OnPoint Community Credit Union

OnPoint does an excellent job of creating a welcoming and friendly envoirnment to be in 5 days a week. The morale is usually good company wide and there is a lot of room for job growth and career advancement within the company, and it is one of the few employers who actually practices what it preaches when it comes to promoting from within. On the other hand, the staff is vastly underpaid in each position compared to the same positions at other financial institutions in the area ( salary differences by 10 - 20K for the same positions being offered ). Yearly wage increases are kept standard around 3% which is actually a demontion in pay when you take into account the fact that inflation is aroun 6% a year? ( I have brought this up during a raise / yearly review and the only response I recieved was that this was common practice for OnPoint and that I should be greatful. I had surpassed all quotas and expectations for that year ). Employees working in the same positions can make vastly different salaries regardless of senority or tenure and it is discouraged to talk about salary in the workplace. The benefits package is excellent with a 5% 401k match and 100% healthcare coverage, but most financial institutions in the area offer these same benfits with higher pay. OnPoint constantly advertises that it invests back into the community by dontaing millions of dollars a year to charities, yet continues to give employees raises of less than 50% of inflation each year. Morale has been low lately across all departments as everyone is running a skeleton crew + work volume is higher than ever so this makes for an exhausted work force that is slowly leaving the credit union as the low pay is not worth the stress. Each position is expected to go well above and beyond their regular duties and management is frequently not on site for up to a week in a row leaving staff to deal with management issues, go without the capacity to obtain timely approvals or support, and to deal with upset customers. Incentive plans are a moving target and the bar to hit them gets raised higher every year, do not plan on hitting goals as part of your income package if hired as it is near impossible due to cherry picking from senior staff ( who cant really be blamed for it ) and the complex tier structure with 5 different, constantly changing, check boxes you have to hit just to make payout of a couple extra hundred dollars. Unneeded and unnecessary stress added on to an already stressful job. ( On a side note, if these incentive plans were made easier to follow and realistic to consistantly obtaion your employess would guaranteed actually try to be hitting them vs just throwing what they can at the wall and seeing what sticks ) 

At the end of the day onpoint does an excellent job in the benefits area and overall culture ( everyone who works there company wide is a good and genuine person ). My advice to them would be to reconsider their view on yearly wage % increases and payoverall or they will begin to loose their tenured staff to other financial institutions who are doing so. You cannot pay your mortgage or rent anymore on a $1200 paycheck, and being mentally exhausted when coming home from a 10 hour day due to doing the job of 3 people will make people want to leave. This is already prevelant with the number of open positions each week growing in the weekly email we get encouraging us to refer our friends and family. 

Take care of your employees ( not just the new ones you higher by brining them on at a higher wage than their peers who have been in the same position for years ) , and your employees will continue to take care of your membership as it has done so for years. There is no point in sending out survey monkey requests regarding your staffs view of the worplace if it falls on deaf ears and is just to keep up appearances. 

Your experience at OnPoint for retail banking depends solely on the branch you end up at. There are good branches with great managers, but it seems those are far and few between. If you told me a year ago i’d be writing a negative review about working at OnPoint I would not have believed you. my first 1.5 years there i felt extremely supported and believed in, i could rely on my managers and never felt judged or discriminated against until i got to my most recent branch. Management felt extremely unqualified and there was so much blatant favoritism that it felt uncanny that higher management didn’t notice. I was able to advance pretty quickly until i got to that branch. There was no real hands on training or guidance provided outside of the training classes i drove to portland for. i learned everything on my own in a field i had never been in before. if you need close guidance when stepping into a new role, don’t work for OnPoint. you’ll be thrown into the woods and be expected to know everything right off the bat. management felt unreliable, disorganized and chaotic and personal life and gossip was brought into work life constantly. i’d never experienced as much workplace drama as i did there. there is no regard for employees with children or needs outside of the workplace (unless you are the bosses favorite of course) and all good work goes unnoticed. It feels as though there were many rushed changes and the level that OP values their employees had depreciated greatly. i loved working for OnPoint until my location changed and suddenly i dreaded going to work every day. criteria for management needs to be re evaluated because it’s a mess there right now and something needs to change or be looked at more closely.

It does not matter if you express that know you will thrive in another department, you first have to meet the most unrealistic expectations before it being considered. If you do meet them, you are miserable because you are working tirelessly being in the queue. Only 2 managers I know helped get on phones with members when call volumes were high on busy days (highly respected them). Micromanaging is high levels, while having to meet a “peer average” volume of calls (60-70 calls roughly minimum daily to meet). The benefits were amazing and bonuses were appreciated, but it did not make up for the verbal abuse from members, unrealistic stat requirements and mental exhaustion that this jobs brings. You get penalized if a call makes you late to break/lunches or if you need extra time to finish a task if a member disconnects from you, which they will not adjust your stats for these issues, only if there is a “department wide issue”. You also get penalized if you need to leave early if you are sick/something comes up and if it is not approved by management or requested to use time off in advanced all while management is able to come and go as pleased. Communication was poor, and could be improved both from management and departments themselves. You should not have to be told changed of procedures from other departments/reps, making you look unknowledgeable to members and it being frustrating not knowing of the changes unless you go on a goose chase for them (no notices of a department being in meetings during certain times, changes to procedures, etc). You do get to meet some amazing colleagues that you can lean on and build relationships with them inside/outside of work. 

On any given day I’d be briefed on changes to policy, to my job description, to leadership, etc. It always felt like nothing was permanent and there was no clear idea in where our department was heading. When I left, they were in the middle of some merger with departments that made everyone on our team scratch their head. Everything seems like it’s just sprung on you and no clear plans are ever conveyed because again, they’ll most likely just change in a couple of days anyway. The culture is very “corporate” feeling so if you’re into that, cool, if not, probably not the greatest fit. Also, if you’re planning on working in the call center… best of luck. That place was a literal revolving door, I didn’t even bother learning names eventually because new faces would be gone within a month or two only to be replaced by another wave of people unknowingly walking into this place thinking it was going to be a good fit, only for them to be gone shortly after. In summary, the lack of organization, micromanagement, constant and frankly annoying changes big and small, lack of any real communication from management about things that effect you personally.. I could go on forever. I wouldn’t recommend working here to someone I care about, I’ll just put it that way. 

As a Teller/Member Service Representative I was responsible for helping the vault teller count the cash/coin balance of the vault. My duty was to balance & maintain my till. I would help members with money transaction with their accounts. I was also responsible for cross sales of products & referrals of other Credit Union services such as mortgage & IRA’s. What I enjoyed the most of my Teller position with Onpoint C.U. was my interaction with the members. The hardest part of my job was trying to consol members if they had problems with their account or personal issues. I have a big heart therefore that was the most difficult part of my job.  
 The management at Onpoint C.U., were very compassionate about their employees, company moral & most importantly their relationship with the members of the credit union. Onpoint was true to train & advance employees positions within the company. I saw Onpoint Community Credit Union as family. We were there to help each other & devoted to making sure our products & services were always up to par for the credit union members.

Your experience working at OnPoint will entirely depend on which branch or department of the company you work for. I had worked at very friendly branches with laid back and comfortable atmospheres, while others were boiler room levels of pressure with Tellers expected to do cold-calls and progress rapidly with little training and unreasonable expectations. The management could range from very reasonable and easy to work with to gossipy and manipulative, with little structure or oversite. Avoid working at any Fred Meyer branch. These branches have very poor working conditions, long hours, no windows, and more aggressive growth expectations. 

Pay is ok, comparable to most entry level call centers. The work itself isn't hard once you learn all of the programs, however the new metrics system to monitor call center employees could use some adjusting. There should be more people hired to cover the phones, there is always a ridiculous amount of calls waiting to be answered and it makes for a very stressful shift constantly answering calls of annoyed people who've been waiting on hold for 20+ minutes.  Career advancement is there, but can take a while to get into another department if you start out in the call center. Schedules are pretty rigid, even remote positions are required to adhere to scheduled breaks/lunches. Would be nice to have more flexibility of work hours, and taking time off. 

They are becoming corporate, molding employees into robots. The call center is ridiculous, holding the little employees they have to tight standards with exhaustingly high volumes of calls constantly and angry members from long hold times. Employees don't want to stay because of the high job dissatisfaction. The pay and bonuses are nice, not worth what the job is. New hires don't want to stay which leaves a lot of stress and work to the existing employees that should be paid more. Supervisors and other departments don't seem to want to help, just pass you off to someone else. Schedules are unfavorable with very little flexibility and it's hard to get the days off you want or need. They want to grow their membership base but have less and less employees to help them, more bucks for Rob's pocket! 

OnPoint got a "3" because they have great benefits and they do nice things for their employees such as gift card incentives, Christmas bonuses, and paid time off. However, they are rarely fully staffed so you feel overworked, often. And upper management will rarely be on your side in any given situation. They like to place blame when it is unnecessary which in turn creates an unpleasant working environment. The politics are unfair. They are VERY strict on their employee policies i.e. attendance, cross-selling, balancing, and customer service. If you're looking for job security, don't look here unless you are above and beyond and don't mind feeling underpaid for the amount of work and stress you have.

If you want to be underpaid in the market, and work for a pretty much lies it's great. 

I was completely shocked after I left and got another position in the exact same field and was comfortably paid more. 

I left after lack of Care, Lack of ownership of MAJOR mistakes. 
Just plain lying to employees, and members at length, and Lack of what the core values of that company once was. 

It went from working at a place that was wonderful, to a point where they could have doubled my pay and I still would have quit. 

So end rant I loved them when I started, but that company has completely destroyed what they once were.
