work. It's a mixed barrel so they say. 

The pay is more than other area hospitals offer and there is always opportunity for OT. PTO is good and as long as you put in your request in a timely fashion, it is often granted. The benefits are much better than what similar organizations offer and easy to sign up for. 

The orientation is 6-12 weeks long depending on your unit and understanding level. They work with you to make sure you are competent and ready before putting you on the floor. If you need more than 12 weeks they will often give you more time till you are confident. 

I would recommend Novant Health to any RN in the Charlotte area
