Overall OSF is a good place to work. 

Like most jobs, there are pros and cons, but in the end it comes down to the people you are working with. My team is fantastic and very supportive of each other, but that is not necessarily the case with all teams. Also, it does seem like the Ministry forgets that they have employees that are non-patient facing and they take them for granted. 

Depending on your role, there is now a lot of job flexibility. Due to the pandemic, we were forced in a way to figure out how to allow mission partners to work remotely. OSF did react quickly to make system upgrades so this could be possible.

Merit increases are the same for everyone as long as you meet a minimum rating which doesn't seem too hard to do. There is no financial benefit for getting a great rating though so there is no real incentive to push for it. There is also a lack of consistency in pay for people in the same job code which can lead to animosity when this is discovered. Unless you are a provider, the only way to really increase your pay is to job hop which doesn't seem too beneficial overall.

The time off benefits are very poor. You earn PTO and Sick Time throughout the year and the amount you can carry over is generous, but you'll never use your sick time unless you have to have surgery or something serious. They require you take 2 days of unscheduled PTO before you can use any sick time so sick time rarely gets used. For holidays, you get 6 of them depending on the role you are in, but those days are deducted from your PTO bank as well.  Hard to feel great their time off policy when it feels like it encourages people to work when they are sick so they don't have to waste PTO days. There was also no paternity leave so you have to plan ahead and make sure you have days off.

401(k) matching is fair and similar to what I've seen at other companies. Our health insurance is more expensive than other companies I've worked for in the area though. Even the plan that gives extra discounts for using our providers is more expensive than the plans offered by the other large employer in our area. Other benefits are similar to what I've seen recently at other companies which seems fine.

The team award is lacking if you are not a provider. Providers get a percentage of their salary while everyone else seems to get a flat $750 adjusted for however many targets we hit then minus taxes as well. While it is still something (which is more than I've gotten at some companies), it is not enough to really get you motivated. One of the targets is a mission partner opinion survey score which puts the mission partners in the awkward position of scoring things low and telling how they really feel versus scoring things high just so they don't bring down the average and cost others a little bit of the team award dollars. A better metric is probably response rate so people can be honest.

OSF overall is a good place to work. There are a lot of really great people who really care about patient care, but there is a lot of things that could and should change to be better.

When I first started working for OSF, I was very impressed by their culture and values. I worked for a specialty office in the Eastern Region. Over the years, OSF has become more an more focused on the money, instead of the patient. They claim to “serve patients with the greatest care and love”, but management is more concerned with how many patients a provider can see in a day. They expect providers to see patients in the least amount of time possible. As an organization they do not care about or value their employees and do not really care whether they stay or go. The majority of our team feels this way and some of them have been with OSF for 30+ years. Providers have also voiced complaints, but they are not heard. The head of human resources is rude and condescending when he talks to you. They do not support their employees furthering their education...they do provide financial assistance for school, but will not work around a nursing school schedule. Management is horrible. My manager has received horrible reviews on the annual Mission Partner Opinion Survey for the past three years and she is still in the same position. She is clueless to what her staff actually do and always says, “Let me know if there is anything I can do for you,” but when you go to her with anything, it does not get done. OSF definitely has too many chiefs and not enough indians. They have outdated HR policies. For example, their “no fault” attendance policy. You are penalized the exact same for being 1 second late as you would be for calling in for an entire shift. They call them occurrences but basically it is just a point system and if you rack up too many points, they write you up. But they give you one “point” if you call off, if you are 1+ seconds late, if you clock back in late from lunch, etc. Those don’t all have the same weight in my opinion and I do not think it is fair to penalize someone the same for being a second late and calling off for a whole shift. Not to mention, our manager comes in late every.single.day. She always has some excuse, and it is perfectly acceptable for her but we are penalized for one. second. 


Besides all that, I loved my job and the team I worked with. I met some of the most amazing nurses and providers and learned so much during the time I worked there. Teamwork was our staffs strong point because our manage was clueless, so we had to learn to do everything on our own.

I am glad for the experience and time that I spent with OSF, and the relationships I developed, but I prefer the focus to be on patient care rather than the money, although I understand that money is a necessary part of the puzzle, it should not be the focus.

If you want people breathing hot air of their "mission" at you when you get hired and then stab you in the back slowly but surely while they twist the blade and use shady practices then go ahead and work for these people. They pay like garbage, treat employees like feeble minded children, they want top notch results, loyalty, and perfection from employees, but they won't ever stand up for you and always look for a scape goat in every situation. They manipulate truths and HR doesn't know good workers from bad workers and are pencil pushers not on the front lines, but once you have a target on your back watch out. This place is run by the typical politicians who claim they don't have money for bonuses each year or adequate pay raises, but they pump millions into projects instead of putting a few dollars into departments like food services and the cafeteria so workers can get a good meal in a 24 hour period. They complain about ridiculous things like workers parking in front lots all while the top dogs get private parking lots. I've been there for over 7 years and had so many issues and watched great workers get fired over absurd things. They want sheep, not leaders, nor people with ideas and god forbid any of those ideas conflict with theirs. Welcome to the hit list. Managers are puppets in self preservation modes to keep their jobs and there is no loyalty to employees on lower levels. If you are expendable you can kiss a career at OSF goodbye. No room for improvement or growth, typical politics, and they act like they care about people. Truly they do not care about patients or families, they hail to the mighty dollar all in the false name of God. Catholics...should be ashamed of this facility for its practices of people and HR just trying to avoid the next lawsuit with shady tactics and manipulating the truth all via gossip and rumor mills. If you are a pet, your word is gold, if you are anything less, you may as well just look for another job and pass up everything about OSF. They are all about money and schmoozing everyone into thinking they truly care. Nope! They just want to make more and more money. Load all the patients in on Monday, send them home by Thursday so no one important has to work over the weekend. Typical pattern and such a corrupt HR department always trying to clean house every couple years to wash out their targets on the hit list. Such a shame I am not even proud to work for them. Wages are the lowest in the area in healthcare. RN's learn the ropes all too soon and leave as fast as they got hired. Only the really bad workers end up staying as long as they keep flying under the radar and bah bah bah like sheep.

My impression of OSF HealthCare System as a Contract Employee is varied and is solely dependent upon the atmosphere and management of each department I have worked in.  Leadership in the first department I worked in was very clique-ish and generally more favorable towards certain specific employees, even when those particular employees were grossly obnoxious and bullied and harassed most of the rest of the staff.  Reports were made numerous times about one specific employee who went around to many other staff members telling them how she thought that other staff member was doing everything completely wrong in their job, although at times she did not even do the job that other person was doing and had expressed her complete and total dislike of ever doing that job.  Other times, she was disparaging the efforts of those in the same position as she (which was not in a leadership capacity) who were doing their very best to get the job done by telling them she wanted them to do the job her way and not according to the established departmental protocol and procedures.  As previously stated, leadership personnel was informed numerous times but only seemed interested in the numbers and not the fact that this type of behavior is extremely demoralizing to the staff members and also undermines the morale and productivity of the department as a whole, thus adding more stress and anxiety to what can at times is already be a highly anxiety-ridden situation.  That person, unfortunately, in spite of being called into the department director's office numerous times about these behaviors, is still employed in that department.

It became so stressful for me that I finally asked my contract employee supervisor to move me to another department within OSF.  I have now been there for nearly five months and am thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.  The work is still somewhat stressful and can be overwhelming at times, but the environment itself is vastly different.  With the understanding that there is no such thing as a "perfect" department or employer, I can honestly say about the second department I have not observed any of the cattiness and petty behaviors in this present department that exist and thrive in the prior situation, and for that I am truly grateful.

Manager incompetently tries to micromanage excellent veteran staff. He shows up late, defensive & angry everyday. Frequently resents his staff & has openly & blatantly practiced sexism & favoritism with the full knowledge of the administration. He promoted his completely unqualified best buddy as sleep lab manager over 2 highly qualified veteran female candidates. You had better be a conservative catholic male or you will pay a price. Zero support for continuing education in Respiratory. Care. He does not advocate for his people. If there is any conflict he is gutless with other managers and never supports his people. The department has a busy outpatient / diagnostic schedule, which he packs full, leaving no time for ER or inpatient responsibilities. As a therapist he resented patient care and used management as an escape from it. This overbooking leads to frequent periods of running for 4 to 6 hours with no breaks. Worse yet, it causes massive stress for the staff because scheduled outpatients are delayed while therapists try to meet their responsibilities to acutely ill ER & in-house patients. This leads to justifiably angry patients and nurses and most importantly, poor quality patient care. Carrying 2-3 Beepers is normal. Department is a hole, with 3 therapists in a 6 X 10 foot space. There is no break room.  Manager sits 10 feet from the tech hub. No room to vent or decompress. All conversations are monitored.  He resents all sick calls. He has gone to people's homes to make sure they were "really sick" when they called off due to illness. Your 3rd call-off due to illness in a 12 month period gets a write up for your file. Schedules don't come out until 3-4 weeks in advance. He will not confirm vacation requests in advance so airline travel is a stressful waiting game. inferior pay. None of the 15 plus year Registered Therapists  were paid above the midpoint of the pay range despite expertly performing every required procedure in the department. Again, long history of no advocacy. 

We are directed to conserve PPE masks even when we are treating patients with symptoms of the flu, giving us the impression that our health is not as valued as our patients.  These masks probably cost 2 cents each and yet, apparently, we are not worth that amount. Wow.

My supervisor has demonstrated a lack of self-awareness that results in playing favorites, overlooking simple discipline issues and engaging in power struggles.  Energy is therefore misspent and disproportionate, an unfortunately bad example of "can't see the forest for the trees".  This is an unfortunately good example of why everyone is not well-equipped to supervise.

During annual Mission Integration seminars, employees are guided to reflect on how their faith supports the values of the institution.  This is great if you are a Christian.  If you are Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, atheist or agnostic and/or utilize spiritual supports that are not explicitly Christian, you are left to wonder "Do they realize what a missed opportunity this is?" What would it look like if they asked for the Muslim understanding of "Serve first" or "Be one" -- cultural beliefs that they profess to implement universally. There is room for a more culturally humble and inclusive approach.  Good intentions toward inclusivity are not enough when you invoke human spirituality -- OSF could  leverage the many differences among the workforce to enrich the workplace. Sadly, the decision-makers are not there yet.  

As for ensuring a diverse, representative workforce that serves the population with cultural competency, OSF falls far short of what other Central IL providers provide. Again, missed opportunities but it is hard for the institution to recognize the blind spots when it employs such a homogeneous workforce.

At first I truly enjoyed working here. I loved my co-workers and the fact I was learning more than ever thought I would JUST being an x-ray tech. However, once COVID-19 hit things seemed to go downhill. Patients became increasingly more entitled and rude and management didn't seem to care that the employees were getting treated poorly. They expected us to work short-staffed pretty much every shift, while management came and went as they pleased and didn't help out. We were constantly working 12+ hours a day without a lunch or break, but were expected to treat the patients with care. How are you supposed to do that when you're not allowed to take a break to refuel?

Upper management constantly asks for feedback and when it was given, true feedback on things we have concerns about and ways we could improve work environment, it was pretty much ignored and just went by the way-side. Pretty much made me stop giving feedback because I knew they didn't really care or even listen. I truly feel they only care about the all-mighty dollar and have gotten away from the true mission of OSF. I also can talk about the poor pay! I worked there for 5 years and didn't come close to making even mid-point pay. I would take on additional responsibilities and they didn't even pay more for that, even though management wanted me to take on those things. Looking at the starting pay now, a new employee can come in straight out of school and make almost what I was making 5 years in. Don't waste your time here if you want to make decent pay.

 I am forever thankful for my experience while working at OSF, but, I will never work for them again. 

As any call center is there's a high turnover rate and that's exactly how they treat you at OSF on call that you can be replaced immediately they have no empathy for their employees they are not willing to work with you if a schedule does not work for you if you come to them with any personal issues outside of the workplace they will blatantly inform you that that has nothing to do with the company. When I first started there I thought I had found a place that I would have job security that I would have flexibility as a single parent and there was none you are hired in at whatever schedule they choose to hire you in it and if you are a number to the successfully take that position are those hours you will have to make a choice the job or your life. I have been completely dissatisfied with the company as a whole when I was made to make a choice my grandchildren who I am raising or my job they were not flexible they would not even consider helping me through the tough time but they were adamant to let me know that because of mandatory policies there was no flexibility. The supervisors are not very forthcoming they do not train you very well many people that left only because they had no training you watch videos you take tests you read everything and then you sit with someone and then you bounce around from person to person until one person finally says that you're ready to be on the phone. I personally would not recommend this job for anybody that is a single parent is a single grandmother has foster children has a life outside of work. If you are single you don't have family you don't have a life this is a great fit for you.

Good working conditions as long as you show up to work on time, do your job, & do not take excessive breaks.  Basically it’s all about job  Consistency .

The  people who complain about the job are usually people that show up late, don’t ask questions when they don’t understand a task or work order, or are ones who are never at their cubicle and constantly talking to other people about non-work related topics. 

The Insurance benefits are really good and the pay is Ok for the most part.  Honestly the pay could be better in order to keep talented individuals or attract talented workers into coming and staying at OSF, since it can be a stressful job dealing with out of network providers and patients. It’s too bad OSF healthcare does not provide work from home like other hospitals do in the industry.  The other nice part of this job is more money your department brings in each year, the better your bonuses are at the end of the year.  I was also allowed to work overtime which helped my paychecks.  Pay his biweekly, unfortunately. 

Most everybody there is friendly and there’s lots of fun social activities that the department puts on for special occasions,  retirements, birthdays as well as mile marker achievements (individual/department/organization). 

 The most stress from this job, is dealing with third-party providers such as other insurance companies, doctors & Medicare. Other than that,  I’ve had a very good experience at this organization and within the department. Many of my coworkers are wonderful.

Depending on what department you are in this job can either be fantastic or absolutely miserable. The only thing that is consistently awful about all OSF departments is their attendance policy. You are only allowed 5 call offs a year (yes a year) before you get the first level of discipline. They do offer something called FMLA, if you have medical conditions or other things that excuse you a few more days a year, but you can only get it AFTER being with OSF for a year. If you have a pre diagnosed medical condition that could cause you to miss more than 5 days in a year for your first year, then you can’t work here. The place also doesn’t have the best precautions to keep employees from getting sick, but fear of discipline is used for attendance and a lot of times your caregivers may not be able to be 100% bc they are sick and can’t do anything about it, but work through it and possibly make others sick or get worse.  I’ve worked in a couple different departments and while I don’t have many problems with my current department, my past ones tended to be miserable. Terrible management, no care for patients or employees. Be sure before you apply anywhere there that you try and find someone already in whatever department you are applying for that will tell you how the job and the management and everything else actually is. As for medical insurance, they offer insurance  for good prices and you get lots of other small discounts in different places around the area. The pay and treatment of employees could use a lot of improvement.
