I had a great time at OSUMC working as a public safety dispatcher for security. My direct team (co-workers) were fantastic, I always knew they were there to back me up and we always supported each other. Interoffice environment was easy going and stress free. My managers were always on top of their game and were eager to help when we needed it (and not bother us, also). 

Some of the positives were: benefits were good but not great healthcare, big discount on OSUMC services, discounted lunches, security can provide rides to and from your vehicle, safe environment. 

Some of the negatives were: PTO was fast and easy to earn but hard actually use as you would have to find someone to cover to use it. You could sell your PTO for 80 cents on the dollar but kind of defeats the purpose of PTO. I  thought for a hospital, our health care should of been cheaper and/or better benefits. Mandatory yearly training that the hospital provided was very clinical heavy and did not help us learn more as we never used that side so it was very confusing. Some people will be against mandatory vaccines and flu shots. 

Overall, a solid place to work with a few annoying policies and requirements. I can't speak for the clinical side but I can say for security, was an awesome time. I really was disappointed I had to voluntarily leave. 

A typical day usually was spent working on various .NET projects while performing some SharePoint administration duties.

I continued to develop my soft skills while working with heads of the various departments. I also became extremely proficient with SharePoint Designer, CSS, Visual Sutios 2010, C# and other .NET languages.

My co-workers were fantastic and always helpful. We enjoyed helping one another as well as developing team continuity and morale. Managers were tough but very fair and demanded high quality work.

The hardest part of the job was developing my communication skills with non-technical people. At first I would often explain things in a technical manner that did not need to be discussed as it was unimportant to the task at hand. I learned through trial and error about how to discuss their needs, and what questions needed to be asked to fully understand the business processes necessary to create a viable solution.

The most enjoyable part of the job was delivering solutions to the user that made their job and life easier. The smile on their face when I was finished was the fuel that kept me going.

As a charge nurse I was expected to be in charge, assign new patients, take a full team AND leave at 0700, charting and reports done.  This is an IMPOSSIBLE task!  Some nights I wouldn't be able to see my first patient since bedside report until 2100 or later due to all the admissions having to be assigned beds.  Then the medications would be late and the charting would be even later, never to be able to catch up until morning.  If the day charge nurse was late then it was up to me to also make patient assignments for the day shift, putting me further behind. But I was still expected to leave on time!  I was written up for my poor time management (I asked my manager to shadow me one night shift to be able to give me constructive advice on what I could do differently, but she declined).  Management states they are there for you, but they continued to set me up to fail.

My coworkers were awesome!  If you don't have to be in a leadership role, a great place to work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Intermediate management and upper management have no accountability at all. They work you hour after hour and then complain. Most coworkers in the facility side which was eight people 50% didn’t do anything except complain, pathetic place to work because of intermediate management and upper management. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Every time there’s a problem, management brushes it under the rug, and then it becomes a bigger problem that people in facilities are supposed to fix and take care of. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture is one of do as I say, not as I do, and nobody gives a care about employee concerns. Not having the tools to do the job, not having the parts to do the job. Upper management sits on bids for over two years and every summer your faith heat and humidity in ORs because of their inability to do their job.

Overworked with no help from intermediate or upper management

It’s been a dream to work at OSUMC for a while now because of its reputation, but getting an offer was just the beginning of a frustrating process. They currently have a brand new building that is opening up so I applied for a position since I have 8 years experience in multiple Level 1 trauma center hospitals. Since it’s a senior role I assumed I would get a higher salary than what I was offered. For a new hospital compensation offered to me was unbelievable. It’s like they don’t want people with experience to get the pay they deserve. Columbus is not a cheap city and they need to give their employees a livable wage, but there HR policy on pay is something I can’t wrap my head around. They would pay 2 people the same salary who did or didn’t have any experience. Had to turn down the offer because they wouldn’t meet my salary expectations and it’s just no flexibility. I must say turning down the offer saved me a lot of money and time since I would be relocating from Cleveland to Columbus for a job offer that wasn’t worth it. 

Started at OSUMC as an agency RN.  After several months I became a full time employee.  Pay wasn't great; was at the lower end of the surrounding hospitals.  They had some really great staff and of course some that I wouldn't let walk my dog.  But there was a feeling of family, I stayed 10 years.  Most of the Department heads/Managers were excellent.  I felt like they really cared about Patient Safety even though staffing didn't always reflect that.  I loved having the Residents there.  Overall management of the hospital changed hands multiple times which was unnerving, thankfully I always survived the layoffs.  HR was very catty for lack of a better word.  Hopefully that has changed with the newest Director.  I never had any issues with requested time off and as usual, overtime was almost always available.  Education department was pretty awesome.  They offered a lot of classes I took advantage of to increase my knowledge.  Overall, I would recommend OSUMC.

OSU Medical center used to be a fantastic place to work.  It has declined so dramatically in the last year that it is too stressful and no longer an enjoyable place to be.  There is a lot of favoritism played amongst long standing employees versus new comers within a lot of the upper management systems.  There has been an increase in turnover lately in all departments due to the amount of work people are expected to do.  They are supposed to be "no lift" but when you are short staffed, as all departments are, you are always lifting. Techs and Nurses are all being assigned more patients than they can comfortably and even safely handle. The morale is down dramatically due to the mistreatment of staff, misuse of departments, and short staffing.  Overall... I would not recommend it as a place to work unless you want to be over worked and under appreciated.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The histology lab has now been updated as of 2021 and is state of the art now. I was part of the move there. However, management has been through changes and the personnel there needs a strong-positive leader. Once you have left there bc of $ and you want to go back to help as a contingent- they basically don’t care. It’s like they want to punish you for leaving.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The coworkers- there’s no cohesiveness amongst supposedly highly trained techs- leadership is lacking

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Workload is very high- if you like being busy- it’s that. But if you’re looking for a variety of skills to be utilized, kind of hard bc only certain people are deemed for those jobs in the dept 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It was busy. And as a lead, I liked being busy and keeping things going

They would rather pay for new employees with sign on bonuses than to pay to keep the employees that have been working there for a long time. I have seen so many prople work here and that were loyal that have left, including many doctors, front staff at clinics and nurses. When they left the company did the same for thing for those people, basically could care less and acted like "ok theres the door" after a decade or so of their time. i did enjoy the person I interviewed with and that was a pleasant experience,  but that person is long gone of course. They got a new administrator and then cleaned house by firing or forcing people to quit including doctors and surgeons. Would not recommend unless you like drama and never being appreciated or heard


A typical workday for me starts early morning with daily work lists and claims reports, correspondence, and claims denied reports.
this is the expected daily work as well as the daily emails that come from the management team. Prioritizing is usually a big part of my productive day. 
The management team communicates regularly with team to insure daily needs and goals are met. The environment is cozy with peers working well together with a common goal. The hardest part of the job is completing all work daily that is leaving with zero unfinished daily. The most enjoyable part is the way everyone works well together and converse well with each other on a daily basis.
